Default hiking trail training questions/ biweekly journal

this is a long post but i really need help
hey guys i know this is a fighting site, but one of the other things i like to do is hike/backpack.
here is some back ground on me before i ask my question.
i'm 27(in march) 5'10" 250# my body fat % is about 35%
most of my fat is on my stomach, upper legs, chest.
i'm not the normal 250# fat guy, i enjoy outdoor stuff, i've always been a little overweight, but hurt my knee a few years ago. the hurt knee along with being a manager at pizza hut (free food) i gained about 60#s
before i gained all that weigh i was kinda fat but had better cardio and endurance then my fit friends.

ok so here is some info on the hike i'm doing.
it's the Pacific Crest Trail the trail goes from campo, ca to manning park, BC canada. 2600 mile trail goes through ca, or, wa. and 9 miles into british colombia
on this trail i will be carrying everything i need on my back. usually about 15-25# including water.
i will be walking about 20 miles a day for 5-6 months.

now here i get to the question.
a few years ago i was planning this hike. my fiance and i were going to do it and we were in pretty good shape, i hurt my knee and could not do the trail.
fast forward to now.
we have gone on a few hikes over the last couple weeks and i feel like i'm gonna die. my cardio needs lots of work.
i'm not too worried about my weight, but i would like to get down to about 200 by then.

ok so i need to work on cardio, my plan is 3 hours on the treadmill on the "hill setting" every day, cept days we go on hikes.
i know that lifting weights is good to burn fat, but i don't know what i should do.
i really don't need bigger muscles, so i was thinking low weight/ high reps.
one ff member said i should do things that work out multiple muscles.
does anyone know what i should do. i'm really looking for exact directions, i'm not very creative with this kind of stuff.
i was thinking of doing the randy couture barbell workout that was posted here a few days ago.

i've changed the way i'm eating, and cut out all drinks cept water.
i used to drink a 12 pack of soda in a few days, now i only drink soda at restaurants cause i can't handle tap water.
i'm not someone that can eat veggies and fruits. there are some that i like but it's hard for me to eat them.
i've been eating rice with chicken and pasta. a friend of mine told me to get wheat pasta and rice, cause it's better for you then white rice and flour pasta.

so can anyone help me with a workout plan to burn fat and build cardio. i don't need to build muscles.
also does anyone have any food ideas for someone that is a picky eater.

i'm starting the hike on april 8, 08 so i have a little over a year, but i'd like to drop about 20-30# by july. any ideas would be appreciated

please help,
-michael

Here are two links you should check out. In general, you have to start slowly and gradually build up your cardio base. If you overdo it now, all you'll do is exhaust yourself and wreck your legs and feet.

Couch to 5K Walk/Run Program

404 Error - Page Not Found - University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences - Where Medicine Lives

Edited to add: That second link looks weird, but it still works for me.

a rude post was removed so i'm editing this post for that content. some things i'm leaving in.

also i should note that i don't eat pizza and drink beer.
i've never drank beer. and i'm a pretty healthy guy for being 250 lbs.
like i said above i'm an out doors person, not a sit on the couch and watch tv person.
i've walked 20 miles in one day, over 100 miles in a week before so i'm sure 3 hours on a treadmill won't kill me.

(a member recommend a gastric bypass surgery as the only way i could lose this weight)
also for you to recommend a gastric bypass surgery to someone that is not over 100 pounds over weight tells me you have no idea what you are talking about.
also most people that do those surgeries gain the weight back cause they still don't know how to eat.

surgery is the last option anyone should ever consider. unfortunately its being marketed heavily and is even being considered as the best bet to help overweight teens and children. we actually have a front page article in our local newspaper praising the wonders of that same surgery.

ok so here's an update for anyone that cares....
i'm really doing this thread to keep myself accountable for my eating and exercising
so i went to san diego to pick up a friend that is moving out here and visit family.
my mom feels the need to sara lee love me to death.
she made tacos, i must say my sister must have picked out the stuff cause we had very lean ground beef, wheat tortillas, fat free cheese.
so it was not as bad as i thought when i walked in and smelled tacos.

she also made some pasta and homemade sauce. way too much fat, cals, carbs and everything else i'm trying to watch.

um i couldn't workout there cause i didn't have a gym but i took a jog around the block and did some body weight squats, and other body weight stuff.
the day i left i got sick and i'm still sick. my sister had some kind of a viral infection and now i have it. i feel myself getting better so maybe tomorrow i can start my exercising again. i have still been eating healthy, cept for 2 places i had to take my friend in vegas.

i'm gonna start weighing myself tomorrow morning and then 2x a week.
i will also be taking a pic of myself every week.
to get an idea of how much i've lost.

also i just want to say my sickness is not cause of being unhealthy or not eating enough.
it's only cause my sister was sick.

i have still not had a soda at home, i still have one if we go out to dinner.
which is not very often.

my pants already feel looser, but i don't think i lost much. i'm also afraid to see how much i weigh cause it's been over a month since i've weighed myself and i know i've gained weight.
my sister is doing weight watchers and she's lost 11 lbs in the last 5 weeks, that was with no exercise cause she was having heart problems. now her dr. has cleared her for exercise.
we are kinda having a race to see who gets to goal weight first. i'm gonna win...

i really don't want to go to the DR. but if i'm not better by tomorrow i'm going. this is getting ridiculous

well i'm still sick, but getting better. i think tomorrow i will be able to workout again. i've been trying to stick to my diet, but it's hard when i'm sick.
i've lost 5lbs this week, from not eating enough. all i could keep down was chicken broth.
so i'm ahead of my weight loss for the week, but i'm thinking it's all muscle i lost.

i've also updated my sig to read my weight/bf% i'm gonna be updating it weekly.

starting stats
WEIGHT: 255
BF%: 34

throw away your scale. they are evil and don't tell the whole story if your doing any kind of weight training along with dieting. i have weighed between 190 and 195 for the last few months but i can see the real differance when i step in front of the mirror or put on a pair of jeans. keep doing those bodyweight squats. they work the big muscles in the legs/hips which will burn alot of calories. good job on not drinking soda at home but try not to drink it anywhere. when i stopped drinking coke i was cutting over 1000 calories a week of of my diet. another easy way to remove calories from your diet is portion size, simply eat less of what you have. if you go out to eat don't feel you have to clean your plate. eat what you need and either take home the rest or toss it. continue keeping track of your progress, it really makes a differance. i suggest keeping a food log when you are at home as well. record everything you eat in a day and review it, cutting out unneccesary eating. remember you have to burn or cut out 3500calories to drop a pound of fat.

well i understand that scales are evil, but i am not one that counts pounds and has to weigh a certain amount.
i don't get discouraged if the scale stays the same. also i only jump on the scale 2x a week.
before i cut out the soda i was drinking a 6pack every 1-2 days. so i cut a ton of calories with that.

i really need to find a good snack to eat cause all i'm eating now is 3 meals with maybe a snack once a day. i need to find something i like that i can snack on cause my meals are kinda spread out.

oh but i should throw out the scale cause my girl is trying to tone up and drop 5-10 pounds.
so i have her working out with me, lifting weights. so she's been the same weight for the last week. freaking out cause she's not losing weight.
so everyday i have to smack her and tell her to stay off the scale and that she is putting on some muscle which is eating fat. so she might be the same weight, but her body is getting more tone.

today i'm starting to work out again, but i'm not gonna do major cardio. if i run i start coughing, so i'm just gonna walk to warm up then do my weights, with a walk to cool down.

first day back at the gym in a week

i just had the flu a few weeks back and it was really hard coming back to the heavy weights and lactic acid producing workouts. don't rush back into it but rather take your time. i also waited a week before stepping back up to the weights but it was worth it since i did'nt get sick again. it was really hard to not workout, i felt like i was losing strength everyday. my first workout back was lousy but i kept with it and am already way ahead of where i was before i was sick. BTW, i used to weight 235 and it was'nt muscle. like you, i decided to lose weight and get my life back and within 12 months i was down to 180.

alright so i'm still sick, i got my girl sick then she got me sick again. i've been walking around. but still can't workout. i think two days from now will be my first workout.
i've got some ground to pick up but i've got along time to reach my goal. and the slower it comes off the longer it stays off.

thanks for the help and encouragement.

Vegas man I'd just like to say that I think it's great you're doing this and wish you the best of luck. I wish more people in America would take control of their lives and strive to live healthier and longer, good for you.
