Well, if you want a good MMA base, I think you should take BJJ, judo or wrestling, preferable BJJ. After that, recommend take Muay Thai or some other good striking martial art, like Tae Kwan Do or some form of Karate.

Once you have feel competant in both, I would recommend going to a dojo that cross trains. Now that is all assuming you really only want to learn one side of martial arts at a time. The best thing really to do is find a good local dojo that teaches MMA (pankration or some other cross martial art training dojo.)
