Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005
Prince George’s County Police have issued a warrant charging professional boxer William Joppy with first-degree assault in connection with a Sept. 8 incident in Seat Pleasant.
According to Prince George’s Police, Joppy, 35, approached the victim near the intersection of Ritchie Road and Walker Mill Road at about 5 p.m. on Sept. 8. After arguing with the victim, Joppy allegedly reached into the victim’s car and choked the victim, police said.
The victim drove away and Joppy followed in his vehicle, a silver Cadillac. Joppy allegedly struck the victim’s vehicle several times before driving away, police said.
Joppy is described as a black male, 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.
Joppy is a District native with a career boxing record of 35-4-1. He won his most recent fight, knocking out Rashaan Blackburn in a super middleweight bout July 29 in North Charleston, S.C.
Anyone with information on Joppy’s whereabouts is asked to call the Prince George’s Police District III Investigative Section at 301-772-4911.

William Joppy, turned himself in to police without incident at about 3 p.m. on Sept. 14 after a warrant charging him for an assault was obtained, according to police.
Police charged Joppy with first-degree assault and is being held at the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections under a no-bond status.
At about 5 p.m. on Sept. 8, police said the suspect approached the victim at Ritchie Road and Walker Mill Road in Temple Hills. The suspect and victim, who are acquaintances, began to argue, and the suspect then reached inside the victim’s vehicle and began to choke the victim.
In an attempt to stop the assault, the victim sped away, with the suspect giving chase in his vehicle and striking the victim’s vehicle several times in the rear, which caused the victim’s vehicle to spin out of control. Police said the suspect subsequently fled the scene.

well, if he only choked the victim and did'nt punch him he should be Ok and get off with a simple assault charge. had he throw punches it could have been differant. i am always amazed when pro athletes act like morons and do things like this.

I didn't know it was diff., I would have figured choking someone would be more serious than punching.... Well he is a professional boxer so that makes punching worse right?

I seriously, seriously doubt it changes the actual charge. Is what it would do, is really, realy hurt your case. A judge or jury is not going to sympathize with a trained fighter hurting ppl.
Anyways, assault charges are a joke. You spend the night in jail. Woo-hoo. Not to mention, I've seen some fairly bad beatings that only ended up as simple assault and/or battery. Our court system is a joke, he's not going to get into much trouble. Unless of course, he hit the car with his car... then that might be a little different.

punching would leave bruises as evidence a choke through a car window when he drove away probably wouldnt leave much of a mark.
