Being uninsured or underinsured basically means you are last on the list.. you could have a heart attack.. tell them your uninsured.. and out you go. No, not out to the Operating Room, but rather out to heaven/hell/reincarnation/absolutenothingness.

Good points.
I see that side.

One of the largest problem with the ER's today is the number of people going there fot completely B.S. reasons. They basicly treat it like its primary care. Just like you mentioned above, back aches and tooth aches. You live in Texas and so Im sure you are aware of this as much as I am but when I was stationed in Arizona, I got hurt and had to go to the ER at the local hospital because it was closer and I was off base. We get there and its full of people who cant even speak english and cant fill out the forms or talk to the nurses. Almost the entire room was full of them. Im not going to be stupid and say that all of them were illegal but Id bet a months salary that the vast majority of them were. This was at Sierra Vista, Az in Cochise county, one of the largest and most buys illegal crossing areas in the country.
The drain that stuff like that puts on our ER's alone, not to mention the entire system is staggering. That is just one of the things that is contributing to the high cost of health care and the long waits in the ER.

I feel that many of his films have a solid ideological basis, but he drops the ball with his own narrow and often wrong views. That point is primarily directed at F/911.
We studied F/911 in film class. I also stood out and told my instructor that Moore had lied a lot in the film. He challenged me to prove it. So, I printed out that link that I posted above and brought it in and went point for point with my teacher in a class debate. He could not refute any of the data that I brought.
I mean, the opening scene of F/911 starts off with a lie:Fahrenheit 9/11 begins on election night 2000. We are first shown Al Gore rocking on stage with famous musicians and a high-spirited crowd. The conspicuous sign on stage reads "Florida Victory." Moore creates the impression that Gore was celebrating his victory in Florida. Moore's voiceover claims, "And little Stevie Wonder, he seemed so happy, like a miracle had taken place." The verb tense of past perfect ("had taken") furthers the impression that the election has been completed.
Actually, the rally took place in the early hours of election day, before polls had even opened. Gore did campaign in Florida on election day, but went home to Tennessee to await the results. The "Florida Victory" sign reflected Gore’s hopes, not any actual election results. ("Gore Campaigns Into Election Day," Associated Press, Nov. 7, 2000.) From there it is all downhill fast.

Okay I'm one of those people who really hates to talk about his situation lest someone see it as whining but this being a US health insurance topic more or less I guess I'll talk a bit. I will try to keep this brief but it may be easier said than done. About 10 years ago I was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease, which means that my kidneys are forming cysts that eat up healthy kidney. I was diagnosed in the ER after being misdiagnosed as an STD or bladder infection by several doctors (it hurt when I pissed because I was passing several kidney stones at once) but hey I'm only 23 so it must be something to do with my sex life right? Well the doctor comes back after I've been whacked to the gills with painillers and tells me I have multiple masses in my right kidney and should see a specialist immediatly. Well long story short I didn't have insurance and ended up filing medical bankruptcy on all of the bills medicaid wouldn't retroactively cover (medicaid because I lost my job due to long hospital stay and no longer being able to perform a physically demanding job). So for thhe last 8 years or so I have had to balance whether I want to work a good job and make good money and lose my medicaid or take a good paying job and maybe have them disqualify covering my kidneys due to pre-existing condition. This is very hard on my wife, who I am almost ashamed to admit brings in most of our income. This country could benefit from some form of free healthcare that doesn't require you to be dirt poor to get it. I went to the ER twice last week passing another kidney stone and the first time they sent me home (after $2400.00 they said the stone was too small to see) eight hours later I had to go back to the ER because I was in so much pain I was crying and vomiting at the same time. So the second visit would have cost me 1800 or so along with my regular doctor visits which run about 10k a year. So my point, Michael Moore or no soomeone needs to give this a serious look. It's not like Canada and the Uk are third world countries with terrible doctors which is what the medical "professionals" here try to claim. I'm sorry this is so long guys but when it comes to this kind of stuff I tend to get a little pissy.lol

This is exactly what I am talking about. I have needed knee surgery for a torn meniscus for a while now, but put it off cause I couldn't afford the cost of the surgery even with my health insurance. I then got laid off cause my company went out of business and have gotten a job that gives me part time hours (35), just enough so I can't be full time to get benefits which I would have to wait 3 months to get anyway. Meanwhile, my knee locks up more and more frequently and I am starting to get worried about arthritis setting in, but since I can't go to the doctor or afford to get an MRI, I just have to pray. I'm glad I don't have a serious condition like you did, but it is heartbreaking how something as important as a person's health is not a priority in this country.

I had the meniscus surgury back in high school when still covered by my parent's insurance. (damn football lol) I would hat to think of having to deal with that on a daily basis again. Even when you do find a doctor sometimes they don't care either. I've been through about 6 kidney doctors due to apathy and just general di**headedness.

thats really a heart breaking story bullitt, you should take one of those boats to cuba and try your luck, or even immigrate to canada, they are on the look out for tons of labourers/tradesmen at the moment, and actually care about their citizens.

i was waiting to hear people's reactions to SICKO. i am not impressed by the people who can't see past the maker of the movie and see the real issues at hand. Health care in the USA is a joke, its goal is to make money as opposed to actually helping people. Luckily i have insurance that is very affordable since i could'nt imagine having to pay top dollar for the lackluster care i have received over the years. i am even luckier in that the ERs in my state have to admit me for care even if i did'nt have insurance. you don't have to be a fan of Micheal Moore to see that the system no longer serves the needs of the people. Moore used Cuba as an example because unlike the US, they have a very well run healthcare system. so well run in fact that the US Government has done everything it can to throw wrenches into it. How funny that an evil communist country has a superior healthcare system to the might USA. better to undermine it then to study it and try to learn from it. SICKO is a movie, not a documentary. its meant to hit an emotional nerve and maybe you'll go look into the issues yourself as opposed to just ranting that Micheal Moore is an idiot. Americans as a whole are so lazy that they can't look for answers themselves. it was one of the complaints i heard after Farenheit 911 came out, " Moore does'nt talk about how to fix it.".

But, F/911 was the point where he went really seriously wrong. That film is littered with lies and untruths and perverted truths.

I have not yet seen Sicko. It might be truthful. But, after F/911, I just do not trust Moore.

I just take anything he say as well as anyone with a grain of salt. I personally don't gather anything I "believe" from media. It always kills me to see people argue politics when really they should just argue whether ABC or NBC is better because that seems to be the "facts" they are arguing about. lol If I don't see it with my own 2 eyes, I'm not saying it isn't true but I won't really "believe".
