Default How much?

If you work out too much your muscles will shrink, too little and your selling yourself short.

If the goal is building muscles, how do you know if your doing the right amount?

If you train a lot you will know by how you smell when your burning either fat or protein, you start stinking like freaking crazy incase you didnt know lol, if you get that then yes your training way too much.

For your average joe tactics though choose different muscle groups for each days, (biceps legs abs- mon) (chest triceps back - wed) (abs legs cross training arms - fri) for example. If your working out for size, or in any best case scenario actually, only lift weights 3 times a week max and you will see the gains.

Muscle however doesnt shrink per say whilst overtraining, it just stops growing as your using more protein in your muscles than whats going in, so it will usually define up before hitting hypertrophy usually.

I have always had great success with a normal routine.

Mon Chest Tri's and delts

Tue Cardio

Wed Back bi's and rear delts

Thur cardio

Fri core/legs( its important not to work your legs, with back or chest as the largest amount of testosterone in your body is in your legs)

Putting chest tri's is good, but doing back on a chest day makes no sense.

Your chest and tri's are push muscles where your back and bi's are pull muscles, doing them at the same time is pretty pointless IMO, working two different muscles groups at the same time( chest and back), would just be pointless.

3x a week is all you need, and you should be able to get your lifting done in 1-1 1/2.

I do heavy cardio because well i enjoy it, some people even recommend two days off between lifting, but i find 1 day seperation works well for me.
