Jens Pulver vs Cub Swanson
Quote:
Up-and-coming featherweight Cub Swanson signed his contract Sunday to face former UFC Lightweight Champion Jens Pulver at Sept. 5’s World Extreme Cagefighting event at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.
Word of the bout – Pulver's first since his second-round submission loss to BJ Penn at “The Ultimate Fighter 5” Finale in June – was announced today on TAGG RADIO. The fight will also mark Pulver's debut with the WEC.
A standout on the southern California circuit, Swanson, 23, has shone through in his two appearances with the Zuffa-owned promotion, earning a decision over Micah Miller at his last outing June 3.
“I was given a choice to fight Pulver or Mark Hominick and I chose the first,” says Swanson. “If I train hard and stick to my game plan, I can win this.”
Swanson, 10-1, trains with reputed coach Eric Paulson and at the Orange County Muay Thai facility in Santa Ana. The versatile fighter will also split his camp time for two weeks in the Big Bear Mountains with “The Ultimate Fighter 2” winner Joe Stevenson in order to prepare for the world-traveled Pulver.
After eight mixed years as a lightweight and following his loss to Penn - a rematch of a 2003 UFC 35 lightweight championship bout the Miletich Elite fighter won - Pulver (21-8-1)vowed to fight at his more natural weight of 145 pounds.

I'm still a fan of Pulver's, but his last big win was when? Might be Cole Escoveda, a nice small org fighter. Before that, it may have been against BJ 5 years ago!
Jens will be the favorite here, but Cub Swanson is a VERY good up and coming fighter who is 10 years younger than Jens and sports a 11-1 with 11 straight wins. This is not an easy fight at all for Lil' Evil.
BTW, Hominick is not #2 in the WEC. Swanson or Rani Yahya have a better claim to that than Hominick following Mark's destruction by Yahya.

Gygax, do you have any more info on Cub Swanson? I am not too familiar with the American side of the < 155lb fighters.

Fight Finder - Kevin "Cub" Swanson's Mixed Martial Arts Statistics
Kevin "Cub" Swanson is 11-1 with 10 wins in a row. He seems big for a 145 pound fighter, has only gone to a decision twice in 11 fights seems fairly well rounded and has never been knocked out. Jen's is going to be in for a tough fight.

I hope Jens can loosen up and let his hands go. I want to see him really fight like he used to do. Let 'em fly and let the chips fall where the may!

Sorry Aika, didn't see your response until this morning.
Cub is a true mixed martial arts guy, training under Erik Paulson. Paulson was the first American to ever win a Japanese Shooto title. Swanson incorporates alot of Muay Thai into his striking game, but like the submissions ALOT. He hasn't used one to win a fight, but Jens will have to be very careful if it goes to the ground with Swanson's leglocks and triangles. One of Paulson's specialties is leglocks and Swanson is very flexible, meaning setting up triangles is very easy. Two of Jens' losses in the past came from leg submissions.
Its far from an easy fight for Jens. Sometimes I just get this sneaky suspicion that MMA has passed Jens by a bit in the last 5 years. He's still a pure striker to be feared, but he's never shown enough on the ground and still has yet to develop that area thoroughly, despite training at MFS.

Jens loses to Mach Sakurai and Gomi were both very very impressive. he put Mach on his ass twice and was taking the lead in striking with Gomi when he started to open up and got himself dropped. Not arguing what you are saying but Jens is still very tough and can throw a one punch KO at any point in a fight. I am very much so looking forward to this fight!
