Josh Koscheck Explains Racist Matt Hughes Comments

In a recent interview, top UFC Welterweight Josh Koscheck made some controversial comments about fellow 170 pounder Matt Hughes. The quote is from an interview over at FistFirstFighting.com where he says "[Matt Hughes] has no speed or athletic ability because he's white."

Koscheck riled up some people with the statement which prompted him to respond to the controversy on his official website, Josh Koscheck UFC Fighter - Mixed Martial Arts

It is impossible for ME (KOS) to be racist against white people when Im half white and half black, not to mention that the most important people in my life are my grand parents who are 100 percent white.

Now the rest of my family is white also, my mother, brother and sisters are all white, and last but not least my girlfriend is white, I know for a fact that I loves both races and I do not look at people by color, Im a educated human being who happens to be a ultimate fighter, so for you folks that are trying create a situation that does not exist find something better to do!!!

sounds like the "MY BEST FRIEND IS BLACK SO" argument, but it doesnt matter because i dont see Kos in the wrong at all with his comments anyway

He is wrong about not being able to be racist against white people because so many of his close ones are in fact white. It's even perfectly possible to be racist against your own "race" , even though it might sound weird.

If the situation were reversed and Hughes said Kos had no athletic ability because he's half black everyone would be up in arms. Americas double standard at it's finest.

The controversy travels fast... Kos, just be a man, you ****ed up. No one questions that you may not be a racist. But that comment was certainly a pathetic one. It was loud and clear that you thought white people have no athletic ability(!). Suck it up.

I dont think Kos is a racist but his comment about Hughes being white just made absolutely no sense. At best he was just using a stereotype that white people typically arent as good athletes as some other ethnic groups.

Also, the argument "It is impossible for ME (KOS) to be racist against white people when Im half white and half black, not to mention that the most important people in my life are my grand parents who are 100 percent white." is complete BS. Just because youre a certain color / ethnic background doesnt exclude you from the same rules that define being a racist.

I am half chinese and half everything else, i make fun of every race equally and personally never had a problem with it and no one ever seems offended.

I am from a very multicultural family so i guess i don't see race as a barrier. In that way i can see where he is coming from.

So. I dunno. I don't see too much wrong with what Koscheck said, but do agree that if Hughes had said something about Blacks in a similar vein?

Hughes would be suspended by The UFC right n ow.

But.. Historically, I think African Americans have gained the right to say what they want in the sense of what their ancestors had to endure at the hands of White men.

But that's all I'm gonna say about that right or wrong.

Listen, Kos was just plain wrong. So is any other fighter of any race that makes race a part of their smack talking. I wasn't here when the other fighter made his comment. If I had been I would have called him wrong on it as well. White, black, brown, red, yellow, green, doesn't make any difference. Another guy's race shouldn't be a part of your "smack talk".

You might have not seen it before it was locked, it was a couple pages of just a race war.

As for KOS, I dont think its too big of a deal, Im not offended but i think that he could have just trashed Hughes for anything else. Just because people in your life are white or you are white doesnt cross out racism. Thomas Jefferson may have had a half black child and he had slaves, Hitler killed white people. Cop out answer.
