Former football star, actor faces multiple charges

By Paul Farhi, Washington Post | September 17, 2007

WASHINGTON - Las Vegas police arrested O.J. Simpson yesterday and charged the former football star with six felony counts in connection with an alleged hotel room robbery, placing Simpson in his most serious legal jeopardy since his acquittal on double murder charges in 1995.

Simpson, 60, was arrested yesterday morning, three days after two sports memorabilia dealers told police that Simpson and five other men burst into their room at the Palace Station Hotel and Casino, several of them brandishing guns, and seized various mementos, including several items autographed by the NFL Hall of Famer.

Police charged Simpson with two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count each of conspiracy to commit burglary and burglary with a firearm. He was booked last night in the Clark County Detention Center; a judge ordered him held without bail, police said.

At a news conference last night, police said there were no indications that Simpson was carrying a weapon during the alleged robbery, nor was there evidence of physical harm to anyone.

Simpson has repeatedly asserted his innocence in a series of interviews since Thursday, saying that no guns were involved and that he had conducted a "sting operation" to retrieve property that had been taken from him years earlier by a former sports agent.

"I'm O.J. Simpson. How am I going to think that I'm going to rob somebody and get away with it?" he told the Los Angeles Times in a story published yesterday. "You've got to understand, this ain't somebody going to steal somebody's drugs or something like that. This is somebody going to get his private [belongings] back. That's it. That's not robbery."

Simpson, who lives in South Florida, said he traveled to Las Vegas after an auction house owner, Thomas Riccio, told him that two collectors, Bruce Fromong and Alfred Beardsley, were there selling memorabilia belonging to him. Riccio met Simpson and several other men in the lobby of the hotel and escorted them to the room, according to Simpson's account.

Beardsley later told the celebrity news website TMZ.com that members of Simpson's party entered the room and inquired about buying the suit that Simpson wore on the day in October 1995 when a Los Angeles jury found him not guilty of the murders of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman. After Simpson entered the room, Beardsley said he was directed "at gunpoint" to pack up various items that Simpson said were his.

Among the items were Simpson's Hall of Fame certificate, a picture of the former University of Southern California and Buffalo Bills running back with former FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover, family photos, and a pair of cleats used by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana, police said. The dealers told police the items are worth about $75,000.

However, in an interview Saturday with the Associated Press, Beardsley - who has known Simpson for about 25 years - said he wants the case dropped and that he's "on O.J.'s side."

On Saturday, Las Vegas police arrested Walter Alexander, 46, of Mesa, Ariz., for his alleged role in helping Simpson.

Police said they had recovered two handguns allegedly used in the incident, some of the alleged stolen property, and some of the clothing worn by the suspects.

Las Vegas police are seeking four other men, said Captain James Dillon, who heads the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's robbery and homicide bureau. Lieutenant Clint Nichols of the department described the men as having "a social relationship" with Simpson, but denied reports that they were off-duty police officers.

Simpson was arrested at his room at the Palms resort and led away in handcuffs. The arrest took place "without incident," said Dillon.

He told the Associated Press on Saturday that he did not call the police to help reclaim the items because he has found the police to be unhelpful ever since the slaying of his former wife and Goldman in June 1994.

And this is an audiotape released earlier today.. here's the story..

O.J.'s Alleged Robbery -- Caught on Tape!

**WARNING: This audio contains graphic content. Listener discretion is advised.**

TMZ has obtained an audio tape of O.J. Simpson's confrontation with a sports memorabilia dealer that led to his arrest on felony robbery charges. In it, you hear someone say, "You against the motherf*****g wall."

Name: 0916_oj_audio_launch_1.jpg
Views: 70
Size: 57.6 KB

The tape was recorded by Thomas Riccio, who co-owns the auction house Universal Rarities. Riccio met up with Simpson just before the confrontation at the Palace Station Casino on Thursday night.

We're told Riccio was on hand to help Simpson prove certain memorabilia being auctioned by Alfred Beardsley was ill-gotten. Riccio says he believed Simpson was going to confront Beardsley in the hotel room to give him an ultimatum -- either hand over the goods or Simpson would call the cops.

Riccio turned his Olympus digital voice recorder on before the group entered the room -- a group that included Simpson and four other men. Almost immediately, Simpson went wild, hurling profanities at Beardsley and another memorabilia dealer, Bruce Fromong.

The confrontation lasts six minutes. It is graphic and telling. Simpson is clearly the ringleader. Simpson repeatedly says, "Think you can steal my s**t and sell it?"

We're told Riccio also recorded the police interview with Beardsley and Fromong. Riccio also claims he has audio of Beardsley and Fromong conceding they didn't have a right to the memorabilia. Riccio also says he has audio of Bruce Fromong saying he helped Simpson hide money in offshore accounts.

And there's this: Riccio's partner, Jeff Woolf, says Simpson left a message on Riccio's cellphone trying to convince him that there was no gun involved in the robbery.

Man o man! This is totally crazy!

I'm following up the news yesterday and today.. And I'm not sure.. He may end up been released, again! Or even ends up doing 30 years jail time!

It's gonna be interesting to see how all of this fold up!

Any feedback on the case people?? Krav??

It's like Al Capone. I mean, Capone killed, murdered, and ran the mob like a ruthless dictator. But, what did they get him with? Tax evasion! OJ Simpson kills two people in brutal fashion, and they will likely get him for armed robbery. It's a weird world out there.

I just watched a lawyer saying on the Glenn Beck show that, he may end up been released if the judges have enough evidence or witnesses that there wasn't a gun on him.. That no guns were involved.. In addition to the fact that he [Simpson] believes that he was getting his belongings back!!!!!!!!!

Did he go so far getting his stuff back? I really don't know?

O.J. has got to be one of the biggest dumbasses in the history of man. How could a person who just barely got away with murder do something like this. I think he has it in his head that since he got away with killing his wife that he's above the law.

I hope he dies in prison.

Yeah! All OJ wanted was a knife, a bloody glove that didn't fit right, and his Bruno Malli shoes. Those bastards had no right to that stuff. He did right by holding them at gun-point and terrorizing them into giving his evidence, er, I mean his collectablies back. He has every right to those items.

/sarcasm off

I'd think if someone stole my ****, I wouldnt risk myself getting into trouble and just call the cops with the location of my stuff and the people who stole them?

I mean call me crazy, but that's what I think I'd do and hope most normal people would do.

Now you break into my house?

That's a different story. I'm like the roach motel. You'll come in, but you won't come out.

people saying im ignorant must just be very accepting of being robbed b/c as a general rule of thumb if somebody steals from you, you do your best too get it back. Maybe not go as far as using a gun too get it back but getting it back is #1 priority.

that being said oj simpson is an idiot considering his situation.

I understand what you're saying, and please dont take the fact that I'm a cop saying this, but..

if you try to track your stuff down yourself and get it back from the person that stole it from you? I understand the pride thing, but do you think that's the safest thing in the world? How do you know that the person isnt gonna shoot your ass dead for trying?

It happens alot.

Best to just call the po po.

First of all, this a little off topic, but what is it with you, Jawshaterra, and constantly using "too" instead of "to"?? I see that in all of your posts.. It's not funny man! It's irritating.. Really sorry too break too you like this man I love your posts "the contents" though!

About OJ Simpson, I totally agree with the others, he's a stupid dumbass for planning a "sting operation" as he said rather than calling the cops on them.. But I understand what he did.. Beside, there wasn't a gun on him as some witnesses said though..

Now, do I agree that he should be thrown in jail for the rest of his life?

I don't know?? Maybe no.. Because it's obvious that they got his stuff.. he wants em back.. but the idiot really believes that the best way of acquiring them back is like what he did.. No one got hurt or got shot at..

So to sum my opinion up.. I don't think that he deserves such a harsh punishment this time.. Although he did before!

I guess we'll have to wait and see and how the case is gonna fold up...

It was a convicted felon that tipped OJ off about the merchandise and wouldn't ya know, the same felon is the one that brought the recording device "just in case anything happened." As much as I dislike OJ, he was set up and more than likely he'll be acquitted.

Ownership od the collectable items will not be a factor at the trial, if it goes to court. The court will not care who owned what in this case. OJ Simpson, and any other civilian, are NOT allowed to run a sting operation. The police and such officials are the only ones allowed to run that type of operation. So, no matter what Simpson says about "his stuff" he will get charged with robbery and other counts (seven total charges).

Set up or not, he went into an illegal activity of his own free will. I highly doubt that he will get off on this one due to his being set up by anybody.

At this point they have an audio tape which only proves he was there, and the word of convicted felon to convince a jury that he's guilty. He got off a double murder charge mainly because he was "set-up" by Mark Fuhrman and Fuhrman is/was a cop. This bozo that made this tape won't be taken seriously by a jury of his peers, and once again OJ will have the best defense money can buy. OJ will walk.

You could be correct. In some rape cases, the rapist gets off because he raped a prosititute. In some custody cases, the mother may have lost custody because she had too many boyfriends after she and the husband separated. The victims and witnesses of these cases often get attacked by the defense. It did not mean that a prostitute cannot be raped. But, a jury (that is not full of hookers) will look down on a prostitute like she deserved what happened.

Just because the guy that made that tape had been a convict does not mean that he lied, that he acted wrongfully, or that he knew exactly what would happen. How many times will OJ Simpson get off because he claims that he was set up by somebody? Fool me once, right? Fool me twice? I highly doubt it with our courts, but it could happen.

CNN and MSNBC and FOX News each ran polls asking people whether or not they believed that Simpson had been guilty of the murders back on the 1990s. The results were very close in each poll: averaged 86% said that OJ Simpson had been guilty of killing two people.

I doubt very seriously that OJ Simpson will get a jury that has not heard about his murder trial, the outcome, and that most people think that he did it. So, OJ Simpson will either take a plea bargain or face a trial that in all due likelihood he will lose.

I mean, who will the jury believe? The guy that supposedly set up OJ Simpson? Or, will they believe OJ Simpson? Which would be more credible at this point?
