Default Need Dog Help II

Thanks for those who helped me look for a new dog. I went to SPCA (Animal shelter) last weekend with my kids and picked out a great half shephard/half rottweiler mix puppy about 3 months or so old. We found out right away the first night that he had some house training due to him barking/whining to be let out to "go". He was given his first parvo shot Saturday.

Problems started Wednesday night. He was very active the first few days, then started with all the signs and symptoms of Parvo. We took him to the Emergency Vet which confirmed he has Parvo. The SPCA then admitted him to the Animal Hospital and they say with aggressive treatment they can survive 95% of the time. The key is to get them over that initial illness.

Problem is. Now they say I have to bleach EVERYTHING. HIs cage, etc. He's a housedog, so I'm gonna blast everything with as much bleach as I can.The problem I have is trying to figure out where outside he might have gotten into that can have contracted the Parvo virus.

I'm thinking of calling today and totally concreting my backyard. I have a fairly clean yard with a pool with two adult dogs as neighbors so that's the only way I can figure that somehow the surrounding environment is harboring the Parvo Virus.

what I'm basically asking is for any FF dog owners who are good and "Nuking" so to speak your immediate environment for Parvo? Cause right now, I bought 50 gallons of Bleach and I'm in the mind to just bleach the **** out of my entire yard and building a fence arond my back door to limit where he can go to do his business if he comes back.

PLEASE FIGHT FORUM. MY KIDS AND I FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS DOG IN THE LAST WEEK. Any advice on anything I can do to really try and control the possibility I hve Parvo dormant somewhere in my yard?

Best I can find is that you need to clean up all the doggie poo and then spray down your yard with the bleach. I am sure there are other products though that would do the job without killing all your grass.

i can't believe that you're going to have to give your yard a bleach shower. i guess if thats what it takes to keep your dog healthy then you're going to have to go through with it.

One thing I am is a clean freak. Not a neat freak, but a clean one. I get all icky inside if I know even something like that is anywhere near my house.

Several years ago I killed 3 chickens and two goats when I lived on a farm because it was infested with rats and I bought 400 lbs of Rat poison and spent 4 days filling every hole, ditch, crack, dark area etc with rat poison, and unfortunately the animals accidentally ate some of the poison in the affected areas I treated.

I solved the rat issue on the farm, but freakin killed some livestock along the way! Oh, and over the course of two months I collected 92 dead rats. I need to get this way with the parvo. But What I hate is that it's a virus and microscopic so how do I know if it's gonna work?

I live in a residential area right now, so it's just a matter of killing the backyard grass and some flowers.

Hmmmm, my neighbors had puppies a few years ago, and most of them had parvo. I beleive the most common way a dog gets it is by orally contacting dog feces. So like dirty fighter said, just keep the doo doo to a minimum.

Good to see you treat animals so well Krav

I wish I could help you but I still hope that your puppy grows up healthy!

Maybe puppy got it from the shelter .

One thing people do wrong when training pups, is when the dog **** on the carpet and then the master puts the dogs face in the **** saying no. I hear doing that sometimes gives the dog mix messages and eats the ****.

Haha. I didnt do that. Like I said, the dog was house trained a bit I found out the first night. I cleaned all the crap right away when he went out, and the other posteri s right, he more than likely got it in the shelter.

But..

I've nuked my backyard anyway.

Man, I went to Orchard Supply warehouse and bought this industrial sprayer and I dilluted about 25 gallons of bleach with water and blasted my yard.

I think I just about killed everything.

House starts tomorrow.
