Default TUF 6: Episode 7

Here we go again...Team Serra is 5-1 over Team Hughes now. And judging by the upcoming promos, Hughes is (even more) frustrated. I can't say I blame him - his team is getting schooled.

So who's left?
Serra has George (The Australian) & Jon (War Machine)
Hughes has Jared (J-Rock) & Tommy (The Redhead)

In a previous episode, Team Hughes was talking about matching up J-Rock with George. It sounds like that could be a good one.

Once we get to the quarterfinals, most of the lesser fighters will have already been weeded out. Good!

(I'm just glad we don't have to see silly challenges anymore...remember the gay sock removal game in the octagon from an earlier season?)

Yeah, J-Rock vs. George seems likely.
But if Hughes wants to ensure 1 more win, he might put J-Rock against War Machine.

I just remember from the promos that it was J-Rock and War Machine who squared up in the house. J-Rock slapped WM's hat off, and WM seemed to go for a takedown at that point. Are they gonna get kicked off? Or do they put them against each other (like with Leben and Kos). Or does that happen much later in the season?
I also remember Tommy being pretty bloody in the intro. I hope that's a good sign for Team Serra.

Yeah, from the what I've seen of the show and the pics it looks like George is one of Serra's best fighters. Hughes is going to get the last 2 pics so it should be interesting.

If Hughes is smart, he will put J-Rock up against War Machine. J-Rock vs George would be a good fight, but I would rather see it later on.

Oh yeah...good call - I do remember seeing a standoff in the house...didn't realize it was J-Rock with War Machine.

Yup, Tommy gets bloody. Hmmm...was that from a fight or a grueling practice?

Aussie Aussie Aussie!

Oi! Oi! Oi!

George's striking looked pretty decent. J-Rock looked scared to engage.

I was a bit surprised at how tentative J-Rock was. About 1 minute in I said, "George is going to knock him out." He had no answer to those right hands and no head movement. It was only a matter of time before he got caught.

Yeah after I saw the first 30 seconds of the fight, I figured George would knock him out. J-Rock had a nice submission attempt, but that was about it.

George seems very dedicated....glad to see he wasn't at all phased by all the b.s. his teammate(s) were giving him about waking up.

Working with Serra and his coaching staff is really paying off. It's almost to a point where it appears Serra's guys are either just better fighters or Hughes' guys just don't relate to him as a coach for whatever reason. I guess not everyone has the Miletich mindset.

Even though I like Serra, J-Rock was pretty funny when he was making fun of him. He can be annoying but he does his job very well.

6 to 1 and the one is the loyal Joey pick.

At least Matty gets to prep a fellow farm guy for next week's show. Team Hughes is due, that's for sure.

Those guys on Team Serra were getting annoying, about complaining to George about not waking them up. If they would go to sleep at a decent hour, then they would wake up without George's help before 10:30.

Hughes's only winner is a guy who is already a professional fighter and shouldn't even be on this show. I know Opsy will probably come to the defense of his boy, but Hughes is getting out coached, plain and simple.

Yeah, what was up with that crap?
I don't see any reason why he should have to wake up his GROWN team mates or face being "blacklisted". How ridiculous.
Are they not allowed to have alarm clocks in the house?

Just thinking.... even if Tommy wins. Serra has pick for semis. Won't he put the two TEAM HUGHES fighters against each other so he only has to worry about 1 competitor?

That would be the smart/dick move to pull. Its funny, when the picks went down I thought Hughes picked the better team....Guess I was wrong.

He might have picked the better fighters, but I am honestly starting to think he can't coach. You heard him tonight say, "I'm not trying to make a striker out of a grappler, George!" Well.... maybe you should be. Serra brought a boxing coach, himself, and Pete Sell. So he's got a world class BJJ guy and MMA fighter in himself, a professional striking coach, and Pete Sell who has heavy hands and solid BJJ. Hughes has a great wrestler and MMA fighter in himself, Robbie Lawler who has good hands (but I have no idea how he is as at coaching hands) and another guy whose purpose I have yet to figure out.

Serra's guys are clearly learning new skills (I base this on performance and comments from the fighters), so far I've yet to hear one Team Hughes fighter talk about how much he's learned. Maybe screaming at your guys and roughing them up in practice might not be the best way to coach. He's had more in practice injuries than wins so far.

Regardless, this show is not serving as a good advertisement for the gym that he and Lawler recently opened.

I will give you the most simple explanation that I can. They are there for 7 weeks. The first flight happens in the 2nd week. Realistically, how much can you really teach someone in that period of time? He says he is not going to teach a grappler how to become a striker because you don't stray from the fighter's biggest strength going into this show. Look to Matt and many others in the sport who have been trying to become a striker for years and still have little to show for it. But you want him to work a miracle in as little as two weeks? Let's Get Real. You can sharpen up the tool sets that they come in with, do your best to make that proper match ups, and formulate a game plan.

That being said here is my take on this episode:
-- I take Mac's side to a certain degree , Hughes needs to realize his fighters are not that experienced. This is one of the big reasons his team is not winning
-- Matt should have remained a little tougher imo. You can't potentially demoralize your team because some prick's team is winning.
-- Witch doctor? What the eff? lol
-- Hughes will have the last laugh

edit: again, one of Hughes' fighters fails to implement the game plan and tries to forget about his grappling and become a striker The Rock Crumpled

It's not going to matter in the end. I think that Mac, a Hughes member, will take the whole show quite easily therefore making up for all of team Hughes' losses.

J-Roc looked scared in there, he threw like 3 strikes the whole time. Opsy is right, how much do you think that the fighters can learn in the short time that they are there? A wrestler will not become a striker and vice versa. Working on their strengths and formulating a game plan to accommodate those strengths is all Hughes can really do. When his fighters throw the game plan out the window Hughes has a right to be pissed.

I disagree. Regardless of the finally out come of the final fight, Hughes was schooled ( you might say ) . Danzig is a seasoned fighter. He has that advantage going in to it. He is one of my top picks to win it all. And it has NOTHING to do with HUGHES teaching or coaching. These guys are newbies in the MMA game. It shows. I don't put alot of thought into the Hughes vs Serra deal. The fighter make more of the fights than the coaches do. But one prop to Serra is that his guys seem to listen to him alot better and stick with a game plan.If Danzig wins it all, the damage has been done to the Hughes ego/camp. It doesn't and can't erase the fights that have already taken place. IMO By just listening to Danzig talk and from his own persoanl blog he seems to really not like Hughes very much. Bible deal and coaching ways. Funny if he won it .LOL... Im not for one side or the other. Its about the fighter in the end and not the big heads of either coach. Matt S. seems to be a better coach though. Doesn't mean his a better fighter than Hughes. But a better coach. IMO WarDawg
