WEC 33 - Filho v. Sonnen II
This will be in Las Vegas.
WEC Middleweight Championship: Paulo Filho vs. Chael Sonnen
WEC Light Heavyweight Championship: Doug Marshall vs. Brian Stann
Welterweight Bout: John Alessio vs. Brock Larson
Bantamweight Bout: Kenji Osawa vs. Chris Manuel
Lightweight Bout: Marcus Hicks vs. Ed Ratcliff
Middleweight Bout: Bryan Baker vs. Nissen Osterneck
I was glad to see Osterneck on this card.
The WEC has some good fighters...and good fights.
The matchup between Urijah & Pulver will likely happen this summer sometime.
Quote:
Contrary to previous reports indicating that World Extreme Cagefighting would head to Sacramento, Calif. in March, MMAWeekly has learned that the promotion will return to Las Vegas at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on March 26.
Initial reports indicated that WEC would head to Sacramento to hold its March event, due to a headline bout featuring hometown fighter Urijah Faber defending his featherweight championship against former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver.
For whatever reason, the bout did not materialize – although indications are that the bout will likely take place this summer – and the event was relocated back to the WEC’s home base of Las Vegas.
Paulo Filho defending his middleweight championship against Chael Sonnen for the second time in three months will now headline the event. These two met at the last WEC with Filho winning by armbar, but not without controversy. The fight was stopped soon after Filho locked on the armbar, but without any indication of Sonnen giving up.
In the co-main event, light heavyweight champion Doug Marshall will defend his title against U.S. Marine Brian Stann. Marshall comes off a submission victory over Cuban Ariel Gandulla at WEC 31, while Stann enters the fight undefeated at 5-0.
In a No. 1 contenders match, Xtreme Couture welterweight John Alessio takes on powerful wrestler Brock Larson with the winner likely getting another crack at the welterweight championship.
Carlos Condit is the current 170-pound titleholder and will be defending his belt against Carlo Prater on Feb. 13 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Shooto standout Kenji Osawa will make his WEC debut as he takes on American Top Team fighter Chris Manuel in a bantamweight bout.
In an intriguing lightweight bout, Texan submission fighter Marcus Hicks takes on eccentric striker Ed Ratcliff. Hicks comes off a submission victory over Scott McAfee at WEC 30, while Ratcliff stopped Ultimate Fighter alumnus Alex Karalexis at WEC 31.
In a middleweight bout, Team Wildman fighter Bryan Baker takes on the debuting Nissen Osterneck.

I'm psyched to see Filho/Sonnen again. Hopefully Filho comes in at 100 percent this time, with no weight cutting issues...Lay off the cake!! For the record, I think it was a justified stoppage in their last fight. That armbar was on air tight, and his elbow was in serious jeopardy before Filho even cranked it full strength.

Is this because of the controversy around their last fight, or do they just have a weak MW division?
I heard on the Beatdown that the winner of Larson/Allesio would likely get a rematch with Condit. I wish they'd just bring in some new talent rather than churning out rematches.

So dumb regarding the rematch. Sonnan yelled TAP, that is a tap in the unified rule book. What a waste, hopefully Filho subs him again

I don't think he was yelling tap. From what I understand, the ref was asking him if he wanted out and Sonnen was shouting "no".

If Sonnen keeps the fight standing this time like he SHOULD have last time, he'll win.

Sonnen will win this time, he knows not to get over-confident now and will probably keep it standing.

Sonnen will win I think. He has good TD defense and has the edge standing.

Their first fight was great. Filho, the supposed best MW in the world, was getting hammered by the more experienced Sonnen. Trust me, Sonnen rarely repeats a mistake. I highly doubt that he will get submitted again. I think that Sonnen will win the rematch.

I agree with the outcome, but I also think Filho will have a better game plan this time. The last match was one-sided until Filho pulled out the armbar. This match will be alot closer.
I'm starting to like WEC cards more than the UFC's

First off, I'm happy to see the Filho v. Sonnen fight is back on but as I mentioned in the original post, I was looking forward to seeing Osterneck (he's out due to a shoulder injury). Oh well.
Expect more turnover with these WEC belts. I'm gonna say Sonnen wins this time and Doug Marshall will come in this fight overconfident (a la Razor Rob) and lose his belt to Stann.
Here's the full card:
Quote:
The World Extreme Cagefighting organization recently announced the full card for its March 26 event, and despite some initial hesitation, WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho (16-0) will fight Chael Sonnen (19-9-1) after all.
"WEC: Filho vs. Sonnen" takes place at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev., and airs live in high-definition on the VERSUS network at 9 p.m. ET.
In addition to Filho vs. Sonnen, WEC light heavyweight champ Doug Marshall will put his belt on the line against Brian Stann.
Filho and Sonnen first met in December at WEC 31. Filho kept his undefeated streak alive with a second-round submission via armbar. However, the fight ended with a bit of controversy as Sonnen claimed he never verbally tapped. Sonnen groaned in pain from the submission -- and it was clearly audible to the television audience -- but he said it was never intended to be a verbal tap-out.
Earlier this week the Brazilian website TATAME spoke to Filho, who said he was pulling out of the bout due to personal reasons. However, his manager, Ed Soares, has since told multiple media outlets that Filho's camp has rallied around the fighter and that the bout will continue as scheduled.
However, one bout that didn't hold up was Nissen Osterneck vs. Bryan Baker. Osterneck, an undefeated middleweight prospect, has suffered a shoulder injury. On Thursday Logan Clark, a former UFC fighter, told MMAjunkie.com (MMA blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps - MMAjunkie.com) that he's stepped up to replace Osterneck.
The full line-up for the WEC 33 card includes:
* Champ Paulo Filho vs. Chael Sonnen (for WEC middleweight title)
* Champ Doug Marshall vs. Brian Stann (for WEC light heavyweight title)
* Marcus Hicks vs. Ed Ratcliff
* Steve Cantwell vs. Tim McKenzie
* Blas Avena vs. Hirumitsu Miura
* John Alessio vs. Brock Larson
* Rich Crunkilton vs. Sergio Gomez
* Alex Serdyukov vs. Ryan Stonitsch
* Chris Manuel vs. Kenji Osawa
* Bryan Baker vs. Logan Clark

Maybe its just me but I HATE HATE HATE HATE Brian Stann. I know its cool he was in the service and all, and I respect the hell out of any soldier past or present but he has next to nothing that makes him stand out as any kind of contender. Especially the way they have protected him.

At last info I had he was still a current member of the United States Marine Corps.
Brian "All American" Stann
In all fairness to Brian he has steamrolled everybody they have put in front of him. I guess that's all he can do, he doesn't set the cards. I hope we will see a very good fight between Brian and Doug. It could well end very early, with either guy taking a KO or TKO win.

Other than Filho/Sonnen II, the only fight I'm really looking forward to is Alessio/Larson.
