Default Nick Diaz News

At least this time, EliteXC says the event in Hawaii could serve as the return fight date...instead of Nick Diaz is definitely fighting at that event.

Either way it's good to hear he's recovering from the eye surgery. Love him or hate him, his fights are usually pretty exciting.

EliteXC has already announced upcoming Feb. 15 and March 29 fight dates, and during yesterday’s media conference call, Live Events President Gary Shaw announced one more: April 26. The event, which will take place in Hawaii, could serve as the return fight date for Nick Diaz (15-7).

MMAjunkie.com (UFC News & Rumors - MMA News - UFC Fighters - UFC Event Recaps and Previews - MMAjunkie.com) first mentioned the pending event in yesterday’s media call recap (which includes information about Feb. 15’s main event between Kimbo Slice and David “Tank” Abbott).

After first producing the Frank Shamrock vs. Cung Le event in March, the California-based EliteXC then heads to Hawaii. Diaz, a former UFC fighter who recently signed a long-term deal with EliteXC only to be upset by K.J. Noons in a lightweight title fight, recently had surgery but could return at the event.

“He’s had surgery on his eye to repair all that scar tissue, and I think that Nick needed a rest,” said Shaw “He’s doing the right thing for Nick right now, and we’ve encouraged him to rest as well.

“But I think he’s fighting on the April 26 card.“

As for an opponent, Shaw isn’t ruling out a rematch with Noons — but not right away.

“We eventually want to give him another shot at K.J. Noons,” Shaw said. “He gave K.J. Noons a shot. But not right back.“

The two fighters met at EliteXC’s “Renegade” event in September for the organization’s vacant lightweight (160-lb.) title — with Diaz the heavy favorite. However, Noons connected on a number of blows, and the bout was stopped after the first round due to multiple cuts on Diaz’s face. Diaz was furious over the TKO stoppage and flipped off the ringside doctor and shoved a camera as he stormed out of the cage.

He hasn’t fought since then.

In addition to Noons, EliteXC officials have mentioned the possibility of a rematch between Diaz and Takanori Gomi. This past February, PRIDE hosted what was only its second show on U.S. soil. Executives wanted to match Gomi, their prized lightweight champion, with an American fighter who had widespread appeal. They ultimately chose Diaz, and in one of the year’s most memorable fights, Diaz bounced back from a series of blows and an early knockdown to score a rare gogoplata submission victory in the second round.

However, after Diaz failed a drug test due to marijuana, the Nevada State Athletic Commission stripped Diaz of the win and ruled the fight a no-contest.

Diaz is now 4-1 (with one no-contest) in his past six fights.

I really hope Nick decides to move back up in weight. He looked terrible in his last two fights and a lot of fingers have been pointed at cutting weight being the reason for this. He is an awesome fighter with a personality I really dig, hopefully he can come back strong and make waves in the WW division.

I love watching Diaz and hope he comes back strong. I also think WW would serve him better. I didn't see his fight w/ Noons, but I heard he was really drained.

If Nick Diaz is on the card you better believe Tony Starks will be watching, He always brings the excitement and his fights are like a rollercoaster ride. If he gets another crack at Noons, Nick will probably bring a better gameplan and should finally get his belt.

I'm with you guys - Nick is better at WW.

It was a rough fight against Noons...he wanted to keep fighting but the cut prevented that. Going into that match, he said the only way he'd lose is if he was cut...he might've come back as he did against Gomi but he really was getting beat pretty good by KJ - who looked great that night.

I would like to see him at WW to. I mean he took Karo to a split decision, and many people thought he won that fight. He is best at 160, but 170 is better than 155.

Yeah I agree w/ you but I cant help to think that Diaz would have eventually figured out a way to win. It just seems like all of his fights are like that; he starts off bad and then finishes strong. I believe he would have won had he not gotten cut, I dont want to take anything away from Noons though b/c he was fighting a really great fight.....

diaz has had a more exhausting time over last 12 months than alot of fighters, a well deserved rest and a possible rematch with noons in the future should see him avenge that loss.

yeah i also believe diaz would have found a way to win had the cuts not prevented him from continuing, he fights better under pressure and when on the back foot,e.g gomi, his face was a mess after suffering a bit of and onslaught but he stayed in the pocket and then got that awesome submission.

I understand why people will not like Nick personally, but how can you not like his style?

EliteXC's lightweight division is 160.

I love Nick as a fighter, and he has been side tracked by dumb stuff he's done.

I know he's a hard worker and comes prepared. He needs to stop thinking that everyone is against him and just fight. He needs to stop pointing fingers about why refs screw him, and trust me I do believe he gets screwed occasionally by refs.

On the flip side, he has shown all MMA fans enormously outstanding MMA fights. From Lawler, to his Jackson fights, to of course Gomi and Parisyan and Sanchez fights.

Even in defeat he shows true talent and aggression that you can't teach. You just h ave it.

His brother? Seems to be a calmer version of him with INSANE jiu jitsu and IMO better jiu jitsu. In fact I give Nate alot of credit for being TUF winner and handling it humbly. Not mentioning his brothers problems with The UFC, and when he mentions it, it's brief and respectful. The last couple of his UFC fights, The UFC is at least allowing Nick to be in the corner and that's a start in reconciliation. Nate on the other hand is always respectful, always thanks Dana and the Fertittas after each win, etc.

I wish Nick well and hope he overcomes the personal attitudes that sometimes I think get in the way of his true greatness. Because he can be great. He's only freakin 26 or something now. Nothing but nothing but upside if he plays his cards right.

Default Nick Diaz set to face Corbbrey

Five Ounces of Pain | Exclusive: Nick Diaz expected to return to action on April 26 in Hawaii vs. Muhsin Corbbrey

Quote:
Graduation day has arrived for ShoXC prospect Muhsin Corbbrey, as ProElite.com (SamCaplan.ProElite.com) has learned that Corbbrey has accepted a EliteXC bout against Nick Diaz for April 26 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The news comes from a source close to Corbbrey’s camp. It has not been confirmed whether Diaz has signed a bout agreement for the fight.

Corbbrey is 2-0 competing for EliteXC’s ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series franchise on SHOWTIME. He made his debut against “Lethal” Lee Gibson on July 27, winning via unanimous decision. His last bout was a comeback victory over Southshore Sportfighting’s Bobby McMaster during October’s ShoXC. After being dominated for much of the first round, Corbbrey rallied by catching McMaster in a guillotine choke and forcing him to tap with one second left in the round.

He has competed as a professional boxer and professional Muay Thai fighter. In addition to his vast standup experience, Corbbrey has successfully competed in several grappling tournaments such as NAGA and ISCF. He trains grappling and MMA with UFC lightweight contender Din Thomas while he works with John Blanken on his standup.
