the JKD straight lead
here is a punch that i am surprised is'nt more popular in MMA. the Jeet Kune Do straight lead. its like a jab on steroids. this strike is at the core of Bruce Lee's art. with practice it can be both powerful and quick as lightning. the fact that its a straight punch that comes from the lead hand makes it difficult to see defend.

i asked about this punch and my trainer told me that it is a great thing to work on but at times leaves you open to other attacks and is hard to hit if the person has good foot movement. like all other things though i guess train with it and if you see the time to use it BAM.... be like gsp spinning back kick... doesnt use it to much but enough to blast guys almost every time.

i agree that its not something that will work against everyone all of the time but with practice it could be something that will win you a few fights, much like GSP's spinning back kick or the flying knee James Irvin caught Terry Martin with. i thought it to be a more effective version of the superman punch since it uses your strong hand in the lead position, making it that much closer to your target. you could very easily catch someone with it if they did'nt expect it and really, who would?

i want to get good with stuff like this because i am very good lefty... almost as good as i am righty... so when i train punching and kicking and knees.... i can flow back and forth between stances... like a lot of times i will stand south paw to help pick apart a leg... a few inside kicks a few outside... then a huge takedown... so if people are use to me standing lefty and throwing kicks then a huge straight right could end the fight... just like you said a well timed superman or a flying knee... i just think this is a perfect comparison to GSP's spinning kick

I've been practicing the JKD lead straight for months now, and it's grown to be one of my favorite attacks. I think of it more as a super-jab than a lead straight. I think JKD is seriously underestimated in MMA.

Luke Cummo has a background in JKD under Dan Inosanto in New York.
I rmember on the TUF show Matt Hughes once said: "Luke, you have moves from your JKD that aren't even legal in the UFC" and always wondered what Matt meant by that.
Striking wise I mean.

I didn't see that happen, but I know JKD does have a lot of eye pokes and groin kicks.

It was before one of the semi-finale fights, and Hughes was commenting on Cummo's kickboxing ability and said something like : With your JKD background, you have moves that are not legal in the UFC.
I wonder if certain angles of strikes are outlawed.

well, strikes to the throat are very illegal in the UFC, as are any choke that places the hands directly on the throat, i have often heard them refered to as "rapist chokes". JKD was never designed to be made usable for sport fighting so if you practiced JKD under one of Bruce's original students you're going to be a lethal street fighter that can't use 90% of what you know when you choose to fight under MMA rules.

LoL Bruce loved them groin grabing moves didn't he !!!!!!
I got a JKD book with a bunch of his techs in it.........Pretty brutal moves most of it isn't really legal in a MMA type fight..........But on the street !! Look out cuz there are no rules or refs to save your eyes and man sack !!

Yeah the people that think MMA is brutal would do well to stand outside a nightclub when there's a street fight. No rules no holds barred, no respect and not a hint of mercy. MMA will seem like a game of tig compared to watching 5 guys stomp on one guys head or watch them take a running kick at the victim.

One stands with the power hand foward, as opposed to the typical boxing type stance. I don't know all the details, but the fist is held vertical, which means better contact with the big knucks of the index and middle finger. The blow carries a ton of weight and force behind it. It's a great self defense weapon.

Bas Rutten believes in this also. His training tape he always speaks of the straight punch, "like a jab, but do it HARD! Every punch you throw, throw it HARD"!

different. The JKD stance is with the power hand foward; instead of a righty having the left hand foward, it's the opposite. The fist is held vertically as opposed to horizontally, and there is a lot of body weight behind the punch. There's a ton more details about it, but it is very much different than a hard jab.
