Striking from the bottom position
Being on the bottom is the last place anyone wants to be. Its bad enough for a fighter skilled in BJJ but 100 times worse for a stand up based fighter. Simple physics tell us that striking from the bottom is ineffective and leaves you open for attack. This brings me to something i recently read in a magazine. Using the uppercut to attack from the bottom. Maximium power is still lacking but the underside of the chin is a prime target and even a lesser punch can rattle the fighter in top position. Thoughts?

I think that if there was enough room to deliver uppercuts between the two fighters, the top man would be punching too much to uncover for a punch from the bottom.

Thats the beauty of it. I don't think you would need alot of room to deliver it. You would only need to know when and when not to attempt it. Best of all the guy on top would'nt be expecting it. You're not going to KO someone with it but i don't see why it could'nt be an option. You should test it out at your school and let us know how it worked out.

if you hit somebody on a pressure point, you don't need much strength at all.
I'm coming from a street fighting application, though.

You won't have much power though, because your hips are set in place, you cant rotate your body, and the ground is under you, so you can wind up, its just from the floor up. Maybe it would work if you landed a perfect shot, but its doubtful.

I've seen some fairly impressive elbows from the bottom. Pull the head down and introduce it to Mr. L. Bow, has caused at least one K.O.

Ever since the War Machine vs. Jared Rollins fight I've seen a lot of guys throwing the elbow to the top of the head with pretty good results.

I forgot to say that the article i read that got me thinking about the uppercut from the bottom was an interview with Dan Inosanto, possibly Bruce Lee's best known student. It was him who mentioned the uppercut as a possible weapon and went on to state that in training former boxer Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini is able to use it effectively. Maybe being a former pro-boxer is the key but you never know what might work if you train it enough.

Kurtis, ya know I'm actually surprised more guys don't do that...it's not the easiest thing to do but if you get in that J-Rock rhythm...

I'd agree. Good power striking (which I hope is what everyones intention is when striking), is dependent upon good core strength and torso movement and driving off the legs (the Rampage Ass Thing). You know "I put my ass into it".
And you simply can't do it from the ground off your back. I'm not saying you can't land stuff from the bottom, but it's debateable how much if any damage you'd do.

Isn't elbowing to the top of the head illegal ?

i also believe you can't use the elbow in a straight downward motion to any part of the body. The elbows that Anderson Silva used to beat Travis Lutter could've been considered illegal under that rule but it was'nt called as such so its a rule that is rarely if ever enforced or broken.
