Default What has MMA become?

I haven't been on this site for about 5 years and in that time a lot has changed
in the world of mma.UFC is now a household name and they have done a good job of getting the sport recognized throughout the world. My only question now is who has the control where is the commission?Who regulates the likes of the ufc nad thier practices. Many regular people think the ufc is mma!
which i think needs to be rectified asap. When buffer say's the uFC champion of the world it's so annoying are he ufc the equivilant of the WBC,WBA or IBF in boxing? If so is ok to be promoter also?Looking out for certain fighters should be part of thier job, just because dana likes someone. That's just not professional, and could be one of the things that prevent mma from really taking over from boxing.
The reason i'm writing this is because Dan Henderson's last fight from my knowledge was a loss to ramapage and he's awarded with another title fight?
I have loved Henderson for many years and i have always believed he was the best american fighter on the planet, but what was the justification to him getting that fight?
Now look at the situation with rampage he fights Liddell and beats him which you can guarentee didn't make Dana very happy and his reward was fighting henderson next.Talk about don't do me any favors, you couldn't find tougher opponent than that when he deserved a fight with an up and comer like they have done in boxing for years.Chuck thought he got an easy fight with a guy who had previously gotten knocked out in two minutes (kieth Jardin) and lost. That was justice as far as i'm concerned because jardin was obviously put there as a stepping stone for liddell to get back into the ring with rampage.
I just got a lot of issues with the way Dana does things ,sets up the people he likes and has created his own "good old bot network".

The same commission regualtes MMA as Boxing, and it's the state in which the event is held that regualtes that event. IE: Nevada State Althletic Commission.

I certainly agree with the "Champion of the World" titles. But every organization says that. They are that organizations champion of the world. Hendo held a belt from another organization, and different weight class when he fought Rampage in the UFC.

Henderson held both the LHW and MW equivalent titles in PRIDE.
When the UFC bought PRIDE, they set about unifying the titles.
Hendo had to fight both Rampage and Silva, so there wouldn't be any dispute by former PRIDE fighters who would feel screwed because their titles were now meaningless.

Also, the UFC is arguably the number 1 MMA promotion in the world, in terms of having most of the available quality fighters...so it's not too ludicrous for the average person to automatically associate MMA with the UFC.

I agree with people thinking UFC is mma. People always tell me their cousin is a UFC fighter. I try to tell them no he is an mma fighter. Only a handful of fighters get to the UFC.

Is this post a joke?

Hendo got two title fights because he had two pride titles. A loss to rampage at 205 should and didn't hold any bearing on his second unification bout which was against silva at 185.

As for page fighting hendo after beating liddell... you've got to be kidding me right? Last time I checked real champions should fight the most threatening opponent available. Champions shouldn't get easy matches. They are suppose to be the best and therefore must continue to beat the best to prove that they are the best.

As for the average person thinking that UFC=MMA, well you can't blame them for making that error. The UFC is currently unarguably the top mma org in the world. They have by far the deepest most talented divisions in the world. Anyone who argues otherwise is either dillusional, misinformed, or just plain resentful.

Also Jardine was and is not a "stepping stone". He is a very talented fighter.

Actually, UFC is the top MMA org in the USA. Ask someone in Japan, Brazil, Alaska, about MMA.

But if want people to read your posts and take you seriously , at least try to make the effort. I read the first line of this guys post and decided not to go through the rest of that poorly written post. Plus that the first line was "I haven't been on the site for 5 years" basically made me discount everything that was going to follow.

That's bull because white always said in the past that ufc had superior fighters in which case they would have to fight their way into contention for a ufc title. That kind of makes him an hypocrite. Not only that White really needed to explain that via short video document pre fight or get the commentators to explain why a fighter can loose one title fight and get rewarded with another straight away.

As for page fighting hendo after beating liddell... you've got to be kidding me right? Last time I checked real champions should fight the most threatening opponent available. Champions shouldn't get easy matches. They are suppose to be the best and therefore must continue to beat the best to prove that they are the best.

really, the name any champion that has made two title defenses of that caliber? You are talking about two of the toughest fighters in that division
back to back.Dana fed his boy chuck a supposedly easy touch with Jardin who didn't go along with the plan.Rampage should have been given an up and comer that's how it's always been. It's kind of a reward to get the fighter paid and build anticipation for the next big fight. For some reason rampage v hendo wasn't a major fight according to Dana because he didn't hype it that way.In fact that fight is one of the best match ups in ufc history in terms of quality of fighters.

As for the average person thinking that UFC=MMA, well you can't blame them for making that error. The UFC is currently unarguably the top mma org in the world. That's not the point. The point is the perception that regular people think the UFC is MMA should be changed and the UFC ,Elite and any other org. should present their fighters as their champion and their champion alone and not a world champion it's misleading.

Also Jardine was and is not a "stepping stone". He is a very talented fighter.
Yeah i know ,but he was ko'd within minutes of his last fight before he faced chuck,so that looks like a stepping stone to me especially when one takes into consideration that chuck is primarily a striker.

A lot of people thinking that UFC is MMA is a mistake that is pretty much impossible for a non-MMA fan to avoid, UFC has held 82+ events, has a prime time reality TV show on a popular network, and gets extremely high PPV buys, is there another MMA promotion in the world that has any of that? You don't see people saying "yeah my cousin is a EliteXC fighter" because EliteXC holds late night shows every couple of months on Showtime, and there most marketable fighter is 2-0. My sister's friend told me that her uncle was a UFC fighter, I said "who?" and she told me "Floyd Sword, he trains with something Gracie?" For those who don't remember Floyd Sword fought at the TUF 5 finale, he was submitted by Thales Leites but has a pretty impressive record of 14-3, my point? My sister's friend hadn't said "My uncle is a MMA fighter in the UFC" she said he was a UFC fighter, because in most peoples minds the UFC=MMA, ask the general public about PRIDE or EliteXC and they'll say "Oh you mean UFC?", because Dana White and the Fertittas spent years working the company slowly to the household name it's become.

Bruce Buffer saying "UFC Champion of the World" Ok that makes a difference if there is a fight between guys like Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca, those two aren't very well known fighters so if you say "He is the UFC Lightweight Champion..." Wow that's exciting but if you say "Sean Sherk, the UFC Lightweight Champion OF The World!" That build's more excitement for a fight because now your thinking "Wow I'm about to watch a World Title fight, this is awesome!" Complaining about that is pretty lame in my honest opinion, and then if you have a fight that's extremely anticipated such as Chuck Liddell vs. Randy Couture 3 then it just hypes the fight up even more, it's a pretty good announcing technique in my opinion and Buffer has the golden voice that can just get anyone excited for a main event title fight.

On Keith Jardine being a stepping stone, from my sig you can tell I'm probably Keith Jardine's biggest fan lol, he is far from a stepping stone he absolutely beat down the current #1 Contender to the UFC Light Heavyweight belt in Forrest Griffin, to the point where Forrest was crying because Jardine had bounced his head off the mat repeatedly, honestly one of the most vicious TKO's I've ever seen, after that though Jardine fought the unknown Houston Alexander and lost a huge upset in about two minutes, I'm gonna be the biased fan here and say Jardine was too overconfident in that fight I think, he was confident going in and then on his very first punch he drops him and then Houston starts to smash him, Jardine was climbing to his feet and stepping away but still had a knee or both knee's on the ground (can't remember) and Alexander knee'd him right in the mouth (in his fight with Alessio Sakara you find out how hard Alexander's knee's are), it's an illegal move which immediately following it he hit a punch on an already unconscious Jardine, following with a punch directly to the back of the head, two illegal moves one after the fight was over, Jardine's fight with Chuck wasn't a fight that Chuck was 'supposed' to win, it was a fight that saw two good fighters that had just been KO'd fight to see who started the climb back to the top, and Jardine did just what I thought he would and he kicked Chuck's ass.

On the Dan Henderson subject, he was the PRIDE Middleweight and Welterweight Champion, PRIDE was the #2 Company in the world, of course when the UFC bought PRIDE and got Henderson they wanted to unify the belts that they could, the fastest they could because UFC vs. PRIDE = $$$. And it did UFC 75 became the most watched UFC event in history, the main event saw exactly what the UFC wanted to happen with there champion leaving with the W, of course if they could get him to drop to 185 they'd pit him against Anderson Silva, honestly who else was there? Rich Franklin, Nate Marquardt, Travis Lutter... they'd all been demolished by Silva and they had the dream fight right there, UFC vs. PRIDE Silva vs. Henderson... course they did it, Henderson had done enough to earn it in my opinion.

Damn that was a long post.

understood, but we are getting to a point where certain things have to be established to set the sport up for the future. It has to done in the mold established in boxing.Promoters are just that. The ufc who in theory are nothing but an organization that provides a belt just like Pancrase,Heroes,Cage rage or whatever. It's not for the ufc to dictate who's heavyweight is the best and in the position that they are in the average fan will believe anything they say. When Randy was in his prime he was loosing in japan to overeem, that doesn't make him less of a fighter but it explains that when he won the ufc title at HW he wasn't the best. Now iv'e interviewed randy and i don't think i have met a nicer more genuine person in my life and i have been a fan ever since,so i say what i say without bias.I think we all owe the UFC much credit for making mma what it is today, worldwide.I just think based on his past Dana White cannot be trusted to control this sport without bias.

Bruce Buffer saying "UFC Champion of the World" Ok that makes a difference if there is a fight between guys like Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca, those two aren't very well known fighters so if you say "He is the UFC Lightweight Champion..." Knocked out cold in two minutes of his previous fight doesn't sound like he was supposed to be a test for chuck, and i think the dean of mean would be the first to admit that.I was incredibly happy when he won by the way as i believe he is a decent fighter who works hard.

On the Dan Henderson subject, he was the PRIDE Middleweight and Welterweight Champion, PRIDE was the #2 Company in the world, of course when the UFC bought PRIDE and got Henderson they wanted to unify the belts that they could, the fastest they could because UFC vs. PRIDE = $$$. the fight was of course going to happen, but to give henderson the fight after a loss regardless of the weight is bizarre and unprecedented in most legitmate sports.
Pride #2 in the world!?!?!?!?!? that's a matter of opinion the two most dominant current ufc champion s are ex pride fighters rampage and silva.Pride's HW champion is arguably the best fighter on the planet so i guess you would have to be a UFC advocate to imply the UFC was #1.
Yeah the UFC was up there but being #1 is debatable. That being said numerous ex pride fighters have come to the UFC and have found it hard in the cage, but that changes nothing imo.

If we are fans of mma then we need different sanctioning bodies E.G wba,wbc and ibf (in boxing)and let them act as those alone which means they don't go around buying their fighters houses ,hooking them up with commercials and sponsors. That would be strictly for promoters anything else would be a conflict of interest. That is the only way to bring the sport forward. The UFC is getting bigger sponsors all the time and that's a beautiful thing for them, and will only make things better for mma on the whole but playing favorites is wrong and will lead only to the demise of the UFC.They need to worry about guy's like Garry Shaw at elite because he's been in the boxing game forever and he is basically taking is knowledge and connections into mma.Why do you think he can get cbs to cover events now, that's a massive jump from spiketv.
