[quote=NateRupe;276104]A lot of people thinking that UFC is MMA is a mistake that is pretty much impossible for a non-MMA fan to avoid, UFC has held 82+ events, has a prime time reality TV show on a popular network, and gets extremely high PPV buys, is there another MMA promotion in the world that has any of that? You don't see people saying "yeah my cousin is a EliteXC fighter" because EliteXC holds late night shows every couple of months on Showtime, and there most marketable fighter is 2-0. My sister's friend told me that her uncle was a UFC fighter, I said "who?" and she told me "Floyd Sword, he trains with something Gracie?" For those who don't remember Floyd Sword fought at the TUF 5 finale, he was submitted by Thales Leites but has a pretty impressive record of 14-3, my point? My sister's friend hadn't said "My uncle is a MMA fighter in the UFC" she said he was a UFC fighter, because in most peoples minds the UFC=MMA, ask the general public about PRIDE or EliteXC and they'll say "Oh you mean UFC?", because Dana White and the Fertittas spent years working the company slowly to the household name it's become.
understood, but we are getting to a point where certain things have to be established to set the sport up for the future. It has to done in the mold established in boxing.Promoters are just that. The ufc who in theory are nothing but an organization that provides a belt just like Pancrase,Heroes,Cage rage or whatever. It's not for the ufc to dictate who's heavyweight is the best and in the position that they are in the average fan will believe anything they say. When Randy was in his prime he was loosing in japan to overeem, that doesn't make him less of a fighter but it explains that when he won the ufc title at HW he wasn't the best. Now iv'e interviewed randy and i don't think i have met a nicer more genuine person in my life and i have been a fan ever since,so i say what i say without bias.I think we all owe the UFC much credit for making mma what it is today, worldwide.I just think based on his past Dana White cannot be trusted to control this sport without bias.
Bruce Buffer saying "UFC Champion of the World" Ok that makes a difference if there is a fight between guys like Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca, those two aren't very well known fighters so if you say "He is the UFC Lightweight Champion..." Wow that's exciting but if you say "Sean Sherk, the UFC Lightweight Champion OF The World!" That build's more excitement for a fight because now your thinking "Wow I'm about to watch a World Title fight, this is awesome!" Complaining about that is pretty lame in my honest opinion, and then if you have a fight that's extremely anticipated such as Chuck Liddell vs. Randy Couture 3 then it just hypes the fight up even more, it's a pretty good announcing technique in my opinion and Buffer has the golden voice that can just get anyone excited for a main event title fight.
On Keith Jardine being a stepping stone, from my sig you can tell I'm probably Keith Jardine's biggest fan lol, he is far from a stepping stone he absolutely beat down the current #1 Contender to the UFC Light Heavyweight belt in Forrest Griffin, to the point where Forrest was crying because Jardine had bounced his head off the mat repeatedly, honestly one of the most vicious TKO's I've ever seen, after that though Jardine fought the unknown Houston Alexander and lost a huge upset in about two minutes, I'm gonna be the biased fan here and say Jardine was too overconfident in that fight I think, he was confident going in and then on his very first punch he drops him and then Houston starts to smash him, Jardine was climbing to his feet and stepping away but still had a knee or both knee's on the ground (can't remember) and Alexander knee'd him right in the mouth (in his fight with Alessio Sakara you find out how hard Alexander's knee's are), it's an illegal move which immediately following it he hit a punch on an already unconscious Jardine, following with a punch directly to the back of the head, two illegal moves one after the fight was over, Jardine's fight with Chuck wasn't a fight that Chuck was 'supposed' to win, it was a fight that saw two good fighters that had just been KO'd fight to see who started the climb back to the top, and Jardine did just what I thought he would and he kicked Chuck's ass.
Knocked out cold in two minutes of his previous fight doesn't sound like he was supposed to be a test for chuck, and i think the dean of mean would be the first to admit that.I was incredibly happy when he won by the way as i believe he is a decent fighter who works hard.
On the Dan Henderson subject, he was the PRIDE Middleweight and Welterweight Champion, PRIDE was the #2 Company in the world, of course when the UFC bought PRIDE and got Henderson they wanted to unify the belts that they could, the fastest they could because UFC vs. PRIDE = $$$. And it did UFC 75 became the most watched UFC event in history, the main event saw exactly what the UFC wanted to happen with there champion leaving with the W, of course if they could get him to drop to 185 they'd pit him against Anderson Silva, honestly who else was there? Rich Franklin, Nate Marquardt, Travis Lutter... they'd all been demolished by Silva and they had the dream fight right there, UFC vs. PRIDE Silva vs. Henderson... course they did it, Henderson had done enough to earn it in my opinion.
the fight was of course going to happen, but to give henderson the fight after a loss regardless of the weight is bizarre and unprecedented in most legitmate sports.
Pride #2 in the world!?!?!?!?!? that's a matter of opinion the two most dominant current ufc champion s are ex pride fighters rampage and silva.Pride's HW champion is arguably the best fighter on the planet so i guess you would have to be a UFC advocate to imply the UFC was #1.
Yeah the UFC was up there but being #1 is debatable. That being said numerous ex pride fighters have come to the UFC and have found it hard in the cage, but that changes nothing imo.
If we are fans of mma then we need different sanctioning bodies E.G wba,wbc and ibf (in boxing)and let them act as those alone which means they don't go around buying their fighters houses ,hooking them up with commercials and sponsors. That would be strictly for promoters anything else would be a conflict of interest. That is the only way to bring the sport forward. The UFC is getting bigger sponsors all the time and that's a beautiful thing for them, and will only make things better for mma on the whole but playing favorites is wrong and will lead only to the demise of the UFC.They need to worry about guy's like Garry Shaw at elite because he's been in the boxing game forever and he is basically taking is knowledge and connections into mma.Why do you think he can get cbs to cover events now, that's a massive jump from spiketv.
