I just got back from the event. Sick! Awesome night of fights! Only 2 decisions for the entire night and those two were no brainers. Lots of finishes.
A couple of thoughts stick out...
Maynard looked like he outweighed Edgar by 30 pounds. The difference was HUGE. Edgar is definitely the more technically sound of the two, but he just couldn't overcome the strength difference, though he nearly did pull off a neat reverse triangle looking thing that would've been sick.
Alves also looked noticeably bigger than Karo and Karo's spare tire looked even more noticeable live.
Got to meet Nick Diaz. Cool guy.
Matt Hamill has a granite chin. He ate a couple of knees that should've at least rocked him, but he never even looked fazed. His standup is still raw, but he's really improving in that area. The rape choke?! Bwahahaha!!!
Tommy Speer's standup is atrocious. If his standup doesn't improve drastically, he's not going to make it.
Josh Neer dominated Din Thomas. Those two guys showed a lot of respect for one another. Neer opened up a big cut under Thomas' eye and the fight was stopped to have the doctor take a look. You could tell both fighters were pumped that the fight wasn't stopped due to this. Thomas is a tough dude. He got his leg buckled early in the fight with a big leg kick and went down, but it didn't seem to affect him during the fight, but afterward he was limping badly. I wouldn't be surprised if he has some damage to that knee. Neer was gassing bad, but finished strong regardless. He admitted after the fight that he didn't feel good, but he didn't know if it was due to altitude, weight cut, or both.
Roman Mitichyan looked horrible. Just plain horrible. Sotiropilous didn't look much better as he had ample opportunity to finish that fight much earlier and failed to capitalize. I don't expect anything out of either of these guys.
Marcus Aurelio looked good. The way he was able to transition seemlessly into that armbar was nice. 16 seconds and it was over.
Alves looked really good against Karo. Did Karo know who he was?! Haha! Karo is a really good fighter, but he has to develop more finishing ability either striking or through submissions. It's hard to survive with some of these guys for 15 minutes and you're not always going to make it long enough to get the decision. You have to be able to finish fights.
Karo and Alexander both complained about the stoppages, but they were done.
Nate Diaz's jiu-jitsu is sick. Pellegrino is a black belt and was completely tooled by that triangle.
