Default GSP vs Anderson Silva possibilty?

Quote:
Both UFC president Dana White and St. Pierre after the match talked about Jon Fitch, a former wrestler from Purdue, as the next challenger. There was some talk by White and the press about a possible champion vs. champion match with Anderson Silva, the company’s middleweight champion. The consensus right now is they are the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the company, if not in the entire sport.

“Never say never, but I have a lot of training partners at 185 pounds,” St. Pierre said. “You can play baseball against your friends, but you can’t play UFC. I will never fight a friend. Maybe I’d do it for a super fight.”

Gsp vs Silva a possibilty? There's really no one left for Silva in the middleweight division and not anyone jumping at the bit in the 170 to challenge GSP.

They need these two to dominate their divisions for a number of title defenses before setting it up. Make these guys more iconic first. I mean, GSP was an on again, off again champ. Let him dominate and successfully defend his belt ala Hughes and Franklin and Iceman. Let Silva become even more of a savage in his division and he become even more scary. Let the water boil first I say.

I agree with ge master. I want to see this fight happen, but not just yet. Let them both dominate their respective divisions for a little while longer then they could set up the fight. It would be huge. As for GSP's next opponent, I think it should be Fitch.

I think there are a few fights that need to happen before either fighter jumps classes. GSP vs. Fitch should go down, and even though I don't think he can win GSP vs. Alves would be another. Dana likes it when a fighter cleans out a division and GSP hasn't quite done it yet. Silva on the other hand has few options left.

gsp vs fitch is an obvious possibility. after that fight maybe someone else comes up... silva has basically no one unless the UFC brings in lindland.. id love to see this matchup, ive been talking about it for years now!

I think if it was on the fight (which i dont think it would be) it would be CRAZY.... all types of kicks and strikes... but i think its more realistic that GSP takes down silva and REALLY tests his BJJ....

With that being said i still think its a pick'em fight

I would personally take GSP over silva. I think GSP has survived on the ground with better BJJ players then A Silva is and i think he is a good enough wrestler to get the takedown... However i think A Silva has good enough striking to end it with in seconds of being on the feet no matter what round or even after a ref stand up... I still give it to GSP though. I think A Silva would have a hard time setting up his combos when he has to keep worrying about the takedown coming in like GSP likes to do.

I agree w/ this assessment but I am not so sure that GSP would be able to finish Silva and if it is 5 rounds and Silva getting atleast 5 chances on his feet to KO GSP, I am not so sure GSP could keep from getting KOed. I can see GSP pulling out a decision against Silva but I am not so sure he could take the fight the distance against Silva.....

defend against who???

fitch obviously... then who? id like to hear who else is deserving that he wouldnt just walk over.... then if you allow scrubs to fight GSP, and one happens to win, then you have another serra\gsp situation all over again.. an average fighter at champ who has no chance to hold the belt

I think we all know what would happen if GSP fought Silva.

Silva would win the first one and GSP would probably win the second one.

Just check out GSP's theme song

Are you really saying that GSP shouldn't defend his belt against people he is better than in theory because he might lose and an "average" fighter might be champ? Perhaps GSP just shouldn't defend his belt after Fitch and the UFC could just make him the permanant belt holder forever since he would be better than everyone else on paper.

GSP doesn't deserve the unbeatable crown like Silva. Ge Master has a good point. What exactly has GSP proven? On paper, he is heads and tails above almost every fighter in the division. Then in his first title defense he loses to Serra whom almost everyone thought stood no chance. He needs probably 4 or 5 defenses before people should be talking about a fight with Silva. He has proven zero as a champion unlike Silva.

Fitch, Alves, Diego, and Davis are a few I wouldn't mind seeing fight GSP. You may say he would walk over them, but yet again he was supposed to walk over Serra the first time.

GSP is my favorite fighter but I agree, he has never successfully defended the belt which I think he can/will. I want to see him successfully defend the belt 3-5 times b/4 any super fight w/ Silva is made.....

no, im saying there is no one really worthwhile for him to face...
fitch yes, the rest of your list def not. at least not yet if you go by the UFCs history... alves had a nice win vs karo, (karo would have been a good choice if he won) but past that win, he doesnt have any huge wins.... davis would get CRUSHED by gsp... and easy takedown and an easy GnP win.... not even worth the time until davis fights TOP level talent and wins... maybe diego, but not for awhile... he has fought and beat top talent, but is coming back from a couple losses....

point being, theres not much out there right now for GSP... it may take some time to develop top talent.... so no, giving GSP easy fights for him to pad his record when theres a silva\gsp super fight out there isnt worth it to me as a fan

I think Hughes should try to get GSP's belt.

Just another way to hurt MMA and the UFC. As you can see in my Sig., I would love to see this match up, but it must be the fight of last resort, and should be at a catch weight. GSP must defend his title to almost an exhaustive extent so that the fight would be necessary. Otherwise, it is a slap in the face to every WW in the UFC. Not only Fitch, but Alves and possibly even Karo should get a shot. It must be determined that GSP is so dominant that there is no one in the WW division who even poses a threat. One cannot argue that that is true now, considering that he is yet to successfully defend a non-interim belt.

To be honest, I'd like to see a Bisping/Silva fight first.

Although I think Anderson would find a way to take it to the ground and Sub Bisping. Bisping really needs to work with a good BJJ guy.

I dont agree with most of you... i think if GSP gets past Fitch it is the perfect time to set up a super fight... There is no clear contender in either weight class right now after fitch... So pending GSP's win over fitch any number one contender declared for either belt is suspect... what better time to have a super fight. It is an exciting fight that has huge PPV sales written all over it. I dont think it is disrespectful to any WW or MW... i think it should be a non-title fight or atleast a fight for a one time only belt so it never has to be defended.
