Default Liddell Hurt, 85 Main Event OFF

Five Ounces of Pain | Report: Liddell injured; UFC 85 main event cancelled

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell has been taken off of the card for UFC 85 scheduled to take place in London on June 7, MMARated.com is reporting.

The UFC has yet to issue an official statement.

Liddell had been scheduled to fight Rashad Evans. Evans is also expected to be removed from the card with the bout against Liddell likely to be re-scheduled for later in the summer.

Liddell had originally been scheduled to fight Mauricio “Shogun” Rua on the card, but Evans was tapped as a replacement after Rua was forced to bow out after aggravating a knee injury.

There is no word if a replacement main event will be added to the UFC 85 lineup. A heavyweight title between Brandon Vera and Fabricio Werdum is currently the highest profile match that’s still scheduled.

According to the Wrestling Observer, the event, scheduled for the O2 Arena, has sold over 10,000 tickets, making it very unlikely that the event will be re-scheduled entirely.

It will be interesting to see if the show remains scheduled for pay-per-view, as drawing a strong buyrate could be difficult without a legitimate main event. UFC 85 will also be taking place just two weeks after UFC 84, which already an obstacle in regards to drawing a strong buyrate.

Heavyweight Title Fight?

Have I been sleeping or something, was this announced as an interim title fight?

If they don't replace this with a good main event hopefully it will be free on Spike. But either way this sucks.

THIS CARD IS SO STACKED WE FELT IT HAD TO BE SHOWN FOR FREE ON SPIKE TV!!!!!!!!

Seriously thou the only thing I can think of that can MAYBE be a co main with Werdum/Vera is Hendo/Lil Nog and that is VERY far fetched.

Any ideas?

Well this card as a whole didn't look too appealing even with Chuck on it, so now he is most probably out... what a bad card it looks to be, no wonder it hasn't sold out over here already, they really do need something, or at least maybe need to put the whole event off until the summer. The 10,000 can still have their tickets, and then it could be Liddell vs. Shogun, and at least that will keep it up nicely, I don't think they can let it continue without this main event.

June is in the summer. Chuck/Shogun was the original fight before Shogun got hurt nearly 6 weeks ago and is most likely going to be out until 2009. They arent going to scratch a card that has sold 10k tickets.

Does anyone read anymore?

Why not? I think thats in the UFC's best interest, otherwise they're losing out financially on this card, and its not the worst idea in the world to just move the card on a few months.

I dont think their losing out financially. Tickets are sold, and Spike must pay them something to put cards on TV. Its not like a card with a Vera/Werdum main event is gonna have a huge payout.

Terrible news. In my view, this was looking like a lacklustre PPV even with the Liddel - Evans fight... Without it, it's even worse. Werdum vs Vera as the main event? God help us all...
