Default How is your rubber guard?

I recently started using it all the time... I LOVE IT!

It works best on bigger guys for me as smaller guys can tend to create a bit of space and work out... Either way i love the rubber guard a ton.

I am able to tire people out with it and set up easy triangles... also love to through a gogo/logoplatta in when i can... cant seam to get the arm bar from it just yet but i will

war eddie bravo!

Wow, I was literally just going to make a post about this today...Weird...

I LOVE rubber gaurd...So easy to pull off my omoplatas from there (thats my fav. sub as well as the gogo)...Triangles were a weak point of mine (people would always find a way out) but with rubber gaurd I can set people up in them much easier...

In my BJJ class (nothing but BJJ) on monday and weds. when I roll..I use nothing but rubber gaurd from bottom and it keeps on improving week by week...Definetly something I am going to use in my next tournament in June...

George, do you compete in any tournaments? Or do you just train?

I like to use the rubber guard when my opponent is already a bit tired.
Also, I still need to work on my flexibility.

But I'm using Eddie's favorite sweeps all the time.
I pull half guard, get the lockdown and go for "old school" and if that doesn't work I can often roll the guy over and land in sidemount.

When I'm on bottom I'm usually just trying to get back standing or into a dominant position. I guess I'll have to focus more on subs from the bottom soon.

My guards suck period, but for some reason, I have an almost impassable half guard. For me, i just seem to control my guy better from half than Full guard.

I don't train in BJJ (not yet anyways) but in my opinion the rubber guard is such a great system and it is highly under rated. It does require some flexibility, and there is nothing preventing you from being flexible. Like most things it takes work to get there, and if your dedicated you can be just as flexible.

In Eddie's book MTRG, he gives an example of a guy going into a kickboxing school and coming to the realization that he can't kick anyone in head but he doesn't write the sport off. He doesn't think that the guys are genetic freaks, he just says to himself "Man if I want to kick someone in the head, I've got to stretch." In BJJ, when some people see the Rubber Guard in action they think, you have to be born flexible to pull of those kind of moves.

For those that haven't, I highly suggest picking up Eddies book Mastering the Rubber Guard. It really is a great read. Anyways here is a cool video of Eddie Bravo in action, and showing some Advanced rubber guard techniques that one of his students came up with called the Double Bagger.

ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

George, do you compete in any tournaments? Or do you just train?
i have never competed in a BJJ tournament outside of inhouse ones. I am constantly being used on my fight team for all weight classes though as head BJJ training partner for upcoming MMA matches and if i do compete in a BJJ tournament i am going to be in a weird spot being as i am a catch wrestler and we dont have an easy system to rank like belts... so if i go against white belts its completely unfair and i will hurt someone... but if i got against purple belts it might be a little to advanced... not sure. I currently have wins over multipul blue belts... I know if i compete on that level i may win the tournament or lose but not get embarrassed but competing with purple belts is definitely more of a challenge and something i would really train for. I use to wrestle and competed in lots of wrestling tournaments so i am not worried about having multipul fights. My fear is getting frustrated. In wrestling someone takes a step backwards they lose a point in BJJ people run from me... I tend to pull guard a lot and i dont need to lose a boring match because i am on bottom and i couldnt get the takedown because they ran from me. I would just get pissed. Thats why i like MMA... its very hard to get away from my double leg when i kicked you in the leg a few times and put a jab in your face first.
