After seeing Franklin escape from that armbar by Lutter (which looked like a sure thing), I don't doubt his belt.

The last time Chuck was submitted was in his first fight against Jeremy Horn over a decade ago.

I realize neither guy wins often by submission, but half of JJ is defense. Both are rarely submitted. They both like to stand and bang. I'd love to see both branch out and diversify their fighting styles.

Of course not, I'd just like to see both guys use their JJ abilities offensively. Both guys are too content to stand and bang even when things aren't going their way. Franklin got destroyed twice standing with Silva. After the first fight, wouldn't you think that when things started going bad on the feet in the 2cd fight, Rich would do everything in his power to get the fight to the mat? In Chuck's decision loss to Jardine, he was getting outpointed, but his unwavering confidence in his instant KO power made him keep banging. I'd just like to see both guys use their grappling abilities to become more well rounded fighters.

I beelive that W Silva got his new trainer(7 times BJJ champ) to live in his house for a reason I think he is training to use BJJ more offencivly the he used to.
Specialy now that he can use elbowes. In the past Silva have used it more for defence. When facing guys like Arona he have been able to survive on hte ground wich is not easy. It shows that he got a lot of BJJ skills.

To get a belt in fight sports should be more looked like a study where you show up to read and learn over many years. To have a black belt does not mean the same as you might submitt anyone/kick any ones a**es.

All fighters in MMA train to not get submittet, that makes it hard very hard to pull it of.

excellent post Crazy

Linville Rich's style is effective he doesnt usually have any reason to take the fight to the ground. that doesnt mean he isnt well rounded maybe it means his opponents should have better takedowns. We all know that everytime rich gets to the ground he sweeps and/or always improves his position...why do you feel like he has to lay on his back and play guard with his opponent if thats not what he feels comfortable doing? thats a dangerous mode of thinking and you know this because you sited the fact that he chose to bang with Silva...what if he chose to play guard with lutter or even mcdonald?

thatd be silly, keep the fight where your comfortable, well-roundedness is only an insurance for the unexpected situations you have to have the skills but you dont have to use them

and i think most everyone in the big time organizations has paid their dues

this is totally against the ethos of bjj. other martial arts may make you take written exams to test your knowledge before you can belt. or you may have to have trained for a certain length of time before you get a particular belt. bjj is completey about practicality. its about not only learning a lot, but also your ability to execute those actions well in competitive situations

Hehe, I did not mean "sitting down and writing" like that.
It was a picture of the learning progress in martial arts, you will get better over a long time of learning.
