Vera: "I won the round"... Werdum: "No rematch"
Some Vera-tidbits from the post fight press conference:
(they're on ufc.com)
Quote:
Got a lot to say about that fight… That ref sucks. I’m kinda disappointed in Fabricio. He said “yes” earlier in the cage right after. At least that’s what I thought… he shook his head “yeah, we can do it again”. Now he’s telling me to get back in queue. I understand why he doesn’t wanna fight me again. I hope you win that title, Fabricio. ‘Cause I’m really looking forward to fighting you again.
I dont agree with that stoppage, and yeah, I'm pissed.
My last… I fought with a broken hand after the first 30 seconds. All 3 rounds, no complaints.
I was getting punched in the face man, c’mon. He hit me 3 or 4 times, the rest was on my arms. Fabricio had a awesome-ass mount, I wasn’t getting out of the mount. I figured I was just gonna have to ride out the asswhoopping for the next 20 seconds, get up to our feet the second round, and I was gonna give it to him. If I would have finished the fight when he was rocked the first time, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. So, I guess I can take partial blame.
Even with the mount and him punching me at the end, I think that I was winning the round. I off-balanced him, clinched, I was elbowing him, stand-up was beautiful, I stopped the takedown, I went back to full guard, I was elbowing from the guard ummm… [unintelligible] went to the ground twice.
I won the round, I was happy. I didn’t even start kicking yet. So, I was just ready to start turning it up another notch in the second round. Fabricio is an awesome fighter, he’s ranked 5 or 6 in the world for a reason. So, I wanted to feel him out a little bit in the first round, start getting into it in the second. First round went way better than I myself, or any of the coaches would have expected. Ummm, I was excited to continue the fight. Didn’t happen.

I used to like him in the beginning, but Vera is definitely starting to annoy me now.
First the highly publicized dispute with his former management. He came out of that mess looking like a dick (that can't spell).
Excuses after Sylvia and now this... yes, most people agree it was a bad stoppage, but you did not win that ****ing round, give me a break. That "if I would have finished him"-line was BS too. Werdum was not that rocked, buddy. Wah wah wah.
Did somebody order humble pie?

Maybe after another loss or two in the HW division he might consider droppin to LHW. I like Vera ok, I think he can give alot of big guys problems with his striking alone. He lost to a better man. I don't like the fact that he crys when things don't go his way. Lets see how he bounces back from this.

The people who wanted him to win thought it was a bad call. The people who did'nt thought it was a good call.
And the people who did'nt care one way, or the other, still dont.
Eitherway the outcome would have been the same no matter what. He was out classed, so get over it Vera.
With all the attention MMA is getting right now with the critics, the ref would have to of been an idiot to let him smash his face in for another 20 seconds.
The speed Werdum was at would have been approx. 40 more unanswered punches. WTF

Vera really needs to get off of his high horse that he keeps on riding! He has lost two in a row, and instead of admitting the better fighter won that night he is coming up with excuses. Real classy Mr. Vera!

The thing that stands out to me is this is the second fight in a row he has broken his hand. Me thinks this may be a career long problem.

You misunderstood the quote.
He was talking about the Sylvia-fight there.

He was referring to the Sylvia fight when he spoke about his broken hand. Im pretty sure he didnt break it (again) in the Werdum fight.

Werdum is a bad guy and Vera saying that he was winning a round where he got full mounted... Reality check anyone?
Vera should have watched more UFC and realized that, if someone has fully mounted you and is pouring punches on your head for a while and the only thing you do is cover it with no intention of getting out of the mount, THEY STOP THE DAMN FIGHT. Vera, there is no ridding off that way for 20 seconds.

If Werdum gave him a rematch this quick, it would be like him saying the ref stoppage was unjust. Broken hand, only 20 seconds left, I just lost my dog, my cup was too tight.

Yeah, Vera whines too much. I still like him though.
He hit the nail on the head when he said he shouldve finished Werdum when he rocked him with the left, and that he should get partial blame for it. Actually Vera, no, you should get complete blame for it.
I know you're Muay Thai oriented, but you really landed a good left hook that almost dropped Werdum. Then what did you do? You clinched him? A man 20 lbs heavier than you? You shouldve kept it with the hands bro. You had him. if you simply had just exploded and opened up on Werdum? We wouldnt be having this discussion and you'd have a nice KO/TKO on your record vs a very solid MMA fighter.
I like you Brandon. But just go out there and fight. You have the tools!

Vera is admitting he had no way to get out from under Werdum's mount without waiting the round out. Um...thats not defending yourself, its not trying to advance your position. Thats giving up for 20 seconds. What would Vera done had Werdum mounted him earlier? Wait out two or three minutes? You can't curl up in a ball anymore and not expect the ref not to step in. All previous incidents aside, the ref made a decent call in this fight.

You can't blame Werdum for not wanting a rematch. It won't do anything for his career. I like Vera a lot but he needs to take a loss like a warrior and come back stronger.

Not much else to say, i agree with the consensus. He had a bunch of people on his side until he started crying, which seems to be the story of his life the past couple of years. He doesn't have the dedication he needs to and is relying on natural ability and potential. And he hasn't lost decisively enough to get that through to his big ego. Imo the best thing that could happen to Vera is to get KTFO in his next fight. Then he has to face his worst enemy, himself.

This loss and Vera's whiny reaction to it are probably the worst things for his career. If he had lost a 3-round decision, he may have heard the fat lady singing and moved down to LHW. But, now he has a big(ger) chip on his shoulder and he'll continue to stay in the HW division...which by the way is so thin, why would you want to stay in it?? Right now the UFC HW belt has an asterisk attached to it: HW Champion* (*of a crappy division).
Vera, swallow your pride, move to LHW and dominate some top guys.

I'd like to see Vera fight Gonzaga next.
Both guys last lost was to Werdum.
It would make for one helluva match.
If Vera wins convincingly, then he'll have started to lay a foundation to build a claim for a rematch.
The point is probably moot because I don't see Vera beating GG.

The UFC tends to do that. Machida beat Nakamura and Soukoju and them two squared off right after.
That said GG is huge compared to Vera in size. I think GG might be the one to send Vera packing to the LHW division. It be a hell of a fight until GG closes the gap. Gonzaga sub rd 1!

Vera was never as great as people wanted to believe he was in the first place. Prior to Sylvia he had beaten the worst Mir ever and an Assuerio Silva way on his way down.
Now, I am not to say he's not good. He just isn't great. He is too small for a HW and cannot always count on ko'ing people. He should seriously consider dropping to LHW.
