UFC Best of 2005
First off, my hat goes off to the people who run UFC.Com. They have really done a better job since the site was redone.
Second, sorry if this has been posted already, but I didn't see it anywhere. On New Year's Eve, Spike is airing a "UFC Best of 2005" show at 9pm Eastern Time. I guess it's just going to give a year in review for the UFC.
2005 was definitely a big year for the world of MMA, the UFC in particular. I just wanted to give everyone the heads up, so be sure to watch it or record it. I know I'll probably TiVo it at least.
And while I'm here, we might as well do a little picking ourselves, so here goes:
1. Who Was the Best Figher in the UFC in 2005? (pound-for-pound)
2. Who Had The Biggest Breakthrough in 2005?
3. Who Was the Biggest Disappointment in 2005?
4. What Was the Best Event in 2005?
5. What Was the Best Overall Fight of 2005?
6. What Was Your Favorite Fight of 2005?

**I guess I might as well do mine.
1. Who Was the Best Figher in the UFC in 2005? (pound-for-pound)
**Matt Hughes
2. Who Had The Biggest Breakthrough in 2005?
**Rich Franklin- Wins over Ken Shamrock, Evan Tanner, and Nate Quarry mixed with being a coach on TUF2 put Franklin right at the top of the MMA World.
3. Who Was the Biggest Disappointment in 2005?
**Frank Trigg- It's tough to put him here because he lost to two great WWs in Hughes an GSP, but he was completely dominated in his fight with GSP. I do agree with jonny though about the HW division in general.
4. What Was the Best Event in 2005?
**The Ultimate Fighter 2 Finale- This entire event had me on the edge of my seat....and it was FREE! Plus, I wasn't watching yet when UFC52 took place.
5. What Was the Best Overall Fight of 2005?
**Nick Diaz vs. Diego Sanchez- If you didn't like this fight, you are crazy! These two put on a classic mat war that far outdid the Griffin/Bonnar fight IMO.
6. What Was Your Favorite Fight of 2005?
**Rich Franklin vs. Evan Tanner- Rich is my favorite, and this is the fight where he won the title. It was about four rounds of brutality for Tanner, and I enjoyed every second of it. Tanner is a tough S.O.B. as well. Great fight.

First off, agreed on the kudos to all the folks at Zuffa and the UFC. Great Great strides made this year in the popularity and exposure of the sport.
Having said that, my picks:
1. Without a doubt, the best fighter pound for pound in the UFC is "Twinkle Toes" Trigg. Who else could carve up a turkey, feast on some sweet potato, and get his head bashed in and throat choked out in one year, and yet still be universally loved by one and all? "Twinkle Toes" for President, baby!
2. Jason Thacker. Clearly demonstrated why he should be packing bags at the supermarket check out line.
3. Rich Franklin. Disappointed fans universally by knocking the stuffing out of Nate Quarry. Heck, any one of us could have hit Quarry harder had we had an 18 wheeler running 70 mph.
4. Ok seriously folks, I really enjoyed UFN2 (TUF2 finale). The matches were all very compelling and competitive.
5. Clearly the best fight of '05 was Thacker vs. Leben. Revenge was never so cruelly and brutally denied.
6. Favorite fight '05 was Diaz / Sanchez, but not for reasons you might expect. I am always in the Diaz camp but really enjoyed seeing him face a really tough test. He didn't win, but he still has my admiration as a terrifically skilled fighter. I wish I could find an opponent 'Twinkle Toes' could beat (beyond the holiday bird).
Happy Holidays folks, I hope I don't have to tell (some of) you that portions of this were in jest.
