the Bruce Lee thread!!!
everyone loves Bruce. how can you not? he is essentially the man who created MMA without even knowing it. so i thought it'd be nice if he had his own thread where people can say what they think about him. such as how he would do against people who exist and fight today. or how his techniques and training methods influence you and the way you see fights. i personally love Bruce. i am very fond of his no BS way of seeing fighting. he has is simplified so that it is functional not necessarily pretty. would Bruce support MMA events like UFC and Pride or would he ignore them much as he did the point based competitions that existed while he was alive? to me Bruce is an innovator and although tremendously talented would find himself having to work harder to compete against fighters like Chuck Liddell or Randy. what he created people have taken and improved. a great man.

Bruce was awsome, I have one of his Jeet Kun Do books.....His style is by far the best I've seen and he didn't have the ego that would keep him from fixing it when need, If only UFC and PRIDE were around in his day.
Jet Lie is probably the closest thing to Bruce in are day but he still fights in a box so I think Bruce would beat him easy.

Lee broke the mold by stating what was seen at the time as blasphemy; wushu as an artform is beautiful, but as a fighting style is lacking in some ways. He made quite a few enemies by forsaking the traditions of the time, but years later almost everyone cross-trains. Without Lee starting the revolution, we might be where we are today, but nowhere near as advanced.

Bruce Lee definately was the first to realize the limitations of devoting yourself to one style and later on, to any style. even with Jeet Kune Do he early on refers to it as a style and later on no longer refers to it as a style. Bruce was not afraid to evolve based on what he determined worked or did'nt.
Bruce Lee vs. Jet Li? bruce hands down on that one. Jet Li is skilled no doubt but Bruce was better. i think today if Bruce was around and through some magic was still 33 he would easily dominate within in his weight class and maybe one class up. he only weighed 135lbs. so to say he could beat a highly skilled 200+lb. fighter like a Chuck or Randy is debatable.

even with the realistic aspect of modern MMA i have doubts that Bruce would have competed in any events. you may have seen him train fighters but Bruce was always concerned with rules when it came to fighting. turning combat into a 'sport' was not something Bruce enjoyed. one of Bruce's favorite techniques was the finger jab and the only place to use that strike is into the eye.

True. Bruce wasn't a compitition fighter, he was more of a street fighter. He didn't believe in rules in a fight.
Either way, if Bruce were in MMA now, he would be a the 23 time world light wieght champ. Lol.

If someone finger jabbed me in the eye, I would just have to shoot them. No rules right? If someone got in a fight with someone that faught that dirty, the only way to win is to fight even dirtier.

Exaxctly!!!!! that is exactly what Bruce would expect in a street fight. of course after he finger jabbed you and you flinched he'd knock you out cold with an uppercut or hook. maybe just choke you out.

Then I later when I recover I would shoot him, there just is no escaping! He would have to kill me for me not to put a few in his knee caps.

i am quite certain that a punch from Bruce would likely kill you. if it did'nt kill you its likely you'd be eating all of your food out of a blender for the rest of your life.

Bruce punches about 50 times harder than Rich Franklin does. i think if you count the punch that knocks you out you would block exactly one of Bruce's punches before hitting the ground.

When it comes to Bruce Lee or Jet Li or other film stars we have to divorce our view of them in film from our view of what is practical and real in the very real world. Bruce would be very quick to point out the differences... check out the documentary on him called Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey (2000) (V). There is some great archive footage of Bruce explaining his philosophy and his views as well as explaining JKD and MA in general. His wife tells the story (which she personally witnessed) of his famous underground fight to win the rights to teach any MA style he desires as well as the supposedly forbidden Chinese MA. It is a VERY different telling than what we saw in the Jason Scott Lee film Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993). Bruce Lee also did not stop at MA without weapons... his MMA involved weapons of many various types, which included the now famous nunchuckas.

Today on AMC they will be showing the Bruce Lee documentary I mentioned above (Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey) at 4:15 PM EST. It is a great documentary, and worth a look for anyone that is interested...

if you're really serious about learning what Bruce Lee believed there is no substitute for books. there are actually a few books Bruce wrote himself along with dozens of other books created from Bruce's own notes and journals. there are also a number of books that tell the history of Bruce's life. just avoid anything that has to do with that movie "Dragon" that is mentioned above. that movie is just that, a movie and does'nt tell the truth.
