weight\knee trouble advice???
you guys always give very precise advice so i was curious if anyone had an opinion on the following...
i am 5'11 190lbs, usually do a pretty heavy lifting program, but lighter on the legs cause i have bad knees. lately one knee has been sore all the time for over a month. my doctor gave me a cortizone shot and told me to stay off it for awhile... knowing me that usually doesnt work but i havent lifted with legs for awhile... besides dropping weight (which has been advised even though i dotn want to or think i need to, are there any programs for legs that are very low stress but will at least help them keep in line with the rest of me?? i feel like i lose a lot of explosion from boxing not being able to use them as much as id like to... :sport-smi :sport-smi :sport-smi :sport-smi

having knee troubles when you love athletic sports like boxing and MMA is a real downer. i have trouble in my left knee from of all things...Bowling. i have some techical errors in my slide that i need to address. anyway, i have read a bit about heavy lifting not being a neccesity for explosiveness. It does help obviously. however there are other ways to build explosive strength in the legs using short sprints. in boxing alot of your power comes from your calves not your quads so just knowing that you could focus on things like jumping using just your calves. knee injuries are quite often career ending for athletes so perhaps you might consider physical therapy.

O knee problems, I feel your pain, it really takes a bite out of your confidence and training! Im gettin surgery on mine in a month, but ill only be out for about a month(or maybe less because im tough ) Icing them nightly has helped me alot, and chilling in my spa also helps.
Put your feet togethers standing straight up, bend your knees (not to much, just enough so you feel pressure on either your knee of quads). Now, with your weigt on your knees move your knees together in a circle for 15-20secounds, then switch directions. I do that after track 2 or 3 times then go ice. It was recomended to me by an ahtletic trainer, so if you want give it a go...its some crazy yoga or something.

In your weight work outs, lift less weight with higher reps. Avoid leg extension exercises, deep/heavy squats, deep/heavy leg pressess, jumper squats, any lifting with jumps or plyometrics with jumps. If you want to lift heavier weights do deadlifts. They're considerably less strenous on the knees and pretty much work the whole back side of your body in addition to all of your legs. Hindu Squats are also good. They use your body weight. They do go deep into squatting, but you can always go more shallow on your squat. They are very good for long, lean leg musculature. You might try Glucosamine-Chondroitin also or Knox Nutra-Joint. This stuff gives your body the building blocks it needs for cartilage/joint health. It's also a good idea to ice down your knees after a good workout too.

Your knee can repair its self. For this to happen, you need to get rid of your vitamin deficiencies. First of all you need magnesium which will help with the pain its self. I take 300mg every day (30 minutes before I go to bed, in addition it is a great sleep aid with out grogginess). Next you need loads of vitamin C. To produce cartilage or collagen you need a lot of vitamin C. You body can fix problems in two ways. Either it can repair the injury with "scar tissue", or with actual cartilage. To make this happen you really need to take at least 3000mg of C a day for 3 months. Then 1000mg every day after that. I take 5000mg+ every day. (You can not overdose on vitamin C).
"Why didn't the doctor tell me this?” How do doctors make their money???

i am pretty sure that you can OD on vitamin C. i know the body can only process so much through digestion. when taken directly into the blood by an iv you can process alot more. however too much Vitamin C will make you sick. there is alot of controversy over Vitamin C as of late, with some people making claims that with an iv you can absorb up to and over 100000units( i am sorry that i cannot recall if its mg or IU.) per day. supposedly that much C is supposed to work miracles.

I beleive he was speaking or oral injestion of C, and you'll simply pass the excess out in your urine.

ever eat about a dozen oranges? too much Vitamin C in your system can make you have gastrointestinal problems. yes it is water soluble and you're not going to die from it, but having the squirts is'nt going to help your training.

Not to mention it can give your skin an orangish tint. Who wants that? Not me, for sure. I think if you stay under the 10000mg/day you'll be a'ight.

You guys are funny, the citric acid is what gives you the squirts (and no I've never eaten that many oranges). Orangish tint from Vit C? LOL, hilarious.

not sure who's post you're questioning here is a link to a site that is all about Vitamin C. while there is no mention of turning into an orange Hulk there is mention of Vitamin C causing gastrointestinal disruption when taken in high doses. http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocente...mins/vitaminC/
scroll down a ways to the "safety" portion of the page and see for yourself.

Ah, my bad...I got it mixed up with carrots. The extreme amounts of Riboflavin cause you to go orange, if you take in too many carrots...not vit. C...sorry, my bad.

Yeah, now that's a fact. Anyone seen those "Safe Tanning Pills"? They are simply the "ingredient" of carrots that make them orange. If you take enough of them your lower layers of skin turn orange. Some people have a base tan that means they could make you look more tan, but fair people just look orange! How strange to see.
