Yeah, I thought it was good fight and a good night of fights. I need to be more specific sometimes. Penn gave a poor performance compared with what we have seen from him in the past and what we all know that he is capable of in a performance. And, performance is an odd word here. Most may be thinking that fighters fight -- they do not perform. I think that MMA fighters are very worried about performance (showmanship) in a fight. They want to win or lose based on a great performance.

Look at Stephan Bonnar, for example. He lost to Forrest Griffin for the TUF1 Finale. And yet... He gained a great deal (besides the money) from that loss. He fought and performed at a high level. It is hard NOT to respect Bonnar and that specific performance. By comparison, I thought that Penn looked good for 1:30 of the first round, and then fizzled effectively. He still fought, but I was not impressed by the performance. GSP had to overcome an eye poke. He did not perform well either, but what he had to go through made him look a lot more impressive.

And, just to let you know where I stand... I do NOT believe that Penn poked GSP in the eye on purpose. I fully believe that it was an accident. I would even go so far as to say that Penn's performance suffered because he was angry at himself for allowing such an accident to taint the fight. I think that Penn wanted a great fight against a great fighter under fully fair and even circumstances. I think that he was upset that people might say that he won by a dishonest poke to the eye...
