Gurgel says opponent at UFN is...
Mark Hominick! Wowza talk about a tough debut. Obviously Hominick is no joke and Gurgel has a good tough fight on his hands especially coming off of reconstructive surgery.
The Ultimate Fighter season two veteran Jorge Gurgel confirmed to Sherdog.com Tuesday that he will make his Octagon debut against hard-hitting Canadian Mark Hominick at Ultimate Fight Night 5 on June 28.
In his last pro bout, the Middletown, Ohio lightweight saw his hand raised in victory against Jason Ireland in February of last year at KOTC's "Payback."
"I was impressed with Hominick's game against Yves Edwards at UFC 58," Gurgel told Sherdog.com. "I look forward to testing his stand-up. I've never taken anybody down in a fight. Once we exchange I'll be in familiar territory, and that will confuse him."
When asked about returning from reconstructive knee surgery, the Marcus Aurelio awarded BJJ black belt said, "I feel great man … it's been 10 months since I had the surgery and will be almost a full year by fight night. I'll be ready."
UFN 5, scheduled on a Wednesday for the first time, follows the TUF season three finale, to be held on Saturday, June 24.

Damn that sounds like it will be one hell of a fight. I think Hominick will take this fight.

Woo-hoo! I cant wait. It is gonna be a banger. Mark is a helluva fighter, but my boy Jorge (hehe Boy George ) isnt gonna fold like Yves did. No liver kicks for Mark in this one...

This will be a great fight. When I've been talking about who should round out the 155 division, I hadn't even thought of Gurgel. Awesome! I think Yves should fight the winner, and we'll be well on our way to a LW champ.

I was pretty impressed with Mark Hominicks fight against Yves but I think that Jorge is going to take the win in this one.

Nice! That is a very tough fight! I think it will be a battle! I would rather see this fight in UFC 60, than the Guillard fight! Anyway should be sweet! Any other news on the UFN card?

Another excellent reason to bring the LWs back. Has anyone seen/heard anything about the plan for a LW champion?

Nothing confirmed, but the division is shaping up nicely. Edwards, Hominick, Sherk, Gurgel, Florian, Fisher, Stout, Guillard, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch of guys. As I said before, I think if the division gets hot and they crown a champion, you're going to see some 170 lb'ers drop down.

Sherk has mentioned something about it with his new contract. If he gets a couple wins he will be fighting for a LW belt.

So then I wonder if he's the unofficial #1 contender. With Yves losing, really only Hominick and KenFlo could stake a claim to that spot. Although, they really need to find a way to bring Ludwig back. You would think after his last UFC fight, they would be all over him. I know he has commitments to another organization, but find a way!

I hope that they do a tournament. Even if it is not a one-night tournament. They could stretch it out over a few PPVs and/or UFNs on Spike TV.
I really liked Hominick's win over Edwards. And, I like Gurgel. This is just going to be a great match -- I can feel it already. I would love to see Hominick beat Gurgel (sorry, but I like Hominick more), and then fight KenFlo. If they don't do a tournament, then they could have Hominick fight all the LWs. If he beats them all, then give him the title, LOL.
Wait, I forgot Sherk... Damn, now I have to rethink that, LOL.
If they went strictly by who has the most UFC wins out of all of the LWs, then that would make Edwards (with the most experience and wins, IIRC) the uncrowned champion, right? If they simply awarded Edwards with the title, and match him against Sherk as a first defense, would that upset people? I mean, Gurgel, Hominick, and KenFlo are each good fighters, but they are all so new to the UFC that it almost seems unfair to give them a title shot.

If they simply give someone the title then it looses all of it's value and the holder looks like a chump. I think they need a bunch more LW fights over the next few PPVs and UFNs and then have the top guys go at it in a one night all LW tournement, that would be fantastic, and the winner would clearly be the undisputed LW champ

Smashingmachine, I seem to be agreeing with you a lot today.
I like Gurgel, but I think Hominck is going to beat him down.

Gurgel isn't going to get submitted though. As much of a banger as he is, all 9 of his wins are subs. He's got a nasty, quick guillotine too.
I think I'm too much of a Gurgel fan to make a non-biased prediction but I think Gurgel's intensity will keep Hominick back and that Jorge has a better ground game as well. Of course I'm biased toward Gurgel and really haven't seen enough of Mark to really him as a fighter either so who knows.

Who here has seen Jorge fighting at 155 with a healthy ACL? I have and he is a beast. You can't judge him from his bout in TUF. He fought a weight division up and had no knee at all.
Gurgel via submission.

I am fairly certain that the Gurgel-Ireland fight early in 2005 was at 155 with a healthy ACL. It might be that fight that injured his ACL. I will say this, THAT was a good fight. I thought for sure that Gurgel was going to try to finish it standing, but he submitted Jason Ireland with a guillotine -- the fourth guillotine submission win in a row for Gurgel. He has four guillotine wins, three armbar wins, a choke, and a submission due to strikes. Gurgel's one loss was a submission by heel hook.
I think that Rich Franklin hangs around with Gurgel professionally for a good reason. The Ace was there for the Gurgel-Ireland KOTC match in Gurgel's corner. IIRC, legend has it that Franklin has been to all of Gurgel's matches, and Gurgel is always in Franklin's corner. I bet the Ace is in Gurgel's corner for the Gurgel-Hominick fight. That is a huge boost for morale. Also, it helps to have a champion shouting in the advice as a cornerman.

To have a healthy ACL you should probably have an ACL first...he'll get sanded either way.

I know this is an old topic but i am new. I was at Jorges gym the week after Rich fought David and watched Jorge train the guy is an animal he kills himself everyday training.
IMO if it wasnt for the bum knee he would have cleaned house in the ultimate fighter 2. Look for big things from him he is a super nice guy as well.
Rich also came in that day it was after his surgery and he was banged up but in great spirits. I also heard from someone that they heard on the news here in cincinnati that rich was gonna retire from the UFC i totally dissmissed this because it never came out of Riches mouth but I was wondering if anyone else has heard this?
