Default The Super Bowl of Mixed Martial Arts...

Mike Goldberg has called the UFC “The Super Bowl of Mixed Martial Arts” on numerous occasions. (Numerous is being a bit gentle, I suppose.) Anyway, do you think the UFC will ever hold a Super Bowl caliber event? Obviously if the current rate of growth continues it would seem inevitable.

Shamrock Gracie 3 might be a good match for an event like this. What are your thoughts?

It seems that most people here don't think to much of Shamrock. I am guessing that you are an old time UFC fan since you are wanting a fight like that.

I don't know if there will ever be an event equivalent to the Super Bowl. You're talking about nearly everyone in America watching and nearly everyone else talking about it leading up to it, every sports journalist doing stories on it and all the sports channels running coverage 24/7. There's nothing that is even close to Super Bowl caliber and may not ever be.

There are a few different categories of the type you are talking about. There are some who don't like him because he some of the dumbest quotes that have ever been spoken in the history of MMA. New fans who don't like him because they think he's a bad TUF coach, and some who just think he should have retired years ago.

I fall into the latter category. I've always been a fan but I don't like seeing him get beatdown and don't want to see him get injured.

I would like to see a Shamrock/Gracie III though. As much as I would say I don't want it to happen I can't lie and say I wouldn't watch it.

I fall into the same catergory as you. I feel the EXACT same way about Shamrock.

As for the super bowl caliber, Do you think the Tyson fights were close to it at all. I think some fights in the UFC might get as big as Tyson fights someday if it keeps getting popular.

Shamrock was very talented in his day but in my opinion that day has passed. Couture knew when to say when (Even though in my opinion he is still better then Shamrock is now) and Shamrock needs to do the same. I do have to give him props for being in it this long though.

I think there very well could be an event at the Super Bowl caliber...but to pull it off, it would have to be a true "super bowl" of MMA, not jsut the ufc. you would have to have the top champs and contenders from all the different organizations. PFC, UFC, and the numerous smaller organizations around the globe. Could you imagine the number of tickets they would sell if they had an event with Franklin, Wandi Silva, Liddell, AA / Sylvia, Rampage, Gomi, Pulver, Hughes, GSP, Fedor, Cro Cop and a few others? You would have people from all around the world coming to see that. The Gracie / Frank shamrock brought tons of people from japan to see that one and it was nothing compared to what an event like that would be. It could be dont but will it....probably not.

Yeah but even still it wouldn't be on par with the super bowl. All the "Mom" organizations out there right now and people who think MMA is barbaric wouldn't watch just cause Liddel was taken on Rampage again.

I guess some of us have a different idea of what it means to be "Super Bowl caliber." I'm talking like number of people watching which is almost everyone in America people who don't even care about football but watch anyway, and it's free, the seats are outraegously expensive, etc. People sit around and wait thinking about the next Super Bowl after the current one is over. No sports event is ever going to compare to that.

Even if there was an event that had Arlovski vs. Fedor, Liddell vs. Silva, Franklin vs. Henderson and so on, it wouldn't be that big of a deal to anyone besides the fans.

Why not Randy/Chuck IV for Mixed Martial Arts Bowl I? I'm soooo clever sometimes.
