MMA weekly's new top 10
I pretty much agree with everything except for some of the Lightweights.
I would of liked to see some other fighters in the Lightweight top 10.

I am guessing you haven't seen him fighting in Pride yet by that comment. Phil hardly "stinks" I don't have a problem with him being 10th at all.
thecreewarrior, how can you argue the LW's? Those are the best LW's in the world. Hardly any that I can think of even come close to them.

Well your right. I was just suprised that some of the UFC LW's weren't receiving any votes at all. Fighters like Hominick who defeated Yves Edwards. But I guess the UFC lightweights really haven't fought any big names yet. I'm sure Sherk will be in top 10 once he moves down to Lightweight to fight the winner of Kenflo-Stout fight.

Right. The thing is Pride has had their LW division established for a while now and they have the best LW's going at eachother. Just because some of the UFC LW's aren't in the top 10 yet doesn't mean they aren't any good. Like you said they just really haven't been able to establish themselves yet.
Besides Hominick did just get choked unconscious recently which is causing some people to think his win was a fluke. I don't think so myself but I know some will. Sherk will definitely be in the top 10 soon and so will Fisher once he can have a normal fight. He took a fight on less that 72 hours notice while on vacation, not training, and lost a very close split, then his last opponent was short notice. I have no doubts he is going to be an awesome LW though.

I believe the UFC has to get Melvin Guillard some more fights and also bigger name people to fight. He looked extremely impresive at 155 and I think he'll make some noise in that division.:sport-smi

I was surprised that AA was still ahead of Tim after Tim beat him.

The people that do the voting for MMA weekly are whacked right out of their skulls, man. I see problems in all of their weight class top tens. AA better than Sylvia after Tim KO'd AA? Tito Ortiz ranked number seven when he has not fought anyone outside of Griffin in like nearly a year? How the hell does Matt Lindland get number three? And, I like Trigg now, but he has not earned a top ten spot with all the losses he has had in the last year or so -- seriously, he is 1-3 in the last two years AND he has retired. How do they still rate him?
No wonder, here is the list of Pollsters:
Voters include:
Fighters (some vote every month, others vote every other month)--- BJ Penn, Dan Henderson, David Loiseau, Dennis Hallman, Din Thomas, Duane Ludwig, Evan Tanner, Frank Trigg, Jeff Curran, Josh Barnett, Matt Lindland, Nathan Marquardt, Pete Spratt, Phil Baroni, Sean Sherk, Steve Berger, and Yves Edwards
Broadcasters--- Erik Apple (King of the Cage), Randy Harris (WTAN Sports), Jeff Osborne (Hook N Shoot & Shooto), Ryan Bennett (IFC, K-1, WEC, Rumble on the Rock), and Monte Cox (Extreme Challenge) Sorry, but I have no respect for MMA Weekly top ten ratings. They have no science or sensibility behind them...

Yeah I can see how you would think professional fighters and the guys in the media don't know what they are talking about.
Besides sub. You know that top 10's and polls are meaningless they are fun to discuss though. Also why wouldn't Lindland be #3? The only reason he isn't higher is because he can't fight the champs regardless of how good he is. And a lot of people think Tim's win was a fluke and that Andrei is the better fighter.

Isn't it funny that the guys that voted all appear on the top ten lists?
THAT is pure BS at its finest.

Results are results for a reason. No fighter is good when he gets beat. AA lost. Look, I love AA as much as you guys. I placed him at number two below Fedor while AA held the UFC HW title. But, come on guys, AA lost. Live with that for a while. Tim Sylvia is now the number two MMA heavyweight in the world. That is all there is to that. He has the gold to prove it. The only reason that he is not number one is that Fedor has been a champion for a longer period with more title defenses. And, I simply do not think Sylvia or AA has any chance of defeating Fedor.

I was surprised to see Baroni only tenth on the list I believe he is top 5. I believe when he is on top of his game he can beat Horn, Marquedt, and Louiseau. I believe that Franklin is the top dog at 185. The Penn vote was a joke, someone is in serious denial. I am surprised to see Edwards still up there and nobody else from the UFC up there, but can't wait untill the UFC gets the LW's going again.
These list are hard to make becaus fighting is all about matchups, like I still believe that Tito would beat Silva. Because he could controll the tempo of the fight and Silva's wreckless style leaves him open for takedowns.

I donīt see how you can put Tim Sylvia at number #2 in the world. I donīt even see how you had AA as #2.

I rank number one and number two in any weight class by who holds the world title for that class. Of course, the UFC and PRIDE FC are the two top promotions. So, the title holders are how I rate them. Fedor and Sylvia hold the two most important titles in the HW world of MMA.
IMO, no one else even gets considered outside of the title holders for the all-important #1 and #2 positions. As a matter of fact, the top five could all easily be title holders from the big two and the smaller promotions.
After that, IMO, it comes down to win-loss records and quality of opponents. NOT some ridiculous popularity voting contest where the voters can vote themselves into a top ten position.

Well, I donīt necessarily agree with the MMA Ratings myself, for example I donīt understand why Kharitonov is still rated so high, but if you speak of win-loss records and quality of opponents, then Sylvia or AA are way behind CroCop and Big Nog. Tell you the truth, I think Barnett would take out Sylvia and AA if he was in the UFC.

Yeah, I can agree that AA and Sylvia are not the best, but the gold belt is the top of the ladder or king of the hill, IMO. For my own part, AA fell to like five or six by losing to Tim Sylvia. I definately would put Nog and Cro Cop ahead of AA now that he lost his belt.
Winning percentage is a good way to rate them. But, then a system of rating the opponents would be needed. Then a sophisticated mathematical formula would be needed to figure in all the variables. It gets very complicated. I think that MMA weekly would rather just leave it to a popularity contest as a cheaper substitute.

I think itīs very difficult to make ratings in MMA, just like it is in Boxing. Every organization has their top dogs. I, for myself, rate fighters based upon what I have seen from them in the past years, their opponents, the way the fought, the way they lost, who they fought, speed, power, ability, etc..etc. And I also agree, polls are not a true method of determining, who is the best fighters are.

Yeah, see... the variables begin to mount up quickly, LOL. I wish that PRIDE FC and the UFC would just maintain their own top ten ratings at their websites. I have not been to the PFC website in a long time, maybe they added it in, maybe not. It would help MMA fans to see how the promotions rate their fighters.
