Fighter rankings: top 10 / devision.
I just got this from MMAweekly and its pretty interesting to see where some of the names are on the list. They have Sylvia behind Barnet in the heavyweight devision. What surprised me more was the rankings of the lightweights. As stacked as the UFC's lightweights are, not one appeared on the list...

Top Fighter Standings has a more complete system. Instead of just taking the opinions of some writers, we also include computer ratings and fan votes. Check it out.

The lists seem fairly accurate except for the LW division.

MMA Weekly ratings were formerly voted on by MMA broadcasters and fighters. Now they're only voted on by MMA staff, 10 people at most according to their contacts list. That's too small a group AFAIC, and too liable to group-think since they all work together. This is not good news.

All that and you end up with something like this:
1 Liddell, Chuck 8.983
2 Ortiz, Tito 7.74
3 Griffin, Forrest 6.797
4 Sobral, Renato 6.764
5 Bonnar, Stephan 5.195
6 Evans, Rashad 4.608
7 Lambert, Jason 4.406
8 Bisping, Michael 3.188
9 Jardine, Keith 2.93
10 Couture, Randy 2.923
Griffin above Sobral?
Bonnar above Lambert and Evans?
Couture at #10???????????
Man, that is too funny. That's what happens when you have a vote button on your page. Yikes, what a mess!

Sorry guys, the rankings were still be updated. Bonnar has dropped to 7th now. Fan voting resets after every PPV, so right now guys can jump up easily. As more people vote the rankings will average themselves out. Most importantly if you think a guy should be higher or lower, then vote that way. There is no limit to how many times you can vote a day!

So popularity determines how good a fighter is?

The system has a lot of check and balances. So even if you voted for Luke Cummo a million times he would never be ahead of Matt Hughes. However, you could vote Keith Jardine above Michael Bisping or vice versa. Unfortunately popularity does effect a fighter's ranking. UFC is largely dependent upon the fans and what they want to see, so we tried to take that into account.

And you disagree?
My opinion on LHW's:
1.-3. Wanderlei,Liddell,Shogun (in no particular order, impossible to say)
4. Arona
5. Lil Nog
and so on...

I guess I take a different view of rankings. AFAIC rankings should try to eliminate bias in the subjective part and weigh heavily on the objective part (who beat whom). Fans are way too biased and they mess up whatever polls they're allowed to vote in. Allowing some idiot to sit at the keyboard and vote his favourites for three hours would seem to compound the problem.

I don't think Barnett being ahead of Silvia is off base at all. What I think is off base is that AA is 6th...I think he should be more in the 8-10 spots. I think they're smoking crack too when they put Dan Hendersen at #4 in the MW division...lol.

Henderson dropped in the rankings because he lost a fight saturday night. had he won, he would have been 2nd or 1st. After the half-hearted performance, I'd say he deserves to drop a few points.

Agreed on all those points. But they are just people taking part in a poll. And obviously there's a lot of people voting who don't know about PRIDE Bushido, since Franklin and Silva are top 2.

No No, I dont think that Sylvia deserves to be higher on that list at all. I was saying that its interesting to see a list where he is where he belongs. What I did think was off base was the LW ranks. Where is Pulver? Where is Franca? Where is Sherk? I just think that devision was off by a good bit.
