Bas Rutten's fighting stance
for anyone who has Bas's Big DVD's of Combat, what do you think of his take on the fighting stance? where he stands almost square to his opponent as opposed to the traditional boxer stance. no jabs for him, just right and left straights. i think offensively it offers alot of advantages but you lose some ability to defend. thoughts?

On one of his video's I watched he said that for a square stance like that, if the other fighter throws a straight, its easier to dodge it by leaning back and then countering with a straight? I like it though, seems like a wrestler would be less willing to go into someone for a takedown if they have a left and a right straight, rather then a left jab and right hook.

i just watched some of Vitor Belfort's old fights and in his fight with Wanderlei he really squares off against Silva and levels him with about 15 straight rights and lefts in about 6 seconds. Vitor really has some great boxing skills but in that flurry he did exactly what Bas talks about, which is to hell with the jab and throw straights for power.

I don't like to square off with my opponent, it is hard to defend front kicks. You also open your body to a powerful cross( they really hurt). I guess I am just used to boxing and Muay Thai.

My only input on this is that my first boxing coach advocated really turning your stance so you can reach further with your jab, you get more tork with your bomb, and you're presenting less of a target with your body. But when I switched gyms and started working with a guy who had decades more experience and had trained fighters in all weight classes to championships at the amateur and pro levels, one of the first thing he did was turn my stance back around substantially so I was squarer to my oponent.
Like you guys are saying, it allows you to connect with your right (assuming that's your bomb) with less need to set it up. You might be sacrificing some KO power, but you're going to hit him a lot more times, and in amateur boxing, that wins fights.
I also found that it really improved my balance as I moved around the ring, and it was easier to stay centered while I threw combos.

i don't think you lose any KO power by having a more open and square stance. No. let me rephrase, you still have enough KO power with an open stance but you have more offensive capability. in a classic boxing stance you won't be knocking anyone out with a jab but square off and you can turn that jab into a straight punch with KO ability. i was training with a friend and he asked about KO power and i compared it to a car crash. you can get killed just as easily hitting a tree at 60 as you can doing 120mph. certainly you'll be a dead at 120, but you spend alot more time going 60. you don't have to throw a punch your hardest to get a KO.

Bas also said that stance is so that he can check the leg kicks. You can't check leg kicks properly by being in a boxing stance.

Bas Rutten's stance also allows you to better defend a takedown.

Agreed, and this is where I have zero experience so I'll be quiet. My only training has been a lot of boxing and a little BJJ -- no kicks whatsoever, and for takedowns, there's been no striking involved.
