Default Eye Poke? You Decide

For those that haven't seen the fight between Hughes vs Penn II there was an unintentional eye poke during the first round. The question I ask is whether or not you think it was truly an eye poke or a punch to the eye that had Hughes stunned.

Here's the gif of it;

The more and more I look at it, the more I see Penn's hand and not the thumb connecting with Hughes eye. If that's the case, what are the rules regarding a punch to the eye? Would a fighter get some time to recover or would he be SOL?

It looked more like he hit him in the eye bone under the eye. And Hughes didn't seem to make that big a deal of it. His eye didnt really swell up or anything.

Belforts EYE TEAR of Couture that one time.

Now that was an eye poke!

With the open hand gloves I am actually amazed that it doesent happen more often. I usually don't buy that fighters do it on purpose. I mean in the ring, you're so amped up with adrenaline you probably don't even realize you have your hand open while swinging to sometimes have eye pokes.

Well it bought Hughes a bit of time to recover.
I think it was, actually a bit of a poke, but Hughes exaggerated it to get some time.
Others would've done the same in his situation.

Why are people surprised that accidental eye pokes happen? BJ isn't even looking at Hughes when he throws the punch. It was a wild overhand left and it was the knuckle that hit him in the eye and as it was stated already Hughes didn't seem bothered that much by it. And a punch to the eye is perfectly legal. So is eye gouging if you are Vera or Chuck.

BJ tore\strained his ribs sometime late in the 2nd round that is why he looked gassed, check out his interview on MMAWeekly. He is not using it as a crutch either.

After he lands the punch, he kinda drags the thumb over his eye. I don't know, Hughes grabs his eye right after the punch. you can only take his word for it.

Who cares? There is no way to prove it. I mean Brandon Vera did a Three Stooges-like eye poke to Silva without getting even a point taken away. He wasn't even throwing a punch like BJ was, just stuck his arm straight out with his fingers extended into Silva's face. Did he do it on purpose? Sure looked like it to me. He says he didn't so you have to leave it at that. And the bottom line is just like Randy did with Chuck, he gave the okay to continue the fight.

The more I watch it, the more it looks like he did it on purpose. It really looks like he went in thumb first. Doesn't really matter, it had no real effect in the fight, the ref stopped it let Matt recover.

i dont think this was an eye poke i said it fight night and i'll say it agian. i think it was the midknuckle that hit Matt. either way it really had no effect on the outcome of the fight since Big Jon stepped in quickly. had he not though i think Penn would have looked to take Matt down. that woulda been super sweet

Yep. If anything it helped Matt more than anything. He gets punched in the eye and realizes that hurts like a mofo. So even if it wasn't an illegal strike I sure would be acting like it to get time to recover. The ref always goes with the one who gets hit when it comes to eye pokes. You can fake those all day.

So penn may use under-handed tactics like eye-pokes on purpose, and he still can't win his matches? Kinda lame.
