Sylvia wearing belt at UFC 63
63 was a pretty good card, BJ looked really good for the first two rounds and injury or not tired in the 3rd (those who have separated ribs can attest they will really take it out of you), but total prop's to Matt for toughing out what looked like a really deep triangle along with the arm bar and coming out with the win. Little Evil getting dropped was a surprise, but the man showed amazing composure and respect to Joe Lauzon afterwards, and Rashid Evans showed more energy and skill than in any of his past matches.
The strange thing (and I respect Tim Sylvia as a very skilled fighter, not bashing him at all but confused and startled) was Tim Sylvia wearing his championship belt to the bout. He was simply a spectator as far as the coverage showed, but I've never seen a spectator in any sport wear their belt except into the ring for a title defense.
Anybody have any info on what other promo/event or team psych-up might have been going on to explain wearing the belt?

He did pose for a lot of fan pictures. Maybe Sylvia was just doing promotional work for the title. It's his belt, though, so I guess he is allowed to wear it where he likes... I think it was for the fan photo ops.

Nothing strange about it. If *I* was a UFC champion, i'd wear my belt at UFC events too.

Now don't get me wrong, I know what you guys are saying, nothing wrong with being proud of being THE WORLD F-ING HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION, but honestly I've never seen anyone, in any sport, wear a title belt outside of the ring (and I have seen a champion or two at the movie theater... well OK in the gym and out at the bars, but sort of the same thing...).

The photo-op with the fans does give a pretty simple and likely explanation, and that is giving something back to the fight community which is respectable. Hadn't thought about that one.

this thread is pointless
the man is the champ, he can wear the belt where he wants until he loses it
how the hell is it cocky to be proud to be the UFC champion? hes worked hard to get that title whether you like him or not, he paid his dues, and trains like a champion daily, lives a respectable life and is an honorable guy
he can wear his belt, and we should all be proud to have him as a champ

i think it was a support act for hughes also, if we look at it, we have Pulver the uncrowned LW champ (although he got beat at 63, he never actually lostthe belt in a title match), Hughes WW champ, Franklin ( although not officially Miltech fighter i belive) MW champ, and Tim HW champall out of the same camp. plus pat wasnt there so i belive it was about a show of support and also reinforcing who is the man

There's no extra reasoning behind it. Tim wears the belt everywhere he goes. After he won it, he went to a ballgame wearing it. When he attends UFC events and is just sitting in the audience, he wears the belt. You could say they're... attached, and it would be an understatement.

I don't like Sylvia, but I can't moan about him wearing the belt.
Tito wore his belt everywhere too, and Rampage's "when I go to **** yo mama, I'ma be wearing the PRIDE-belt... whatever I do, I'ma do it with the PRIDE-belt"-quotes obviously mean, that wearing a championship-belt anywhere is 100% acceptable.

It does seem to point to a certain lack of self-esteem or bragging, I'm not sure which (they often go together). Wearing the belt casually is an unusual thing to do, and not something I would expect from Hughes, Franklin or Liddell.
I wonder if he had the belt loops on all his pants enlarged?

But we're not talking about him being seen at bars&stuff with the belt on, it was a UFC event where he was seen wearing the belt.
And at UFC events, theres nothing wrong with that at all.

Agreed! The man has worked DAMN HARD to get where he is, and has earned the right to where that belt. ESPECIALLY at UFC events.

I've heard interviews with MFS fighters saying that Tim even wears that belt to Church. He wears it all the time cause he's just proud of it. I mean it may look kinda corny, I mean to wear it all the time, but he's proud of that accomplishment, so I say.. who cares?
Once Tito had a fighter in the Octagon and Tito wore his belt backwards and some dude in the crowd asked Tito why he wears the belt backwards and Tito goes "Cause if you want my belt, you have to kiss my ass first!"..
I thought that was classic

*Referee asks for the belt at start of match, but lethalweapon wants to keep it on. In the middle of the first round his opponent connects with a front kick to the belt/stomach*
Lethalweapon: *Cough* ugghhhh ok take the belt...*cough*

Are you all kidding me?
Ok, Tim is a big mean guy and all that, but wearing the belt for the event was kinda weak in my opinion. I guess if he thought that at 6'10 he might not be recognized :P whenever the cameras even go on anyone in an event they like put their name underneath them and tell you if they are the champ or not. If I ever become the MW champ (one day) and you all see me wearin tha belt around public, feel free to kick me in tha junk repeatedly for havin an enormous ego. Also I am kinda wonderin how much credibility this will bring to the sport. I did not think it was a classy move at all. Did anyone ever see Chuck or Randy wear their belt not to a fight? I can't remember if they did but I don't think so.
