ring vs. cage?

the whole stop the fight and re-position in the centre of the ring is reason enough to choose the octagon, the one and only thing that makes the ring better is that there are loads of them so trailer park boys can put on there own Ultimate trailer champ events

i think that the cage / octagon is better for mma. there are good points on both sides of the discussion but i just think it is better in the cage. the stoppages in pride (or any ring fight), dont really take away from the fights to me because when i watch a pride event i know that is the way it goes in the ring. just like you prepare for an opponent, you mentally prepare for watching a fight (even if it is sub-consious (sp?)). so i like both arenas, just prefer the cage a little more.

Well.. i guess I don´t even care.. Ring or Cage.. don´t matter as long as the fighters are there to fight.

my opinion of ring vs. cage is based solely on the rules that allow the ropes to be used to escape submissions. i just heard that in Pancrase if you can grab the ropes your opponent has to let go of his submission. the same goes for Pride, if you can get under the ropes the chances are good that you might either get a standup or a restart in the middle of the ring in the same position. the cage is a real, solid barrier. you can use it to you advantage or it can be used against you. in a real fight there is always 2 opponents you face. one is the person you are fighting, the other is the enviroment in which you fight. you have to know them both as best you can.

I like the Cage better.....The ropes give to much and I think they are a bit of a risk since a fighter can fall out of the ring.

of course the cage can break as well. i saw it happen in King of the Cage. or if your Tank Abbott you might just try to throw your opponent out of the cage. i think it all comes down to how far you want to see MMA removed from reality. in a reality based encounter you're never ever going to fight someone where ropes are the boundary. a chain link fence or wall on the other hand is a real possibilty. you'll never hear a guy who got jumped in an alley say that the only way he got out safetly was to slide under the ropes. of course it is a sport now.

I read it as well and I thought it was a great article. I would have to agree. I think switching to a ring would make the UFC more appealing to those people who normally wouldn't watch. The ring is globally accepted in this day and age of combat sports.

I don't think that the ring or cage determines the outcome in a fight. You take your choice of ring or cage and I'll take the better fighter. I will win 99% of the time. In the end, it's a matter of what will best help the sport to grow.

i had just not really considered the idea that if UFC was in a ring it might be more accepted by the public or casual fight watcher.

Personally, I like the fights in the cage better. There is something that a cage brings to the whole atmosphere of the fight a ring just can't do. I do like how PRIDE restarts in the center of the ring. I think you can beat the argument of the ring being accepted for sports too. I associate a ring with boxing. This is MMA not boxing. I think the cage helps distinguish it from boxing. I think there have been good points on both sides of the argument. They each have their pros and cons. For me though, I like the cage better for the individuality purposes of it all.

They could compromise, LOL. Like in TNA pro-wrestling, they could have an octagon ring -- an eight sided ring with ropes. But, they need to make the fighting area big enough so that the fight does not end up in the ropes all the time. I noticed that in a few PRIDE fights that I watched. The fighters seemed unable to avoid the ropes. Also, a cage can be brutal if you get grinded against it, which is my only reservation. They could switch to unbreakable plexi-glass with rounded corners, which would be fairly slippery against a sweaty fighter. As for keeping fighters from using the ropes to break hold, they could always take away points from he judges score cards every time a fighter resorts to that tactic...

having watched alot of Pride lately i think that when there is a good ref the ropes pose almost no disruption in the match. however if the ref is an idiot it can be a problem. i almost want to believe that the action in Pride is faster since it is'nt a cage. in the cage when a guy gets pinned against it there is'nt a stand-up or relocation to the middle of the ring like in Pride. its almost a given that you're going to see a GnP attack when a guy is pinned against the cage. yeah, i have to change my view and say that the ring offers more action. however how about this, why don't they go to a Sumo style ring. obviously it'd have to be wider but you could still use the circular boundary line, just have a larger neutral/safety zone around the line. purposely running out of the "fight zone" would lead to a warning. other rule changes could and would follow. i think it could work.

I hate the ring, mpw if they made the ring a bit bigger ok. But the fights always end up being moved to the center. That is a huge advantage for the fighter on the bottom. I prefer the cage any day of the week.

I like the cage as well. The ring gives ringside people a better view, and I guess more venues to fight, but having to hold the fighters in the ring and constant restarts takes away from the action, IMO. Also, you cant beat pinning some fool in the corner of the cage and pounding away!

If you tried that in a ring, your opponent could just go under the ropes and get a restart.
However, in Pride, you are allowed to stomp and soccer kick a downed opponent, so not being able to pin an opponents head into the cage and kick away (unless youre Wes Sims

) is just saftey first.

After watching last night's UFC Live event, I have to say that I really prefer the ring over the cage. The reason why was Josh Koschek's win.

Jeff Joslin (who is obviously a more skilled fighter) has at leas 4 or 5 sweeps in round one stuffed due to being pushed up against the fence. A couple of times Josh was prevented from being rolled over becaus the fence simply stopped it. As we could all see Joslins stand was far superior and so was his grappling - near triangle choke. IF this fight was in a ring, I think the out would be different.

Take a look at Pride, incredible wrestlers like Coleman and Randleman are hard pressed to get a win. They don't have the advantage of charging a guy into the fence and throwing punches or elbows.

Now I admit there is something exciting about the cage, but honestly, there is far more skill displayed in the ring, far more. You have to rely on more then just strength and cardio, though they are important.

By the way, I am not a big Jeff Joslin fan. Actually that was the first fight I saw of him, although I have heard of him in the grappling circuit.

i personaly hate the ring... i like the cage much much better... i am a gound fighter though. For me i would personally like to remove all aspects of other fighting sports. I do not like corners... I like circular cages much much better then square rings.... octagon cages or those smaller 6 sided cages.... round and taller is the way for me!
