BLOOMFIELD, NJ (May 8, 2007) – Floyd Mayweather, Jr doesn’t want to battle a UFC champion. No problem. IBF World Welterweight Champion and former high school/college wrestling star Kermit Cintron would like to accept the challenge from UFC President Dana White, it was announced today by Main Events CEO Kathy Duva. Cintron, who will be defending his IBF crown against mandatory challenger Walter Matthysse on July 14 in Atlantic City, NJ, would like to battle the UFC champion following his June IBF title defense.
“I want the fight,” said Cintron. “I can wrestle. I can box. I can beat those UFC fighters at their own game. Tell Mr. White to make me an offer and I’ll take on his guy after I fight Matthysse on July 14.”
Cintron (27-1, 25 KO’s) captured the vacant IBF crown on October 28, 2006, when he destroyed Mark Suarez in six rounds (TKO 6). The 27-year-old Reading, PA resident by way of Carolinas, Puerto Rico once finished 10th at the NJCAA Wrestling Championships. As a senior in high school he was offered full wrestling scholarships to Wisconsin University and Ohio State University.
The Cintron-Matthysse bout will serve as the co-feature to the Arturo Gatti-Alfonso Gomez contest. Main Events is promoting the July 14 evening of boxing, in association with The Tournament of Contenders, LLC and Caesars Atlantic City.

Being a great wrestler and a great boxer is a FOUNDATION for being a great mixed martial artist. It doesn't mean you're ready to walk into the octagon against the world's best MMA fighters. If this actually happens, this guy will be destroyed.

Boxer Wants To Take Sherk Up On Fight Offer
Unfortunately that boxer is not Floyd Mayweather.
MMANews broke this story that boxer Kermit Cintron would like to take Dana White and Sean Sherk up on their offer to fight in the octagon. While my first response was a laughing, eyebrow-raising "Who?", I completely understand that boxing fans have probably said the same thing about Sean Sherk.
For those of you who do not know, Cintron is the IBF WW title holder.
Here's a quote from Cintron:
Quote:
“I want the fight,” said Cintron. “I can wrestle. I can box. I can beat those UFC fighters at their own game. Tell Mr. White to make me an offer and I’ll take on his guy after I fight Matthysse on June 30.”
I just wonder if he realized that Dana won't pay him the $2+ Million that he offered Mayweather.
Actually, I doubt Dana would even accept this offer. Kermit Cintron is a no-name (my opinion, but I consider myself to have above average boxing knowledge) and likely is doing this to increase his own visibility. I doubt the UFC would sell any more PPVs due to boxing fans considering Kermit Cintron's challenge to the UFC as a "must see".

Dana is good at educating potential customers as to who unknown fighter are to make more PPV sales.. I'm sure he could make a decent amount of money from this, yet not as much as a fight with PBF.

Cintron has 27 wins, 25 of them by way of KO, only has one loss to Margarito, who is also considered one of the best fighters in the world at Welterweight. Cintron is also trained by Emanuel Stewart. I think he would be a good representative for boxing, but it wouldn´t draw any attention, since nobody (except a few) know who he is. UNLESS, the Boxing media hypes this fight up, just as much as the UFC would. Honestly, if Cintron thinks he can take on Sherk, then let him have a shot.

i don't think he will get the title shot right away(if he is brought in) maybe a few warm ups first to prove himself. I think the title offer was only to mayweather.

Hopefully Dana will give him a decent offer and we see Sherk take him down.

The IBF title holder? HAHAH. Ironic that it was a former IBF champion that competed in like UFC 3 and got his ass submitted I think by Royce Gracie.
Remember that guy? The one who came into the Octagon with one boxing glove? Then got his ass slammed and I think arm-barred if memory serves. Lemme try to find a YOuTube on that

that a huge step from a Boxer to a MMA artist. If sherk takes him down, with out a doubt Sherk will win. Or do we know less about this guy, what if he has been training for a long time now, i mean i don't know this guy, but if he wants to fight sherk then he must have something up his sleeves

Well, he didn´t TAKE that belt from an IBF champ, it was vacant and he fought for it. We all know Sherk will take him to school, but I would want to see it. Heck, why not?

Which IBF Champ competed in UFC 3? I think you mean Art Jimmerson, who got submitted by Royce in UFC 1, but Art was never IBF champ, and he´s not the best boxer either. 18 losses.

for some reason, i think that this fight would be considerably different from mayweather based on recognizability and what not. furthermore, i fear thta this type of "gimmick fight" might make the ufc look more like the wwe's "gimmick" fights like bam bam (rip) vs L.T. back in the day.
anyway, my 2 cents, but i would add: what if sherk takes the fight and loses?

I couldve sworn in one of the first couple of UFCs they said former IBF or IBC or something champ. It was the dude that came in wearing one boxing glove.
Totally a retarded fight which put to rest (at least in the early to mid 90s) the argument of boxer vs grappler

If this were to happen people would just see a boxer versus a UFC fighter. When in reality Citron is the exception when it comes to boxers. he seems to have a very strong wrestling background, which is uncommon amongst boxing's elite. in my opinion it wouldn't be a mix martial artist verse a pure boxer. It wouldn't serve any purpose in putting the controversy to rest if citron were to win

I would like to see that boxer fight Sherk...It might be a bout that might interest boxing fans to see also....It isn't that big of a fight than PBF fighting in the octagon but none the less it is a fighter who is an IBF champion from boxing so if this fight occurs I would order it just to see how this boxer does in the octagon.
