Is the Golden Age of MMA over or.....
has it just begun? Now that there seems to be a changing of the guard with the longterm UFC champs all losing their belts and Pride being bought by Zuffa and no longer the threat to the UFC it once was, was that the end of the Golden Age of MMA? Or is the fact that now most of the elite Pride fighters coming to the UFC and the UFC/Pride superbowl looming on the horizon giving everyone the dream matchups we want to see the dawn of the Golden Age?
I'm leaning toward the dawn of the Golden Age. Yeah, I consider the beginning of the UFC the stone age.

That we won't know for many years. Who's to say what happens in the next decade or two. There might be fighters that come out that make us look at Chuck and Fedor and think, "I can't believe these guys were the best to offer back then." MMA has changed so much in 15 years. Who's to say that will stop. Back in '93 styles were totally separate from each other and today it's all about finding the right mix to suit the fighter.

I agree.
MMA is getting a lot of coverage in the mainstream now and the sport is getting legitimacy. I think that's the most important part.
MMA is blowing up.
The UFC/PRIDE merger comes second, but it's great to see all the top fighters fighting each other.
Some people might have a problem with losing soccer kicks and stomps in the big shows, and point to that why this is not the "Golden age", but it's not a big deal to me.
A lot of smaller shows will allow those things, and if by unifying the rules they can have the top fighters fight each other, I'm all for it.

yeah its too early to be talking Golden Age. If you do that then you have to say the golden age was when Gracie was MR. MMA

I am not sure and am stuck on the fence. On one side you have the fact that now all the best fighters are under one roof and so dream match-ups that were once just fairytales are now reality.
On the other side you have the WWE effect. I watch the WWE, it is not nearly as good as MMA but worth watching... sometimes. My point is that once WWF bought out WCW it ruined all competition. If the pro-wrestling fans wanted to see pro-wrestling they had to watch WWF (soon to be WWE). This meant WWE could relax and fprget about putting out a great show everynight. WWE has been on a steep slide since it lost it's competition. Although this is unlikely in the fairly young world of MMA it could very well still happen.
Thinking about it, I would lean slightly towards the Golden Age is Now side

I was about to post the same thing with the WWE-WCW comparison. the wars they had in the mid to late 90's made for great wrestling! You didn't know what was going to happen every week. Now the storylines are SO stale!
But it might be different with MMA in the fact that the great fights that we wanted to happen , can now happen thanks to UFC buying Pride. I never thought Cro Cop would be in the UFC or Machida for that matter! and it's happened!
I believe we are on the DAWN of the golden age where just about any fight the fans want to see, will happen! It's already started!
