NHB v MMA?
Ok we know several people on this forum who back NHB against MMA, I cannot say MMA includes NHB because the 2 are so different
I for one cannot see it working apart from outside of a drunken fight in a pub / club
I trained for a while in muay thai (well a mad version of)
And for me there is no contest
NHB is more about people who brawl (IMO)
I fought a "big" NHB fighter he threw 5 or 6 punches, 2 landed stomach, yawn, I hit him with a knuckle strike to the sternum and an elbow to the throat... it was over.
The like of cabbage (not taking anything away from him I understand he has some skills but there was a time he just slugged it out) and old bikers (cannot remember his name) fighting in UFC / MMA are IMO over
And calling "back yard fighting" NHB is BS anyway
Any other views?

MMA is simply the evolution of NHB. No Holds Barred implies there are no illegal techniques. It lacked the professionalism the sport required if it was going to make it in the mainstream. NHB also was'nt the correct term since MMA is full of rules restricting certain moves and targets. I don't see NHB being a term to describe fighters like Tank Abbott and Cabbage. Its just an outdated term that has been replaced by something that better describes the sport. MMA is better for everyone.

NHB or Vale Tudo as it's known in Brazil, is what MMA has evolved from. NHB stands for "No Holds Barred", which basicly means, "No Rules".
As a fighting purist I prefer the old NHB format over the new "unified rules", which I feel restricts certain fighters from really reaching there full potential. NHB was basicly a real fight in a controlled enviornment, in real fights people headbutt, stomp, knee on the ground and strike to the groin. MMA is great but NHB is better. I would love to see today's more skilled fighters compete under NHB rules, because I think that would be off the charts excitement.
Unfortunetly the price we pay for the sport going mainstream is that they had to conform to a more socially acceptable set of rules.
I am NHB to the core and always will!!!!

Really, no holds barred? So you can kick em in the jewels, fish hook, eye gauge an opponent? Have you done this or witness that in a NHB fight? I like they idea of fighting clean. And really what are you saying, that nhb is superior to mma, cause the similaritys of greater than the differences. Sorry for all the questions.

essentially yes, these were all legal moves, except for eye gouging. Often the fighters would make gentlemans agreements before the tourny's and agree not to pull hair or strike to the groin, but this was not always the case. I have watched many Vale Tudo tourney's in Brazil, IVC and WVC mainly, some of the great MMA fighters of today got thier start fighting in NHB, Chuck Lidell, Wandy, Igor V, Mark Kerr, Anderson Silva, Mark Coleman. Heck, the early UFC's were NHB. I have also competed in some unsabctioned underground fights that were under NHB rules. I definetly prefer NHB>MMA.

Not sure what to think of it really. Thanks for the links Tony the hardcore NHB man. I'll check it out and let you know what I think. Funny I never heard of the term nhb before.

I just watched the Chuck v. Pele vid. 32 minutes of clumsy, gassed-out GnP that went to a decision. You're not exactly making the case that oldschool Vale Tudo fights were more exciting.

I was more or less showing examples of using illegal moves and no wieght limits, also showing a huge MMA star that fought in Vale Tudo before he made it big. Chuck Liddell is arguably the biggest name in MMA today. Not so much as using that fight as an exaqmple of a great fight, although I do really enjoy that fight.
You have to take into account that, that was one of Chucks early fights and he was facing a very dangerouse striker in Pele Landi, who had way more expieriance than Chuck at the time

there are reasons for all the more modern rules of MMA. Basically it came down to two things, fighter safety and making the fights more exciting. Sure the early UFC's or IVC in Brazil have thier appeal but the guys on top of the sport today are far superior fighters under the unified rules. I can't say i would ever want to see the sport return to its roots. The guys today have better skills and better conditioning with the bonus of having longer careers.
