is 5'9" short for a fighter?
hey guys,
I know this is a wacky thread question , but would you guys say that Matt hughes , BJ Penn , Melvin Guillard , jorge gurgel , who are all 5'9" or 175cm , short?
I know theres no ideal height for a fighter , but would you guys say that they are short?

Matt Hughes is statistically the greatest welterweight of all time and BJ Penn ain't too shabby either. I'd venture to say it doesn't matter too much if ya find the right weight class.
That being said I'm 5'9" and I feel short.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the average height for an adult male in the United States is:
* 69.2 inches, or
* 5 feet 9.2 inches
Average Height for a Man Statistics
And as for BJ Penn, he has two victories at MW.

This is going to probably get me flamed, but that figure is diluted by some of the larger minority populations in the US. White and Black men in America average about 5'10".

I fight at 155 and and I'm only 5'8. It depends on your weight class. If I fought at 170 or 185 I would have problems but because it weight class is low its okay. It just depends on your weightclass. But then again Monson is about an inch taller than me and he is a heavyweight.

haha yeah , and Mark hunt , Kevin Randleman, both 5'9" and 5'10" fight in heavyweight.
I think it depends more on your build aswell , like Fedor emelianenko is 6foot which is probably on the short side for a heavyweight , but his build very solid , walks around at 105kg plus , BJ Penn can flip through weight classes easily, hes got a bigger build then most of the guys at LW and WW.

Mac Danzig is 5'8
Joe Stevensen is like 2'8
Lots of short fighters in MMA that do well.

you're only too short if your opponents taller then you and you don't possess the skills to deal with the height advantage he has. Look at Kenny Florian. he's a tall lightweight and a decent fighter but Sean Sherk pushed him all over the Octagon that night. Height does'nt determine who's the better fighter.

Being compact (read-short), while compromising your reach, opens up some interesting advantages as well. If you can dodge and weave your way inside to a taller, more "reachy" opponent, your shorter limbs put you in a great position of dominance. Your center of gravity is lower, meaning you are harder to take down and are able to execute takedowns easier. It's also hard to submit someone with powerful, stocky limbs and no neck Matt Serra's only 5'6", and he's a nightmare to roll with! It's all how you use your body type. You have to implement a course of action that plays into your natural strengths, and keep the other guy out of his.
