its actually quite eerie in the early Pride events. there is no action in the ring and the crowd is dead silent, not a peep.

It's true that while I'm a fan of a lot of Pride fighters and I've enjoyed a bunch of their events, the atmosphere is weird. It's so cold and blue and... cavernous. And the fans are so passive.

UFC shows seem a lot more hyped and noisy and energetic. Even though it's a much smaller crowd, they're right on top of the action and really vocal, and it adds to the effect.

On the subject of trashing fighters: I think everyone understands the difference between respectful commentary / criticism and being blatantly disrespectful. It's the difference between being in front of someone's face, and being at home and anonymous at your computer.

For example.

At home on the internet: "I can't wait to see Liddell lose, because he's old and his cardio sucks and he wins fights with eyepokes and lucky punches. Totally overrated."

Meeting Chuck Liddell: "How's the training going, champ? Ready for Tito? Can you sign this program?"

Yes, you have the right to an opinion about a sport you're into. But you deserve to be treated with respect and courtesy by people who don't even know you, and so do the fighters.

i think that that may have been my londwinded point. i think that treating a fighter as you would like to be treated is the threshold.

i dont entirely agree with that because some poeple may be overly socially aware, or there may be different persectives on any number of things. some things arent intened to be rude, bu onbe a guy gets ****, he may be a bit gunshy about a few things.

also, rules are by there very nature ambiguous, and may have implications that were not considered when they were codified.

What did Rogan say when Nick Diaz fought that dude Ouishi from Japan or some dude like that??

"Dude walks around like he's on heroin".

No offense to Japanese Pride fans, but that's how I feel when I watch a Pride event. You could have Cro Cop fly into the ring and spinning back kick someone in the head and his head split wide open and you'd likely have a very minimal response from the crowd.

It's cultural, Asians are very stoic very passive people. It's just the way they are.

Except at Karaoke bars.
