My boxing vs. MMA rant.
Here's something I posted on another site. It's not very busy over there. But, I was checking out the forums and noticed this topic.

To me, the whole boxing vs. MMA debate is just as stale as UFC vs. Pride. I'm a fan of combat sports. I don't care what it is. MMA, boxing, college wrestling, karate; I don't care. In my opinion, just saying "my sport is better than yours" is closed minded and ignorant.
Both boxing an MMA are exciting. The reason there's so much debate, is because people are trying to compare them as similar sports. They are not. They're 2 different sports. Each is as exciting as the next, if you give it a chance.
Boxing is exciting to me because of it's history. I love seeing old fights, learning about their legacy's, and seeing the impact different fighters had on the sport. Seeing as MMA is so new, you don't get this. Boxing is a very exciting sport if you can watch it for what it is. A lot of people use the excuse that "boxing is not like a real street fight!" I'm sorry to tell you, neither is MMA. MMA is a sport, not a street brawl. Most MMA fans are tough guys expecting to see a blood bath every time they turn the T.V. on. These are the people that boo fights when they go to the ground, ect. Boxing is a chess match. Although KO's are nice and very common, the point of boxing is to score points with your combinations and footwork. Boxing is a great sport, but not a lot of people give it a chance.
MMA is also a great sport. To me, MMA is ranked above even football and baseball. MMA is exciting because there's so many different elements involved. Most predictions are pretty random, because it's almost impossible to predict how a fight will end. It could end by submission, (T)KO, GnP, corner stoppage, or decision. There are, however, 2 problems I have with MMA. The first is impatient American crowns (I say this as a patriotic American.) It's annoying to hear drunk A-holes booing fighters because they are ignorant as to what's going on. Sorry to tell you people, but MMA isn't street fighting. I'll go out and say it; Stephen Bonnar vs. Forrest Griffin was a terrible technical fight. If either of these guys would have fought like that against a top tier opponent, they would have been destroyed. My second problem with MMA is the lack of respect for decision wins. When people try and debate wins, they always seem to bring up "He only beat so-and-so by decision!" Sorry to tell you boys, but a win is a win. Those are really my only problems with MMA. And as you can see, those problems are caused by so called "fight fans", rather then the sport itself.
So, in closing. I like both sports. If you bring the "boxing owns MMA" or vice versa argument with out taking the time to learn about both, you're ignorant. Sorry about the rant, but I'm done.
What was the topic again...?

So, anyone care to comment on the topic?

the only thing i don't agree on is that "american fans boo"
this really pisses me off. i've never been drunk at a fight, but i have been drunk and i would never boo a athlete.
it has nothing to do with being american, it has to do with being ignorant to mma. americans are not the only ones that are ignorant to mma.

In most cases, the german boxing crowd boos everyone they don't know. It's embarrassing.

I used to be a big boxing fan but when all the big name heavyweights retired I slowly lost interest. I used to like boxing because of the drama and the personalitys.
When I was a kid it used to be so cool when there was a boxing fight on. My Dad, my brothers and I would all watch the fights together and debate who was going to win and why and just talk about the fights for hours before the fights. Honestly, the part I enjoyed the most was the pre-fight. The thing was, once all of the guys that we really knew were retired it made it so to me atleast, all their was was the fight itself.
I am still a sucker for a big name fight but now I really dont know too many fighters. I will definetly be getting Mayweather vs De La Hoya.

UFC = two men in hotpants rolling on the floor hugging and rubbing each other; crowd "uohhhh, who climaxes first?"
Aika, guile will ban you, if you don't stop. You are encouraging our members to post junk just like you do. Not good.

Very good post. The sport does not make the fighters, the personalities make the sport.

Bull, LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who climaxes first?
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.
Me? I look at them separately and a huge fan of both. I like seeing two punchy's go at it in boxing to see how many times they can hit each other and see which one goes Muhammad Ali into retirement first.
And there's nothing more entertaining than seeing a retired pro boxer talk later on .
And MMA?
I look at MMA as more of a realistic view of what happens in a real fight in the real world. It usually starts standing, then ends up on the ground. And to me, that's a better representation of fighting as a whole.
Like I said before. Boxing is an aspect of fighting, but in and of itself isn't fighting. It's boxing.

MMA is MMA, and there is simply nothing like it in my opinion. It's the sport I've been waiting for my whole life. It's almost like a real life Bloodsport...that's the pinnacle of awesomeness to me, nothing could ever possibly compare to it unless there were less rules.
Boxing is more sport to me. I'm not really into it and I don't know any of the boxers, but if I'm flipping around and it's on, I'll watch it for sure. I've watched a lot of the classic fights, especially the Ali fights, and I have mad respect for the sport, but honestly my favorite thing about boxing is its effect on MMA. It's a shame there's more money in boxing, I would like to see how the best boxers in the world could fight in the cage if they were taught some take down defense and a bit of grappling.

I completely disagree. The comment about Bloodsport is the same reason that MMA is still illegal in many states. MMA isn't like a street fight. MMA is a sport.
I train and people always ask me what I'd do if so-and-so were to pick a fight with me. And I always tell them I'd hit him in the balls first of all. Street fighting is brutal, MMA is a sport. MMA needs to ditch the street fighting image if it wants to continue to grow.

Dude, I know MMA is a sport. Boxing is also a sport. The difference between boxing and MMA is what I was shining a light on: The Bloodsport factor. MMA is more like a real fight than boxing, and it is that quality that brings me to it. It is also that quality that boxing lacks, which causes me to lose interest in it.

I love this post. I am definitely a big fan of the 79/90 era of pro boxing... Also , to comment on the original, yes MMA and boxing are not real life fighting scenarios. Nice old post btw.

Well said. Very interesting. Just out of curiosity, have you or do you study journalism? This and the other editorial you've posted are written well and seem to be well thought out.

I have been saying this for a while and seem to take flack every time. MMA is controlled, real confrontation is not. Nice post...

excellent topic......both boxing and MMA are great sports,imho.....there will be some boxing matches that are better than others...some MMA matches that are better than others.
there are some boxing matches that i'll have little interest in,for whatever reason...
boxing right now is what it is....there seems to be a spark (or sparks) missing.....UFC is on fire....the popularity of UFC/MMA will continue to grow...
.........as long as it doesn't shoot itself in its' foot....if you know what i mean....

I like boxing when they are actually boxing, not as Aika said, 4 punches, grab, referee separates, repeat. That's what I like about MMA there are so many more things you can do than in boxing which is limited to throwing leather and that's it! even kickboxing(except SanShou rules) seems very limited compared to MMA!
MMA was the sport I was waiting for also! It's the perfect combat sport IMO!

I totally agree, and I get the same. I've had people come up to me and say the exact same thing. Also, what is the likelihood of two MMA fighters meeting each other in the street and fighting? MMA is a controlled sport, a street fight is totally different. First thing i'd do in a street fight would be kick them in the balls, and if they're still standing there.... Kick em again. But saying that, i wouldn't mind watching a couple of real good mma fighters having a brawl outside the local!
