This 26 year old german is the first European of all times that won the gold medal. Uusually the Chinese/Asians are the best.

After school, he went to China to get trained by a chinese grandmaster. He trained up to 8 hours a day, each day.

I like that the Wushu competition demands both sparring and forms. I appreciate forms, but my friend's nephew is a TKD black belt, 12 years old, does great forms, and will probably be beaten up by everyone who finds out he's a black belt. Maybe we'll see our German in a Jet Li film. For those of you that don't know, Jet Li is probably the most famous--and best?-- Wushu practitioner.

Jet Li participated in the sport of wushu in the non-sparring event. He began his wushu career as a member of the Beijing Wushu team, an athletic group organized to perform martial arts forms during the All China Games. As a member of the team, he received wushu training and went on to win fifteen gold medals and one silver medal in Chinese wushu championships:

* 1974 — Youth National Athletic Competition: broadsword form gold medal, optional empty-hand form gold medal, all-round gold medal;

* 1975 — Third Chinese Wushu Championships: long fist form gold medal, spear form silver medal;

* 1977 — National Wushu Competition: long-fist form gold medal, broadsword form gold medal;

* 1978 — National Wushu Competition: long-fist form gold medal, optional empty-hand form gold medal, broadsword form gold medal, all-round gold medal;

* 1979 — Fourth Chinese Wushu Championships: long-fist form gold medal, optional empty-hand form gold medal, broadsword form gold medal, sparring form gold medal, all-round gold medal.

All his optional empty-hand form medals were won with a form called fanzi yingzhaoquan (翻子鷹爪拳, Fanzi eagle claw). His success led to the PRC declaring Jet Li to be a "National Treasure".

I've heard Jet Li himself say in an interview that, like Jackie Chan, he's an actor and wushu is more about acrobatics than fighting. I've got a friend here in Toronto whose former roommate is one of the top female Wushu practitioners in the country. She can do amazing stuff, but her background is in dance and she says it's just another form of dance.
