Boxing News -- 24 hours/day - Reload often!
A plethora of international media converged inside the MGM Grand Garden arena moments after "The Pretty Boy" and "The Golden Boy" battled it out over twelve rounds for the WBC Super Welterweight title in hopes of catching some verbal jabs at the post fight press conference.
First to speak was a disturbed Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer who took the mic with an official media copy of the Nevada State Athletic Commission's official scorecard. Much to the dismay of vocal Mayweather supporters in the crowd, Schaefer pointed out an error in the copy of the scorecards.
"Under De la Hoya there is a "B" for blue corner, when in fact he was fighting in the red corner," said Schaefer. "I truly believe this was an honest mistake by the commission but I would like to be able to sit down and talk to the judges and somebody from the commission or even the WBC about this."
However according to Schaefer neither members of the commission or the WBC could be found; probably due to the fact that it had been nearly an hour since the fight had ended.
"Maybe they went to go cash their checks," said Schaefer jokingly.
Schaefer then introduced the victorious Floyd Mayweather Jr. who took to the podium sipping on a can of Coca~Cola while dressed like Sergeant Pepper alongside his good friend Curtis Jackson, better known as rapper 50 Cent.
A courteous and slightly emotional Mayweather began to thank the many members of his team who helped him throughout his illustrious career that according to Mayweather Jr. ended tonight.
"I beat the best at 135lbs, I beat the best at 140lbs, I beat the best at 147, and now I beat the best at 154lbs,"said Mayweather Jr. "I've done everything I can with this sport."
"I came out on top and I left on top. He's a great champ and I'm a great champ and we gave a hell of a fight," added the still undefeated thirty-year-old champion.
"Oscar is a great fighter and he can take a punch, I know that and that's why I feel comfortable walking away from the sport at this time. I am a good guy, I feed the homeless, I feed battered women, I do good things. Now it is time for me to do things other than fight including my new promotional company Mayweather Promotions, and I'm sure Golden Boy and Mayweather Promotions will meet in the ring soon enough," said Mayweather Jr. (38-0, 24 KOs).
In an interview, Mayweather clarified "If the fans demand a rematch, what can I say? I don't know what the future holds for Floyd Mayweather. As of now I'm retired, but I have to talk it over with my team and see what they say."
* * *
Shortly after, a still proud Oscar de la Hoya made his way around the long curtains on onto to podium to address the eagerly awaiting media.
"I want to thank my fans for their support. I don't feel like a loser, I felt like I did what I needed to do. I respect the judges' decision. They are professionals and I respect that," said De la Hoya.
"I came out to fight and put pressure. If I didn't put on the pressure there would have been no fight. I had to take the risk and push forward or there would be no fighting," added the former champion.
When asked what he felt about the minor controversy surrounding the confusion on the scorecards regarding the color of corner each fighter was in De la Hoya stated that he felt the commission did no wrongdoing,
"If you look at the last round two of the judges scored it 10-9 for me and Jerry Roth scored it 10-9 for Mayweather. If he would have scored that round for me the fight would have been a draw. But I think it was an honest mistake and I respect the judges' decision. You have to. He's the champion and you have to respect that."
The question many fans were eager to ask was what the future held for De la Hoya and his ring inside the ropes, "We'll have to go back to the drawing board. Would I fight him again? Sure, but we would have to sit down and figure that out. Once I go back and sit down and think about it I will know," added The Golden Boy (38-5, 30 KOs).
On an interesting side note Floyd Mayweather Jr. cleared up some questions about his rumored life after boxing. In the past weeks boxing's widely regarded pound for pound champion had made derogatory comments about mixed martial arts and its fighters, prompting UFC President Dana White to reportedly offer Floyd Mayweather Jr. a fight against current UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk to prove if Mayweather's suspicions of mixed martial arts fighters were true.
Mayweather Jr. swallowed his pride and sincerely stated to Fightnews that he has no plans of competing in any organization of mixed martial arts,
"I apologize to the UFC, sometimes we say things that we shouldn't have said and I'm man enough to admit that. I apologize to the Fertittas, Lorenzo and Dana White (UFC owners). I respect MMA fighters and what they do in the UFC. I have no plans of fighting in mixed martial arts."
I wouldn't be suprised to see a rematch. I felt like that was the underlying message of the PPV. Everything that happened, before and after the fight, including the split decision and this supposed corner color mixup, was pointing towards a rematch. This is the biggest boxing event in a long time, a repeat would be less successful of course, but still the biggest attraction boxing has to offer in many people's eyes. And i gained some respect for Mayweather seeing him apologize for his assinine comments about the UFC.

I voted no due to everything I read and have heard about the fight. I probably shouldnt have voted since I didnt actually see the fight, haha. Is there a bias towards DLH here, sure there is. I think in part, though, that its as much of a dislike for PBF as it is a love for Oscar. I wanted DLH to win this fight pretty bad, however, if he didnt win it then he didnt win it. Thats the way it goes. If he didnt win the fight, then all the rounds from the judges score cards should have went to PBF.

Why did Vegas get banned anyway?
I voted no. I thought DLH pushed the fight, was more aggresive and had more ring control. I know that Mayweather boxed beautifully but I agree with DLH when he said that if he didn't push the pace there wouldn't be a fight. Great fight though, but it didn't have the same zip to it that a fight like Tyson/Holyfield had. I wanna REMATCH!!!

De La Hoya is just unlucky when it goes to decisions. I wanted him to crush Mayweather's face in.

Just for the record, this fight sucked and more evidence just how far down the toilet boxing has gone. All Hype, no action.
This just might have been the dagger.

it WAS a dagger.. i agree... i was at a party with about 20. i was the biggest fan out of them all boxing wise, and every one of us thought the "fight" was horrible.. the hype was TOO much and the fight was garbage.. no damage, no hard punches, no nothing... 2 people also feel asleep during the 6th to 8th round...
i will happily watch all the HBO or showtime free boxing events, but they wont get one more PPV dime from me....

It was a 60 dollar PPV sparring match. I think the Dana White and Tito Ortiz match wouldve been more entertaining.

Even if Oscar won, I wouldn't pay another $55-60 for another fight cause I have better things to buy with $55-60. I should have waited and watch it on HBO next week cause HBO usually play it one week after the fight.
