Calzaghe trash talking Hopkins
Apparently, Joe Calzaghe has learned a few new things during his multiple visits to the US the last year. He's taken the time to trash talk Bernard Hopkins, a notorious trashtalker in his own right. This is from the Fight Network.
Quote:
Undisputed Super-Middleweight king Joe Calzaghe has re-named Bernard Hopkins "Mary Hopkins" after the Light Heavyweight champion's co-trainer, Nazim Richardson, mentioned that his charge should face the winner of Roy Jones Jr.-Felix Trinidad, instead of the Welshman Calzaghe..
Calzaghe, who previously said that Hopkins would do his best to talk his way out of a fight against him, has likened Hopkins to Mary Poppins from the 1962 classic movie:
He said, 'As of now Bernard Hopkins should be called Mary Hopkins. Every time he says my name it's: SUPERCALZAGHEFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS!'
'In fact, there is more fight in Mary Poppins than Hopkins. I'd have more respect for him if he just came out and said: "Joe, look, if I fight you I'm going to get my ass seriously beat. I accept that you are the best so why don't you just let me be and allow me to fight the winner of these old guys so I can just have an easy pay day" but instead, he's got his trainer to basically say: "Thanks, but no thanks, Bernard doesn't need to tangle with a dangerous young guy like you."
Referring to 2002 when Hopkins agreed to fight Calzaghe for $3 million only to come back the next day and demand $6m, Calzaghe said: 'If he is the legend that he says he is then fight me, otherwise be known as the guy who twice chickened out of fighting Joe Calzaghe.'
'At least Mary Poppins took a Spoonful of Sugar to help the medicine go down, Hopkins won't get that luxury against me!'

Hopkins is gonna have to bite b/c that one could stick.
Think Calzaghe will actually fight somewhere other than Cardiff or Manchester?

Calzaghe has had offers to fight in Vegas a few times. He talked about it during an ESPN Friday Night Fights interview. He said he would love to, but the offers for the Wales fights always blow away the Vegas offers.
The problem comes with the promoters. Even Don King has said he likes promoting over there in the Millenium Stadium because with 45,000 plus in attendance, the live gate is huge, and the broadcast, be it PPV or live on HBO/Showtime, comes off fine. Now if they could sell out a stadium over in the States, you would find the promoters being more forceful in getting him over here.

Thanks for the info, Gygax. "The problem comes with the promoters." Yup, that just about sums it up.
They can't sell out yet they changed the time of his last fight to broadcast prime-time in the U.S. I'm glad they did change it - that was a good fight to watch live.

I am sure Joe would fight B-hop where ever it took just to get to fight him. Like many others have stated though it has more about the promoters than anything.
I believe Joe would handle Hopkins b/c Joe has deceptively fast hand, even faster than Hopkins in my opinion and if he doesnt have that advantage he will lose.....

If I was Calzaghe then I would do the same thing. He has just come off of the win that makes him "the real deal" he never beat a guy with the boxing following like his last bout. I give him lead way. Didn't Hopkins just recently rename his opponent? Pinky or something. Let's be fair here. When someone who is not Black talks sh it he is crucified. Equality reigns. Be honest with yourself and others he is doing nothing different than other Elite boxers at this time.
P.S. I am a black man (not African-American) and I live in the prosperity of equality in America.

Are you referring to me (since you quoted me)? If so, how am I crucifying Joe or not being fair? I'm not sure anyone here has a problem with what Joe said, so I'm not sure who your comments are directed to.

Yeah, I didn't think anyone had a problem w/Joe either. It seemed like the reverse - appreciating the "Mary Hopkins" moniker.
Unless I missed something...
