Default Roger Chooses Floyd Jr, Forbes Hires Jeff

As reported earlier by BoxingScene's David Greisman, Floyd Mayweather Jr., during a live conference call to promote his WrestleMania appearance, threatened to fire his uncle/trainer Roger Mayweather, if his uncle continued to train Steve Forbes for his May 3 bout with Oscar De La Hoya.

"Lately, I've been upset with my uncle, Roger Mayweather," Mayweather said. "My uncle Roger has been training Steve Forbes and if Steve Forbes beats Oscar, it's taking money out of my pocket. [If he continues], I'll have to move on and get another trainer."

If Roger helped Forbes pull off the upset, it would cripple a potential De Le Hoya-Mayweather rematch in September. Even the slightest possibility of Floyd losing out on a $20 million dollar payday was enough for him to force his uncle in a tough spot.

According to a recent report by Dan Rafael, Roger told Forbes that he would talk things out with Floyd, and then meet him at the gym. Roger had his talk and then stood Forbes up. Once Roger no-showed, Forbes knew right away that a new trainer was needed. He fired Roger and hired the third Mayweather brother, Jeff.

Jeff is the trainer of former heavyweight champion Sultan Ibragimov.

Forbes told Rafael that after Roger no-showed for their training session on Thursday, he tried to reach him by phone without success. He's not mad at Roger, but he is disappointed.

"It's more [of a problem] with Floyd because he is Roger's boss," Forbes said. "He pays him a nice salary. I just wish Roger would have called me or come by the gym instead of just not showing up. But I'm not upset with Roger. If I had been a pro only two or three years, maybe this would bother me. But I've been a pro for 12 years. This is just another little story to my story. It doesn't affect me one bit, but it's just bizarre."

Is Steve the one that lost in the Contender championship? He is an impressive fighter, and could very likely pull off an upset.

That's correct Iceman! STeve Forbes was on the contender! He's a dangerous opponent for Oscar if Oscar goes in there thinking he's a can! He's a good bit smaller than DLH though.

Yeah I can see what you mean as he is a quick boxer sort of like Mosely who beat Oscar twice (really once) but I think Oscar will push him around a bit and possibly finish him. I was not impressed at all w/ that Grady guy he lost to in the finals on the Contender.....

I'm not 100% sure now, but I think I remember reading it was around the 2-3 million mark!
This fight is Tailor made for DLH too look like a killer again! Putting him against a much smaller guy, with a little bit of a name (off the back of the contender show) DLH should walk through him, convincing joe public he's ready for a Superfight rematch with PBF in the Autumn!
He's already been talking about this fight with PBF! Makes me think he's maybe looking too far ahead! I dont think Forbes, small and all as he is, should be underestimated in any way!

I'm not sure anyone is screaming out for this fight apart from DLH and PBF. The fight will again generate crazy sums of money like the last one did! Cotto v PBF is a fight I think fans would be more excited to see! (I think we will see it after PBF v DLH 2)

I got to be honest, while I'm the first one to say "This fight shouldntt happen again, it'll be the same as before, blah, blah, blah!" I'll be squealing like a teenage girl again when the hype starts up again and boxing is dominating the sports pages! Whether or not this fight Should happen or not, there is no denying that it will be good for the sport. And somehow, If Oscar can win??? Oh boy!!

I'd much rather see PBF fight Cotto. Even Cintron or Margarito would be better than wasting my time with another DLH fight. I know Oscar thinks he won, but I think this fight disappointed alot of people.

I have watched the fight many times since, and it's weird, even though I know the result, I always think Oscar is gonna win!!

He started so well! Had the right tactics, to get close, but not too close so your shots are smothered (like Hatton did). DLH just gassed badly! and didnt fight much past round 6-7. Whether this was due to age or wrong training plan, we will find out in the rematch. I dont think he will adopt a different fightplan. I really think, that's the only way to beat floyd! It's a credit to PBF's genius, that, that, in the 1st DLH fight was the most troubled we've seen him since the Castillo fight.

Having said that, I do think that Cotto, given his Boxer/Puncher style is the guy to give PBF the most problems! Margarito too, but I'm not convinced of his power at the weight!

I agree; I have been sayin for the last few years that Cotto is the man that could beat PBF right now. I was really hyped and hoped Oscar and/or Ricky would be able to do it but deep down I knew PBF was gonna beat them both. I actually believe Cotto has all of the tools plus the style to beat PBF.....
