Default Tyson still getting recognition

www.MSN.com has a link to the Ten Most Feared People in Sports with a picture of Mike Tyson who they have as #1...No MMA fighters made this list which contains everyone from Poker Players to Video Game players. I personally would step in the ring with Tyson before I stepped into the ring against some of those UFC and Pride guys. Then again, Tyson did bite a guys ear off. You can read the article here.

Quote:
1. Mike Tyson
Sport: Boxing

Career Highlights: A former WBA, IBF and WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson notched 44 knockouts over a 20-year career. At age 20, he knocked out Trevor Berbick to become the youngest WBC heavyweight titleholder of all time. In 2003, he was named by Ring Magazine at No. 16 among its 100 Greatest Punchers of All Time List.

So, why are his opponents so scared of him? Sure, Tyson retired on June 11 after an embarrassing loss to no-name Danny Williams. And yes, his best days are long behind him. But, regardless of that, he's still No. 1 on this list. Why? Because after he bit Evander Holyfield's ear off in the summer of 1997, Tyson ensured his permanent place in this spot for the next 200 years. Think about it. Is there any amount of money that would convince you to get in the ring with this guy?

Didn't think so.

I really don't understand how a competitive eater or cyperathlete would be more feared than a MMA fighter. I would definitly take one of these guys on in their sport before I took on a MMA fighter. Except maybe football. I'd much rather loose in an eating contest than get pounded out by lets say Fedor.

People are afraid of Mike Tyson because he does not let guys pick on him anymore. He is truly born to be a fighter, a real fighter.

I don't have a problem with Tyson being number 1. If I saw him crossing the street in my direction I would probably be going the other way. But it’s some of the other things that are on the list. I don't think that a tennis player could scare me if he was carrying a bloody butcher’s knife.

maybe they meant scariest athlete's within thier own sports. it was mentioned that a poker player was on the list? who is afraid of a poker player? i think if Pride fighting was more mainstream in the USA Fedor Emelienenko would be on that list or maybe CroCop since he's beaten so many people with that high kick of his.

Please stop referring to this line. LOL
As Tyson said this Lewis was childless, and one of his very best friends died about a week prior to that fight against Lou Savarese in 2000. Tyson knew and still knows how to play with the media and his opponents.

I know what you mean luvtobox! Remember his second fight against Holyfield for instance: after he was disqualified, Tyson was surrounded by these security and police men, but he was still trying to get to Evander to beat him up. ... And some people say Tyson was afraid of Holyfield.
No boxer has ever been more intimidating than Iron Mike Tyson. In the 80s he was considered absolutely unbeatable, now "experts" say he never could fight an opponent who was not afraid of him. Why do so many people not give Tyson the credit he truly deserves?! As a kid actually he was fighting men, heavyweight champions, and he was beating them up badly. ... The best ever!! ...

i should explain further Bull. Tyson was my favorite fighter of all time by far. i thought he almost toyed with the media at times with his comments and is actually alot smarter then everyone gave him credit for (even though he obviously had his problems)... he actually use to live right up the street from me too in ct! he is a scary guy! and on espn classic if u get it they often rerun his old fights... they can fit like 5 in a 30 min span cause he kills everyone so quick!

Thanks for the details.
I personally think he was only "scary" because he had to.

Tyson of today, I'd have to say no way. AA would tear him apart, I'd even say Iceman would pound him. Fedor would make him look like a chump. Tyson today, is not the Tyson of (being generous here) 5-7 years ago.

I do not think it matters whether your statement is true or not, I believe the question that needs to be answered is: are these guys more intimidating than Tyson?!
For example: Ali beat Foreman. Who of the two was more intimidating? Do you know what I mean?

its unrealistic to compare a dedicated boxer like Tyson to a MMA fighter. they are two differant disciplines. anyhow, the year is 2005 and Tyson no longer is the most feared man in the boxing world, he was but its a title he can no longer carry. however i don't think there is a boxer today that can claim to be feared as much as Tyson WAS or as dominant as he was. at Tyson's peak i think he most certainly deserved to be called the most feared of all boxers, but i feel that today he is'nt much of anything and many people's last memory of him will be him quitting in the ring, unable to continue. regarding Fedor, if you asked 1000 people i doubt 10 of them would know who he is.

Mike Tyson was arrested in Brazil yesterday I heard. A man said he was beat by Tyson who asked him several times not to take a video of him in a nightclub. The day before Tyson was having trouble with the people in charge of the hotel he was staying at: Mike was not allowed to take a group of six women into his hotel room.

------

Tyson might not be the most-feared boxer in the ring anymore, but I personally think he is still the most feared boxer. McBride has a win over Tyson. Who of the two would you rather fight?

I expect more people to remember Tyson than any other boxer ... seriously. Time will tell.

Here is a little more about Mike I found on graciefighter.com today.

Former heavyweight boxing champion of the world, Mike Tyson was arrested this in Sao Paulo. The "Iron man" is in town resting after a trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he was interviewed by Diego Armando Maradona.

Tyson was arrested after he attacked a TV crew member who was trying to capture his entrance into a local night club. After he realized he was being followed, Tyson took the camera from reporter and threw it on the ground. The police were called and found Tyson in another night club. He was taken to the nearest police station for his deposition. Tyson was cleared to go after that.

Ever since he got in Sao Paulo, on Tuesday night, Tyson became very aggressive with the local press. When he noticed the presence of several reporters at the lobby of the hotel he checked in, he complained: "You are making me nervous! I'm gonna kick your asses. Leave me alone!"

Before what happened last night, Tyson's plans were to stay in Sao Paulo until Friday.

I would still say that Mike Tyson is one of the most intimidating people I can think of.
