Joe Calzaghe is good for the sport and has been for longer than he's been getting credit for.

As he beat Jeff Lacy, some said JC was the best kept secret in boxing. I don't think so - it just shows that you need to watch boxing on a global level in order to get a clear view on the whole picture.
I have seen Calzaghe against Mario Veit twice (2001 and 2005) for instance, I knew there was something special about him, which was why I couldn't decide whether he'd win or Lacy.

Funny you mention the Mario Veit fight's. I actually was watching the 1st one again last night on DVD! Veit was huge, like 6'4" or something and undefeated. JC had him on the floor 3 times in the first round. That was a different Calzaghe back then! He punched with a lot more power and liked to load up with the left hand. He's like a different fighter. None of those inside-of-the glove "slapping" punches he is now criticised for. He had to adapt because of his fragile hands. Thats why I think I have most admiration for him. He totally re-invented himself as a fighter. He also has a tremendous ability to switch styles mid-fight as well (see Kessler and Hopkins fights). Plus, I dont care what anyone says, he fought among the best around at the time, with the exception of RJJ (Calzaghe maintains he chased Jones for years) and maybe Mike McCallum

He beat Eubank, Omar Sheika, Byron Mitchell and Charles Brewer. All very tough guys. RJJ at the same time was getting back slapped for beating Vinny Pazienza! A former lightweight champion blown up to a super middleweight!!*

*This will be the last time I EVER even slightly critisise RJJ on FF* For the benefit of my argument, I have neglected to note, he also beat McCallum, Toney and Virgil Hill at this time!

If I remember correctly, Joe even offered to come to Germany and fight Sven Ottke. Well, it never happened and I don't think this was Calzaghe's fault.

Yeah! Thats another thing that bothers me! People saying JC is a "hometown fighter". He went to Germany to rematch Mario Veit. He fought someone else in Denmark. He fought countless English fighters in England

I think those that do not regularly fight in the USA are being labelled hometown fighters. LOL In some cases it's true, but not all of them.
