FF: Do you think Floyd will fight Miguel Cotto?
Roger Mayweather:Why wouldn’t he? I mean, Shane Mosley fought Cotto, didn’t he? And what did Cotto do with Mosley? I’m not even sure he won that fight. I know they gave it to him but I’m not going to say he won. Why wouldn’t Floyd fight him?
FF: If Cotto beats Antonio Margarito, a Mayweather vs. Cotto fight could be a very big money fight for early next year…
Roger Mayweather:Listen, if it makes dollars, it makes sense. It’s obvious Floyd doesn’t duck and dodge money. So if Cotto beats Margarito impressively, then we’ve got something to talk about. Until he does that, he hasn’t been impressive to me. He was impressive against Zab Judah, but Zab let off him and Zab hurt Cotto also. We’ve got to wait and see how he looks vs. Margarito to determine how big a fight between him and Floyd would be and how well it would sell.
FightFan.com here on location at the Mayweather gym with Roger Mayweather. We wanted to start out by asking you to reflect back on the Mayweather vs. Hatton fight from a few months back…
Roger Mayweather:The Mayweather vs. Hatton fight turned out just the way it was supposed to. My nephew did what he was supposed to do and beat (Hatton) at what he does best. All he does is brawl and hold and brawl and hold, my nephew fought him at his best and he knocked him out anyway. If they were to fight again, Floyd would stop him even sooner. What else can he do?
It just goes to show you that when they weren’t holding and grabbing, there was a big difference in ability. When it came down to the fight, I told Floyd to stay right there with him and don’t move. He didn’t have the defence Floyd has and doesn’t have the boxing skills.
FF: What do you think about Floyd’s decision to take some time off? Is he still interested in boxing and does he still have the hunger?
Roger Mayweather:Oh yeah, Floyd loves being known as the best fighter in the world. He won’t be off for too long. We just have to wait and see what transpires with De La Hoya (and a September rematch). Aside from that, he does what he wants to do.
FF: What do you think about a Floyd vs. Oscar rematch? Obviously it will make good money but do we really need to see it again? I was of the opinion Floyd won the first fight very clearly…
Roger Mayweather:Well, you know some people feel Floyd won, but other people say things like, ‘Oh, but De La Hoya threw all the punches…’ But none of them were landing! It’s not about how many punches you throw, it’s about how many connect! Obviously Floyd was the one connecting and that’s what won him the fight. I think the next fight will be much better, because De La Hoya will be trained by my brother who is a great trainer…and his son is being trained by me.
FF: How much room is there for Floyd to improve on his performance from the first fight? Are there adjustments he can make?
Roger Mayweather:Oh yeah. All he’s got to do to improve is come off the ropes and stay in the centre of the ring then we’ll see how well De La Hoya fights. In the first fight, Floyd hit him in the sixth round and stunned him. If Floyd comes off the ropes, the rematch may not even go to a decision. We’ll have to wait and see.
FF: I don’t want to ask you to look past a potential rematch, but if another Oscar fight comes off and you guys win and everyone gets paid, does Floyd have a few more fights left? Does he want to fight beyond that?
Roger Mayweather:He may fight Ricky Hatton again, and before Floyd’s career is over, he’ll fight Cotto.
FF: That’s what I was going to ask you, and the question on everyone’s mind. Do you think Floyd will fight Miguel Cotto?
Roger Mayweather:Why wouldn’t he? I mean, Shane Mosley fought Cotto, didn’t he? And what did Cotto do with Mosley? I’m not even sure he won that fight. I know they gave it to him but I’m not going to say he won. Why wouldn’t Floyd fight him?
FF: What do you think about the potential Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito match up this summer?
Roger Mayweather:I’m not sure how good Margarito really is. I’m not sure how good Miguel Cotto really is. Cotto fought DeMarcus Corley and got hurt. He fought Shane Mosley and got hurt. I’ve seen him get wobbled in a lot of fights. I know he’s a good puncher, but I don’t know what he can and can’t take.
FF: If Cotto beats Antonio Margarito, a Mayweather vs. Cotto fight could be a very big money fight for early next year…

FF: What do you think about that style match up if the fight were to come off?
Roger Mayweather: (Floyd has) too much boxing ability. He’s got too many gifts. Skill and luck are the only things that win fights. Anybody can get lucky, but nine times out of 10 skills pay the bills.
