Tyson, the most overrated boxer EVER?
Is it just me or is Mike Tyson the most overrated boxer? Everyone says that in his prime, Tyson was unstoppable, but I read that in his prime he lost to a boxer with a 0-18 record. Then he goes to prison for rape and comes back even worse than before. The thing with Tyson is that if he doesn't knock his opponent out in the first 3 rounds he gives up because he is a coward. His last fight with McBride was a joke. That was the 4th loss in a row where he gave up. He has no heart and he is a coward.
Any thoughts?

Somebody mentioned my name?!
Everybody is entitled to his or her very own opinion.
Please explain to me why you "hate" Tyson.
He never lost to a guy with a record of 0-18, his first loss as a professional was against James "Buster" Douglas. The night was all wrong for Tyson: he had about 20-25 lbs overweight two weeks before the fight, he did not train seriously at all and was just not ready for a battle. Douglas' mother died shortly prior to the fight, he was kind of unstoppable that night.
There always will be the discussion whether Tyson actually has knocked out Douglas. In the eighth round he floored him, but the referee counted that slowly that he could rise in time (Douglas was down for a lot more than ten seconds I think).
Anyway, in my view Mike Tyson is the greatest boxer ever. He became the youngest Heavyweight Champ of all times at age 20, he unified all the titles to be Undisputed Champ at 21. His performances were just awesome: knocking out Michael Spink in 91 seconds; throwing bombs all night while almost not getting hit back. I think Ali was fast, Foreman was powerfull, Tyson was both of it at the same time. Just a great fighter with the biggest heart in a fighter I know of (I followed his career both as a boxer and as a man, so I hope I am able to judge it).
Let me repeat myself: please explain to me why you "hate" Tyson.
One other thing ... saying Tyson is overrated: what is your all-time Great Heavyweight list?

The Ali vs Tyson arguments just never go anywhere. I'm not about to get into it, but I must say, Mike Tyson was the most exciting boxer I have ever seen - new or old.

Well, I disagree when you say he had the biggest heart. Anyone who gives up on 4 fights because he can't knock the guy out is considered weak hearted in my book. And with his fight against James Douglas, Tyson's people's excuse for loosing was that James' mother died so that game him strength. That could be true, but if my mother died a week before my big fight, I would be devistated. Tyson always has some sort of excuse to why he looses. That is why I hate Tyson. I hate people who can't just say "I lost, he was the better man. I will just have to train harder next time."
Also, there have been fights (can't remember who Tyson was fighting) where he purposly drops his mouth guard over and over. Maybe, I hate Tyson more than I should, but I just really don't consider him one of the greastest boxers. Joe Lewis and Ali were great boxers, I don't think Tyson really competes. But that is just my opinion.

Tyson gave up in four fights and did not say he just has to train harder next time??
Buster Douglas
Tyson knocked out in the tenth round, trying to put his mouth piece in to keep on fighting after he got a beating. After the fight Tyson said he would not mind the loss because he earned 12 million dollar.
Evander Holyfield
Fight stopped at the beginning of the eleventh round, Tyson still standing after getting knocked down in round six and heavily hurt in round ten. He refused to go down again because he is a warrior and wanted to win. After the fight he said he had to take his hat off to Evander.
Second fight stopped after the second bite. In my view Holyfield should have been the one who got disqualified.
Lennox Lewis
Tyson down a couple times, trying to stand up in round 8. At the end he says something like he loves Lewis, he was the better man, he would love to get another chance. After the Etienne fight Mike admitted he was not ready for Lewis in February of 2003.
Danny Williams
Tyson mentioned,if I remember it correctly, usually Williams is a one or two round fight for him. He did hurt his knee in round one, I truly think so.
Kevin McBride
Jeff Fenech wanted Tyson to quit, Mike accepted and congratulated to McBride and admitted he cannot do it anymore.
Please explain your previous statement to me because I believe you are wrong.

Just curios about the bite thing. I never saw that fight, just heard about Tyson biting the guys ear. Why do you think that Evander should have been disqualified?

I think Holyfield intentionally headbutted Tyson many times (in both fights), Tyson got cut (in both fights) and nobody did anything about it.
Have you seen Rahman's head after his fight with Evander?

He will say he has to train harder so he looks good, but later, he will have an excuse.
EDIT: In the McBride fight, McBride told reporters that Tyson not only headbutted him (like he does in every fight) but bit his nipple.

Ok, everyone probably already knows how I feel on this one. But, here we go anyway. Tyson is the most overrated fighter ever. He had the skills to have been one of the greats but lacked the mental capacity to obtain that level. The guys he beat were either second rate fighters or not in their prime. He did knock out Douglas, though. I counted to like fifteen or something before he got up. However, Douglas dominated that whole fight...from start to finish...with the exception of the one or two hit knockdown. He took Tyson completely out of his game. The weight thing with Tyson should've only effected his endurance...not his boxing skills themselves...Douglas rendered him useless that night. Furthermore, if you were implying that he was fighting on emotions with his mother and all, emotions like that tend to break focus more than amplify it. Just like anger, it'll take you right out of your game. IMHO, Tyson was just outclassed...same way he has been against any real competition throughout his career. If Mike had fought fifteen years earlier or so, we wouldn't even know who Mike Tyson is. He'd been everybody's punching dummy.

Tyson was a great fighter. how can anyone doubt that? maybe today he is overrated, but when he was a champion he was brutal. besides i think Tyson has a lot more video games than Douglas does.

Video games have nothing to do with being a true boxer. Tyson was an average boxer in his prime, nothing more. SmashingMachine's post was perfect and explains what I feel. So read that post.

Sorry, I really can recall names of boxers. I was never into boxing, but I have seen older fights of Tyson when he was in his prime and I wasn't impressed. I wasn't even impressed with the people he was fighting. I am not saying Tyson is a bad fighter, I am just saying he is not great in my opinion. I mean I hear his name all the time, so I except his fights to be amazing, but they are not to me.
