CBS Ratings and Ticket Sales for EliteXC "Unfinished Business"

Thanks, that makes plenty of sense. My gut tells me that nobody over at EliteXC will think about that.

Why's that? I don't quite understand.

The arena they are planning to use in Miami can seat a little over 20,000. By scaling back seating, I mean they at first print just 8,000-10,000 tickets at most, all lower level. If the demand indeed calls for it, they print more.

What you don't want is what happened in the Pru Center where the upper deck was filled (cheaper tickets) while the bottom area was empty. They then asked people to move down and grab empty seats, which lead to a cluster**** where people took seats of others who were on concession lines or in the restrooms.

Stockton, California is the well known home of Nick Diaz. Yet only 2,871 paid for tickets. That barely covered the salary of Antonio Silva, who didn't even fight on the CBS card. The premiere event which featured Kimbo and Gina drew 8,033 with most estimates saying around 6000 paid to get in. If they try to sell the whole arena in Miami, they will be in trouble.

Kimbo is a huge selling point in Miami, but talk to the average casual viewer, including those in Miami who saw that first CBS card, and to a person they came away saying they were surprised that Kimbo was not much better. And with the current economic state of South Florida, don't think that it will be that easy to sell that many tickets in Miami.

Rough crowd...:D

It's not a good idea to doubt Gygax but I think the crowd in Miami will be all right for the Kimbo event.

edit: Fort Lauderdale...I was thinking Miami for some reason..a little different location

They better really scale back the seating for that event, even with it being in Kimbo's hometown.

Now on top of the so so ratings come word of the dismal ticket sales, courtesy of Dann Stupp at MMAJunkie.

This past Saturday's "EliteXC: Unfinished Business" event in Stockton, Calif. -- the second EliteXC event to air on network TV via CBS -- had a large and energetic crowd of spectators.

But few of them -- less than 33 percent in all -- paid to be there at the Stockton Arena.

Of the 8,541 tickets the organization printed for the event, just 2,871 were sold. A total of 3,701 were given away, and 2,023 "deadwood" tickets went unused, according to paperwork the California State Athletic Commission today sent to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

This past Saturday's event drew a live gate of just $268,715. A total of $340,960 in tickets were comp'd, and $206,155 worth of tickets went unsold.

Needless to say, the numbers are hugely disappointing.

"Unfinished Business" also turned out to be a ratings bust; after peaking with more than 6.5 million viewers for its network-TV debut in May, this past Saturday's ratings slipped by more than 40 percent. A simultaneous Spike TV replay of UFC 84 -- an event two months' old -- actually drew more viewers (433,000 to 341,000) in the covered "males 18-34" demographic, though EliteXC scored a slightly higher overall rating.

Despite the live gate and ratings disappointments, the event was lauded for improved production values and better pacing. The night's CBS card (and preceding Showtime card) featured solid match-ups and good fights, though without superstars Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson and Gina Carano competing -- and with less advertising on CBS airwaves -- the show failed to generate the type of buzz that accompanied May's CBS debut.

EliteXC returns to CBS airwaves on Oct. 4 live from the 20,000-seat BankAtlantic Center near Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

They better really scale back the seating for that event, even with it being in Kimbo's hometown.

With all the technology and big brother crap that's available, I'm wondering if they count the recording (DVR or Tivo) at this stage.

This is a basic explanation of how they get ratings. It's actually pretty complicated: HowStuffWorks "How do television ratings work? How do they figure out how many"

Just from researching a little bit I can't find anything about the effects DVRs are having when it comes to watching two channels. What came up was mostly about the effects they are having on revenue from commercials because people are skipping over them.

I had a feeling that might happen. If the pay-per-view numbers were good I'm sure the free ratings would do well also.

Spike TV issued a press release Tuesday afternoon announcing that its re-airing of UFC 84 this past Saturday drew more viewers than CBS and EliteXCs Saturday Night Fights in the key demographic of males 18-34.

According to the release, UFC 84 outdrew Saturday Night Fights in the male 18-34 demo by 27% with Spike totaling 433,00 men compared to CBS 341,000...

Elite going head to head with Cotto vs. Margarito didnt help their cause. Plus I heard they hardly did any promotion. Their show in Oct? should be better. On the bright side, their production value has improved a lot. I was suprised to hear that only 250,000 Dollars were made at the gate. You would think Diaz would have drawn a larger crowd.

The following comes from an article on Fiveouncesofpain.com:

That airing back on May 31, 2008 scored 4.3 million viewers and a 1.9/6 among 18-49 year olds and since the Kimbo Slice bout for that airing aired past primetime (11p) the most viewed portion wasnt included. But lacking any Kimbo anticipation, last nights fights pulled a mere 2.62 million and a 1.0/3 from 9pm-11pm.

More info should come in over the next few days. It should be interesting to see how the final ratings come in and what it could be for EXC on CBS.

This is all that I could find for a comparision.

The first EliteXC show Saturday night on CBS won its time period and drew an audience of more than four million viewers during the first two hours of the broadcast.

According to preliminary Nielsen ratings for Saturday, the 9 to 11 p.m. Eastern portion of the show did a 2.7 rating and a 5 share, an audience of 4.3 million viewers.

Thanks onip...4.3 down to 2.6.

Still decent for a Saturday night but yeah, no Kimbo likely had something to do with that...maybe even the Cotto v. Margarito. Of course most people were tuned into Cops & America's Most Wanted.

Agree with Crash. Those numbers are about right for such a weak event talent wise.

The Diaz fight and the chick fight were cool.

Lawler/Smith was lackluster.

I am impressed by the numbers that EliteXC is able to pull in with such average events. I can only imagine what they will do once they get thier act together and sign some real talent. Justin Eilers and Thomas Denny come to fight but didn't belong against Silva and Diaz. It also makes me wonder the numbers the UFC would pull in if they signed with CBS first? Double, Triple, or even more based on the UFC brand and fighters like Chuck Liddell who have a massive fan base. Overall, very good for MMA.
