'Semtex' to fight for EliteXC

A month ago, ex-Cage Rage Welterweight Champion Paul Daley went against the express wishes of Cage Rage parent entity ProElite and competed on rival UK promotion Cage Warriors' July 12th "Enter the Rough House 7" card. To further stir the pot, the always verbose Brit spoke out against both Cage Rage and ProElite regarding what he perceived as a lack of respect on the part of both companies.

Now 30 days removed from his first round knockout of previously undefeated Slovenian prospect Bojan Kosednar, we've learned Daley's punishment for biting the hand that feeds: a spot on EliteXC's September 20th "Return to Showtime" event and, should he emerge victorious, a guaranteed shot at newly-crowned EliteXC Welterweight Champion Jake Shields:

“Right now I’m training my ass off. I’m always a slow starter in training camp, but I'm in my rhythm now,” informed Daley. “I leave for Holland this weekend for two weeks of training camp out there with Mike's Gym and Melvin Manhoef before going to the U.S.A. and training with my secret weapon.”

“I beat this guy (on Sept. 20), I will no doubt be fighting for the EliteXC title next!” stated and emphatic Daley.

In the same interview with MMAWeekly, "Semtex" says he can't name his opponent for September 20th as of yet, but that it's "most likely against an undefeated ex-IFL fighter." (No unbeaten IFL welterweights spring to mind...) Also, while the man clearly doesn't need a whole lot of work on his striking, it's scary to think what kind of Thai boxing skills Manhoef could instill in him. Any guesses on his "secret weapon" in America? Considering Daley's weaknesses, my money's on him putting in some time with ATT or Xtreme Couture.

This is excellent news and a very needed addition to EXC's bleak welterweight division. Daley could provide an excellent challenge to Jake Shields down the road.

I hadn't heard much about Daley before his fight with Morgan on ShoXC, but since then I've tried to catch as many of his old fights as possible. Think he'll give Shields a good fight if it happens.

Ok, now for a stupid question, what does "Semtex" mean?

Semtex is a type of plastic explosive.

Yeah, they've been running out of opponents for Jake for a while now. The Fickett fight never materialized (several times and for different reasons)...probably wouldn't have presented too much of a challenge but at least Fickett has strong subs.

Looks like Paul's opponent will be Lyman Good....never heard of him, is he any good (pardon the pun!)?

The proposed opponent for his debut is UK Muay Thai specialist Paul “Semtex” Daley. While EliteXC has yet to announce the bout officially, Daley gave strong hints that Good would be his opponent during a recent interview with MMAWeekly.com.

Good, a full-time instructor at several of Tiger Schulmann’s local mixed martial arts academies across the East Coast region, began his professional MMA career competing for Lou Neglia’s Ring of Combat promotion in Atlantic City, N.J.

He earned his first notable victory against Eric Charles during ROC 14 on April 27, 2007. Charles, who was one of 32 fighters invited to Las Vegas to fight for a final spot during the seventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” lost via TKO as a result of a doctor’s stoppage at 4:00 of round 1.

Following the Charles fight, Good defeated Doug Gordon via unanimous decision during a Cage Fury Fighting Championship event on June 23, 2007. He then made his debut for a major national promotion taking on Mike Dolce on the undercard of the IFL’s team semifinals last August. Good defeated Dolce, an official cast member of TUF 7, via unanimous decision.

Good’s most recent fight was unanimous decision victory over Alexis Aquino at ROC 18 this past March. He had been scheduled to defend his Ring of Combat welterweight title against John Howard in the main event of ROC 21 on Sept. 12 but Team Tiger Schulmann officials have informed us that he’s been pulled off the card.

A noted striker, Good is also a veteran of Chuck Norris’ World Combat League.

I've seen a few of his fights...not bad and can take some shots. But not quite the finisher you'd want from a striker...Semtex should win...isn't that plan anyway?
